Treatment of Axillary hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Axillary hyperhidrosis characterized by excessive sweating in the axillary regions is a frustrating chronic autonomic disorder leading to social embarrassment, impaired quality of life and usually associated with palmoplantar hyperhidrosis. Identifying the condition and its cause is central to the management. AIM: The aim of this article is to discuss treatment options for axillary hyperhidrosis. METHODS: Comprehensive literature search using PubMed and Google Scholar was performed to review relevant published articles related to diagnosis and treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis.…

Paediatric haematohidrosis: an overview of a rare but clinically distinct condition.

Haematohidrosis is a rare and dramatic condition in which bleeding occurs spontaneously from intact skin. We report the case of a nine-year-old boy with a typical clinical presentation. The case highlights how challenging it can be for medical professionals to recognise and evaluate rare conditions. A review of the literature was performed, showing that haematohidrosis is mainly a paediatric condition. Our case together with findings from the review indicates that treatment with Beta blockers may be effective for treatment of haematohidrosis in children. Conclusion: Paediatric haematohidrosis

Multiple Eccrine Spiradenomas in a Zosteriform Distribution.

A 52-year-old man was referred to our department with a 28-year history of painful nodular lesions located on his left buttock and left inguinal region that had recently increased in size and number. The lesions had developed progressively over many years. Cutaneous examination revealed multiple, well-circumscribed, subcutaneous, blue-gray nodules in a zosteriform distribution across the left inguinal region and the left buttock. Some of the painful nodules were large and ulcerated (Figure 1). Computed tomography showed multiple cutaneous nodules but no bone metastases or subcutaneous invasion

Benign nodular hidradenoma of the face.

A very rare case of nodular hidradenoma with an atypical clinical presentation of the face of a 70-year-old woman is presented. Although this rare benign tumor has the potential of local recurrence and malignant transformation, it is commonly reported in the dermatology, pathology, and oncology literature, with limited clinical information. The purpose of this report was to emphasize the clinical features of this lesion for plastic surgeons.

Pink Eccrine Chromhidrosis Induced by Excessive Consumption of an Energy Drink.

Eccrine chromhidrosis is a rare condition characterised by the abnormal colouration of eccrine sweat, which may be triggered by endogenous or exogenous factors. We report the case of a 19-year-old male who was referred to us for persistent pink sweating for three months. Clinical examination and further investigations did not provide a clear diagnosis or arguments in favour of pseudochromhidrosis or apocrine chromhidrosis. Investigation of eating habits revealed an excessive consumption of a pink energy drink. The sweat normalised when consumption ceased, and chromhidrosis relapsed after the r…

Skin Adnexal Tumors in Plain Language: A Practical Approach for the General Surgical Pathologist.

CONTEXT.—: Skin adnexal tumors, those neoplasms deriving from hair follicles and sweat glands, are often a source of confusion amongst even experienced pathologists. Many well-described entities have overlapping features, tumors are often only partially sampled, and many cases do not fit neatly into well-established classification schemes. OBJECTIVES.—: To simplify categorization of adnexal tumors for the general surgical pathologist and to shed light on many of the diagnostic dilemmas commonly encountered in daily practice. The following review breaks adnexal neoplasms into 3 groups: sebaceo…

SINUSITIS, BRONCHIECTASIS, AND FLATUS IN A SUMATRAN ORANGUTAN (PONGO ABELII): COULD THIS BE CYSTIC FIBROSIS?

A 31-yr-old male Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) presented with 14 yr of chronic purulent nasal drainage and cough with intermittent exacerbation of symptoms requiring systemic antibiotic treatment. He was diagnosed with a cystic fibrosis (CF)-like condition. Evaluation consisted of bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage, culture, and computed tomography scanning of the sinuses and chest. Although the presence of low fecal elastase activity increased the suspicion for a diagnosis of CF, pilocarpine iontophoresis with sweat collection and analysis ("sweat testing") was inconclusive. Medical…

Pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1 and respiratory distress syndrome.

