An intranet-based system for quality assurance in surgery.

Quality assurance in surgery relies on precise medical records about surgical procedures and outcomes. Data quality is crucial for statistical evaluation; missing values cannot be avoided but must be minimized. The quality assurance system must be accessible from many locations within the clinic; given the complex and heterogeneous computing infrastructure this is a technological challenge. Intranet-technology--the application of internet-tools in local networks--can help to solve the technical problems. We designed, implemented and evaluated a generic Intranet-based quality assurance system i

MR diagnosis of vein of Galen aneurysmal malformations using virtual cisternoscopy.

Vein of Galen aneurysmal malformations (VGAMs) are rarely seen intracranial congenital vascular malformations with extremely complex vascular architectures. We present two newborns with an unclear intracranial mass being discovered in routine intrauterine ultrasonography. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) identified these lesions as VGAMs. Besides conventional MRA analysis, "virtual cisternoscopy"-a special kind of virtual endoscopy combining perspective volume rendering and motion-was applied to assess the intracranial vasculature. One newborn was treat

Automatic Feature Selection for Sensorimotor Rhythms Brain-Computer Interface Fusing Expert and Data-Driven Knowledge.

Early brain-computer interface (BCI) systems were mainly based on prior neurophysiological knowledge coupled with feedback training, while state-of-the-art interfaces rely on data-driven, machine learning (ML)-oriented methods. Despite the advances in BCI that ML can be credited with, the performance of BCI solutions is still not up to the mark, posing a major barrier to the widespread use of this technology. This paper proposes a novel, automatic feature selection method for BCI able to leverage both data-dependent and expert knowledge to suppress noisy features and highlight the most relevan

Attention-Adaptive BCI-AOT System Enhances Motor Recovery and Neural Engagement After Stroke.

Stroke frequently results in long-term motor deficits that impair quality of life. Action observation therapy (AOT) has shown promise for motor recovery through engagement of the mirror neuron system (MNS), yet its passive nature and lack of attentional tracking limit its neuroplasticity efficacy. To address these limitations, we developed a closed-loop Brain-Computer Interface-integrated AOT (BCI-AOT) system employing real-time Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP)-based attention monitoring to dynamically control therapy delivery. In a within-subject crossover study, 22 individuals wi

Operative Anatomy of the Skull Base: 3D Exploration with a Highly Detailed Interactive Atlas.

Objective  We evaluated the usefulness of a three-dimensional (3D) interactive atlas to illustrate and teach surgical skull base anatomy in a clinical setting. Study Design  A highly detailed atlas of the adult human skull base was created from multiple high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans of a healthy Caucasian male. It includes the parcellated and labeled bony skull base, intra- and extracranial vasculature, cranial nerves, cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. We are reporting retrospectively on our experiences with employing the atlas for the s

The Potential for a Speech Brain-Computer Interface Using Chronic Electrocorticography.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a technology that uses neural features to restore or augment the capabilities of its user. A BCI for speech would enable communication in real time via neural correlates of attempted or imagined speech. Such a technology would potentially restore communication and improve quality of life for locked-in patients and other patients with severe communication disorders. There have been many recent developments in neural decoders, neural feature extraction, and brain recording modalities facilitating BCI for the control of prosthetics and in automatic speech recog

MMonitor for real-time monitoring of microbial communities using long reads.

Real-time monitoring of microbial communities offers valuable insights into microbial dynamics across diverse environments. However, many existing metagenome analysis tools require advanced computational expertise and are not designed for monitoring. We present MMonitor, an open-source software platform for real-time analysis and visualization of metagenomic Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing data. MMonitor includes two components: a desktop application for running bioinformatics pipelines through a graphical user interface (GUI) or command-line interface (CLI) and a web-based dashb

A(C)VPpred: Transfer Learning-Enhanced Prediction of Antiviral and Anticoronavirus Peptides from Sequence Data.

Viral infections pose an ongoing public health challenge and create a need for innovative therapies. Antiviral peptides (AVPs) offer a promising solution due to their high specificity, low toxicity, and reduced risk of inducing drug resistance. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the need for targeted anticoronavirus peptides (ACVPs). We introduce the term A(C)VPs (where "(C)" indicates the optional coronavirus specificity) to encompass both broad-spectrum AVPs and ACVPs. However, experimental screening of effective A(C)VPs remains slow and costly. To overcome these limitations, we propose A(

Implementation of a model of bodily fluids regulation.

