OBJECTIVE: To determine clinical profile of osteoarticular tuberculosis (TB) in children.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis from 2007 to 2013. All patients diagnosed with bone TB, spinal TB or TB abscesses were included.
RESULTS: Out of 1318 children with TB, 39 (2.96%) had osteoarticular TB, of which 16 (42%) had osteomyelitis, 8 (20.5%) had spinal involvement, 7 (17.9%) had TB synovitis, 2 (5.1%) had psoas abscess and 6 (15.4%) had abscesses. The mean age of presentation was 7.1 ± 3.5 years (range 2-14 years). Of the 33 cases in which a culture was done, 25 (64%) showed a positive culture.

Increasing numbers of active tuberculosis in Germany were recorded in the last years. Thus, also extrapulmonary manifestations of tuberculosis gain clinical significance as differential diagnoses, especially when a metastatic tumor disease is suspected. We report the case of a 77-year-old male patient who presented with unilateral leg pain and B symptoms. Further investigations revealed an osteolytic mass in the sacrum as well as CT-morphological findings consistent with metastatic gastric cancer. However, transgastric biopsies showed necrotising granuloma with giant cells leading to molecular

INTRODUCTION: The leading cause of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis is Staphylococcus aureus, and its incidence is rising, particularly in the elderly. We report an unusual case of cervical spondylodiscitis and epidural abscess mimicking Pott's disease.
CASE REPORT: A 67-year-old man was admitted to our institution with a 15-day history of neck pain radiating to the head, shoulders and left arm that was associated with weakness and paresthesia. Laboratory tests showed a mild leucocytosis and high levels of inflammatory markers. The MRI showed contrast enhancement of C6-C7 with an abscess infi

The radiological features of osteoarticular tuberculosis are quite variable. The rareness of AIDS-associated tuberculosis and relatively mild course and imaging features may be the common feature of osteoarticular tuberculosis in Japan. Imaging features are generally similar to other low-grade infections, and liberal (often incomplete) use of antibiotics for the treatment of pyogenic infection may also make the differential diagnosis difficult on many occasions.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
OBJECTIVE: To describe and discuss the case of a patient, later recognized to have sickle cell trait (SCT), who suffered from tuberculous spondylodiscitis and developed a spinal ischemia after spinal decompression and stabilization and to discuss the literature on this.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spinal ischemia is a rare event and even more unusual after spinal surgery. Vaso-occlusive complications like strokes occur in patients with sickle cell disease, but spinal ischemia has rarely been reported. SCT is generally seen as a benign disorder with vaso-occlusive c

Infection with the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans is seen predominantly in two forms: (a) pulmonary and (b) cerebromeningeal. Skeletal cryptococcosis is uncommon. There have been only occasional case reports of thoracic vertebral cryptococcosis presenting as cord compression. A young female had cervical lymphadenopathy diagnosed as tuberculosis by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and was on antitubercular therapy (ATT) for 5 months. She developed rapidly progressive paraparesis and imaging demonstrated a destructive vertebral body lesion involving T2-3 with a paraspinal abscess producing

The paper summarizes surveys of over 2500 patients with tuberculous spondylitis complicated by neurological disorders of the spinal cord. The authors identified 5 grades of these disorders: from reflex disorders to limb plegia and pelvic dysfunctions. The classification proposed made it possible to clearly systematize spinal cord disorders in patients with tuberculous spondylitis, to establish a topical diagnosis and the severity of spinal cord lesions, to choose surgical accesses and method for stabilizing the spine, and to make a research processing of clinical and neurological data.

BACKGROUND: Gardnerella vaginalis, which is mainly distributed in the female genitourinary tract, is the main agent causing bacterial vaginosis, as well as a relatively uncommon cause of extragenital infection, and a rare source of joint or spinal infections.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 51-year-old female patient with no underlying disease who presented with intermittent low back pain, evident after both being sedentary and prolonged activity. The patient was diagnosed with a pyogenic spinal infection at another hospital and treated with analgesic and cephalosporin anti-infective therapies

Three hundred seventy cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis were reported to the Oklahoma State Department of Health between January 1, 1965 and December 31, 1973. The annual number of cases reported showed no tendency to decrease with time. A greater proportion of cases reported in recent years had bacteriologic confirmation. When compared to the distribution of all newly diagnosed cases of tuberculosis in the population, a greater proportion of newly diagnosed cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis occurred in nonwhites. This was especially true to tuberculous meningitis, tuberculous lymphadeni

BACKGROUND: In Japan, since the introduction of antituberculosis chemotherapy, the typical choroidal tuberculoma has been considered uncommon. A patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), because of the suppression of cell mediated immunity, faces the risk of tuberculous infection.
CASE: A 30-year-old Malayan man had continuous cough for six months. He was diagnosed as having miliary tuberculosis of the lung and spine. Because the serum test of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was positive, he was also diagnosed as having AIDS.
FINDINGS: Fundus examination showed a yellow whit

BACKGROUND: Anterior debridement, decompression, bone grafting, and instrumentation are safe and effective techniques for patients with lower cervical spine tuberculosis. However, there is no consensus regarding the methods for using autogenous bone grafts. The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the clinical outcomes of anterior surgical management for cervical spine tuberculosis by using an iliac bone graft versus a structural manubrium graft.
METHODS: From January 2009 to September 2018, 23 patients with cervical spine tuberculosis were treated with anterior debridement, aut

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to evaluate disease courses and outcomes of sJIA children undergoing tocilizumab (TCZ) treatment, and to establish the predictors which distinguish inactive disease and disease flares.
METHODS: Our retrospective study included 48 active sJIA children who were refractory to different anti-rheumatic drugs and who were then started on TCZ. The effectiveness of TCZ was assessed by the changes of sJIA attributed signs and symptoms and the remission was judged according to the Wallace (2004) criteria.
RESULTS: The main demographic parameters (Me; IQR) were show

The operative treatment of tuberculous spondylitis remains a challenge with regard to the surgical approach to the cervicothoracic junction. In addition, it is difficult to restore the resected vertebral bodies. Two cases of tuberculous spondylitis in this area are presented. The first case concerns a 25-year-old African patient suffering from the effects of tuberculous spondylitis: Destruction of vertebral bodies dorsal (D)1, D2, and D3, kyphosis coupled with compression of the spinal cord, as well as incomplete motor and sensory paraplegia (Frankel grade C). The operative treatment of tuberc

Recipients of solid-organ transplants are, due to immunosuppressive treatment, disposed to opportunistic infections including tuberculosis. We report a rare case of acute intramedullary tuberculous abscess in a Danish male recipient of a liver transplant. The problems in diagnostics, medical and surgical treatment are discussed.