We present a patient born at 31 weeks gestation with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) which did not respond to surfactant. He also developed hyponatremia, hyperkalemia and dehydration with increased sweat electrolytes despite high levels of serum aldosterone, thus systemic pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1 (PHA-1) diagnosis was made. Systemic PHA-1 is caused by mutations of amiloride-sensitive epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) genes. Because ENaC is a rate-limiting step for sodium absorption by epithelial cells, not only of the renal tubule but also of the lung epithelium, patients with PHA-1 w…

The Str mouse as a model for incontinentia pigmenti.

Striated mouse has been proposed as a model for incontinentia pigmenti (IP) based on the similarities in genetic predisposition and syntenic gene localisation in mouse. IP is considered an ectodermal dysplasia with all four characteristic structures involved: sweat glands, hair, teeth and nails. Recently mutations have been found in the Nsdhl, encoding an NAD(P)H steroid dehydrogenase-like protein in Str and Bpa mice. We analysed the phenotype of the Str mouse to evaluate the involvement of ectodermally derived tissues. Our results demonstrated that in Str mouse in addition to abnormal coat te…

Improvement in Lung Clearance Index and Chest Computed Tomography Scores with Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor Treatment in People with Cystic Fibrosis Aged 12 Years and Older - The RECOVER Trial.

Rationale: Clinical trials have shown that use of elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) is associated with improvements in sweat chloride, pulmonary function, nutrition, and quality of life in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Little is known about the impact of ETI on ventilation inhomogeneity and lung structure. Objectives: RECOVER is a real-world study designed to measure the impact of ETI in people with CF. The primary endpoints were lung clearance (lung clearance index; LCI2.5) and FEV1. Secondary endpoints included spirometry-controlled chest computed tomography (CT) scores. Methods: Th…

Pharmacophysiology of atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis is clearly characterized by altered cutaneous physiologic responses. There is a tendency to acral vasoconstriction. Rubbin … the scratching causes the damage and the severe dermatitis. Thermal as well as emotional stimuli to sweating cause severe itching in AD, yet the concept of a miliaria-type, poral occlusion mechanism remains unproven. Some studies suggest actually increased sweating along with erythema and pruritus during acute flares of AD. The concept of sweat-borne al …

Single molecularly imprinted polymer platform integrating 23 in situ regeneration and antifouling for electrochemical cortisol detection in complex matrices.

The reusability of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based biosensors is severely limited by inefficient template removal suppressing in situ regeneration and surface fouling in complex matrices. While recent work demonstrated the feasibility of in situ electrostatic regeneration for MIPs, no study has yet integrated antifouling capability with regeneration ability in a single MIP platform. Here, we reported the first integration of antifouling and ultrahigh in situ regeneration capabilities in a single MIP biosensor for electrochemical cortisol detection in complex biological sweat and real…

Case Study: Analyzing CFTR Mutations and SNPs in Pulmonary Fibrosis Patients with Unclear Symptoms.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic monogenic disorder inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, marked by persistent airway infections in t … Diagnosis of CF usually relies on characteristic symptoms, a family history of CF, and an abnormal sweat chloride test, but in children, low sweat production during testing leads to false negative results. In this case report, a suspected patient with ambiguous respiratory symptoms underwent a comprehensive investigation revealing elevated CRP levels, …

Tracing Acid-Base Variables in Exercising Horses: Effects of Pre-Loading Oral Electrolytes.

Oral electrolyte supplementation may influence acid-base state during exercise due to the intestinal absorption of administered water and electrolytes used to mitigating sweat losses. This study examined the effect of pre-exercise electrolyte supplementation (3 and 8 L) on plasma acid-base variables at rest, during moderate intensity exercise and during recovery. It was hypothesized that electrolyte supplementation will result in improved acid-base state compared to the alkalosis typical of prolonged exercise. In randomized crossover fashion, four horses were administered 3 L or 8 L of a hypot…
