This review paper focuses attention on tissue changes which may take place in dentin and on localized alterations in tissue formation in the predentin area. A number of reaction patterns has been described in dentin affecting both the inorganic and organic components. Dentinal tubules may become partly or completely obturated by growth of the peritubular dentin. Precipitation of mineral salts within the tubules, which may be a reprecipitation of minerals from adjacent demineralized dentin, represents a fundamentally different mode of obturation of dentinal tubules. Initially, demineralization

The aim of this study was to investigate pre-injury factors, causes of dental injuries and healing complications after traumatic injuries to permanent teeth. The analysed sample comprised 889 permanent teeth of 384 patients, who were treated in the Dentistry Department in Faculty Hospital in Pilsen. Enamel-dentin fractures [233 teeth (26.2%)] and lateral luxations [207 teeth (23.3%)] were the most frequent injuries. The age of the patients at the time of injury varied between 7 and 65 years. Predominantly, children were affected [587 injured teeth (66.0%)]. The most frequent causes of injuries

This study evaluates the performance of a curvature-based 3D dental comparison method - the keypoint pipeline - for forensic identification, assessing the effects of standardised blunt force trauma on human dentitions. The dental arches in ten human jaw specimens (five maxillae, five mandibulae) were scanned using two intraoral 3D scanners before and after exposure to controlled blunt trauma delivered via a drop tower mechanism applying approximately 3154 Newton of force. Trauma outcomes were documented through high-speed video, digital photography, and 3D scanning. Post-trauma scans were proc

Although rare, sport-related injuries to the head and neck can be life threatening; therefore, timely and appropriate treatment is critical. Preparation is key for the sideline physician and begins well before arriving on the sideline. Knowing the athletic trainer and support staff, establishing a chain of command and emergency action plan, and having all the appropriate equipment readily available are important for game or practice preparedness. At the athletic event, physicians should have a clear line of sight to the field of play and easy access to reach the field when necessary. When perf

INTRODUCTION: A root canal obturated with a calcium silicate-based sealer (bioceramic sealer [BCS]) and a modified gutta-percha cone (bioceramic cone [BCC]) might improve the fracture resistance of the root. The objective of this study was to evaluate root reinforcement of a bioceramic cone/sealer (TotalFill; FKG Dentaire SA, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) by investigating the fracture resistance, push-out bond strength, sealer penetration, and modulus of elasticity (MOE) in comparison with gutta-percha/AH Plus (Dentsply Maillefer, Tulsa, OK) (GP/AH).

This article reviews the infrequently utilized treatment method of forced eruption and how it can serve as an alternative to the sacrifice of the natural root system. Forced eruption can preserve the natural root system and related periodontal architecture, resulting in years of additional service for the patient. It also can maintain adjacent tooth structure while retaining the option for future implant reconstruction. Given the reported success of forced eruption, the technique requires greater attention and increased application among dentists. A case of forced eruption in the anterior maxi

Coronectomy was developed to reduce the incidence of iatrogenic injury to the inferior dental nerve, which can be a result of routine mandibular third molar surgery, but it is not widely accepted despite early studies that all showed positive results. This two-part paper looks at the technique in more detail to help clinicians gain a better understanding of the procedure. The first part dealt in detail with technical aspects. This one will consider the management of common complications.

This study evaluated the impact of long-term storage conditions (medium and time) on the development of experimental dentinal microcracks through micro-computed tomography. Sixty freshly extracted premolars were stored in formalin, water, or dry conditions (n = 20) and scanned after 72 h, 30 days, 6 months and 3 years of extraction. The effect of the storage medium and time on the occurrence of dentinal defects was statistically evaluated. A total of 211 000 images were screened revealing the existence of 11 519 slices with dentinal defects. Dry conditions significantly contributed to the deve

Patellar fracture and dental anomaly syndrome (PADS) is a congenital bone disease of cats that is characterized by atraumatic bone fractures (most commonly the patella), the persistence of deciduous teeth, and impaction of permanent teeth. Jaw swelling due to osteomyelitis is often the reason that cats with PADS are presented for veterinary dental care. The clinical history, oral examination findings, dental radiological findings, and histopathology were evaluated for 13 cats with dental and skeletal pathology consistent with PADS, including 9 with osteomyelitis. Cats in this study were predom

A foreign body retained in the skin can originate from numerous sources and most of the time these foreign bodies are removed without any sequelae. The present article reports a case of persistent swelling in the lower lip misdiagnosed as keloid, which later turned out to be an embedded tooth fragment identified post spontaneous extrusion after 11 months.

Both hard and soft tissue undergo change after tooth extraction. In particular, the bone tissue surrounding teeth with fenestration or dehiscence defects undergoes dramatic change following tooth extraction, which can compromise further rehabilitation of the area. Adequate alveolar bone volume and keratinized mucosa are critical to the success of implant therapy. Therefore, the anatomic dimension of the alveolar ridge must be adequate to achieve an esthetically acceptable outcome of implant therapy. Previous studies have proposed many clinical techniques for preserving the extraction socket. T