The classic model of blood pressure regulation by Guyton et al. (Annu Rev Physiol 34:13-46, 1972a; Ann Biomed Eng 1:254-281, 1972b) set a new standard for quantitative exploration of physiological function and led to important new insights, some of which still remain the focus of debate, such as whether the kidney plays the primary role in the genesis of hypertension (Montani et al. in Exp Physiol 24:41-54, 2009a; Exp Physiol 94:382-388, 2009b; Osborn et al. in Exp Physiol 94:389-396, 2009a; Exp Physiol 94:388-389, 2009b). Key to the success of this model was the fact that the authors made the

medplot: a web application for dynamic summary and analysis of longitudinal medical data based on R.

In biomedical studies the patients are often evaluated numerous times and a large number of variables are recorded at each time-point. Data entry and manipulation of longitudinal data can be performed using spreadsheet programs, which usually include some data plotting and analysis capabilities and are straightforward to use, but are not designed for the analyses of complex longitudinal data. Specialized statistical software offers more flexibility and capabilities, but first time users with biomedical background often find its use difficult. We developed medplot, an interactive web applicatio

CoNVaQ: a web tool for copy number variation-based association studies.

BACKGROUND: Copy number variations (CNVs) are large segments of the genome that are duplicated or deleted. Structural variations in the genome have been linked to many complex diseases. Similar to how genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have helped discover single-nucleotide polymorphisms linked to disease phenotypes, the extension of GWAS to CNVs has aided the discovery of structural variants associated with human traits and diseases. RESULTS: We present CoNVaQ, an easy-to-use web-based tool for CNV-based association studies. The web service allows users to upload two sets of CNV segments

Restoration of bilateral motor coordination from preserved agonist-antagonist coupling in amputation musculature.

BACKGROUND: Neuroprosthetic devices controlled by persons with standard limb amputation often lack the dexterity of the physiological limb due to limitations of both the user's ability to output accurate control signals and the control system's ability to formulate dynamic trajectories from those signals. To restore full limb functionality to persons with amputation, it is necessary to first deduce and quantify the motor performance of the missing limbs, then meet these performance requirements through direct, volitional control of neuroprosthetic devices. METHODS: We develop a neuromuscular

Application of Multispectral Imaging in the Human Tympanic Membrane.

Multispectral imaging has recently shown good performance in determining information about physiology, morphology, and composition of tissue. In the endoscopy field, many researches have shown the ability to apply multispectral or narrow-band images in surveying vascular structure based on the interaction of light wavelength with tissue composition. However, there has been no mention to assess the contrast between other components in the middle ear such as the tympanic membrane, malleus, and the surrounding area. Using CT, OCT, or ODT can clearly describe the tympanic membrane structure; never

Two-Year Follow-up of Multidisciplinary Treatment Using Digital Smile Design as a Planning Tool for Esthetic Restorations on Maxillary Midline Diastema.

One of the challenges posed by diastema closure treatment in the presence of tooth size discrepancy is to achieve adequate distribution of the spaces between the teeth. The use of the Digital Smile Design can assist the clinician in visualizing and measuring dentogingival discrepancies with maximum predictability. The present clinical case describes an approach to space distribution with assistance of the digital tool, allowing adequate restorative procedures. The protocol used was shown to be efficient, achieving the esthetics desired by the patient both during and after multidisciplinary tre

The Importance of Haptics in Generating Exoskeleton Gait Trajectory Using Alternate Motor Inputs.

Human gait requires both haptic and visual feedback to generate and control rhythmic movements, and navigate environmental obstacles. Current lower extremity wearable exoskeletons that restore gait to individuals with paraplegia due to spinal cord injury rely completely on visual feedback to generate limited pre-programmed gait variations, and generally provide little control by the user over the gait cycle. As an alternative to this limitation, we propose user control of gait in real time using healthy upper extremities. This paper evaluates the feedback conditions required for the hands to g

Core body temperature control by total liquid ventilation using a virtual lung temperature sensor.

In total liquid ventilation (TLV), the lungs are filled with a breathable liquid perfluorocarbon (PFC) while a liquid ventilator ensures proper gas exchange by renewal of a tidal volume of oxygenated and temperature-controlled PFC. Given the rapid changes in core body temperature generated by TLV using the lung has a heat exchanger, it is crucial to have accurate and reliable core body temperature monitoring and control. This study presents the design of a virtual lung temperature sensor to control core temperature. In the first step, the virtual sensor, using expired PFC to estimate lung temp

An interactive teaching device simulating intussusception reduction.

Intussusception is relatively uncommon, occurring in 0.5 to 2.3 cases per 1,000 live births in the USA. Radiology residents, therefore, have few opportunities to participate in intussusception reduction during training, and practicing radiologists encounter it infrequently. Training is essential, as successful reduction avoids surgery. The judgment involved in reducing an intussusception is best gained with experience. We developed a training device that simulates fluoroscopic intussusception reduction with air. The device consists of a doll that contains a cylinder with similar stress and str
