Reversible myocardial dysfunction in a dog after resuscitation from cardiopulmonary arrest.

A 4-year-old Dachshund was referred for management of a mandibular fracture. The dog underwent cardiopulmonary arrest after sedation for skull radiography. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was started immediately, and return of spontaneous circulation was rapidly obtained. However, after resuscitation, the dog was hemodynamically unstable. Additionally, global left ventricular systolic dysfunction and a focal hyperechoic myocardial lesion were found echocardiographically, and serum cardiac troponin I was severely elevated (82.80 ng/mL, upper hospital limit <0.7 ng/mL). The dog remained hospitaliz

Association of electrocardiographically determined left ventricular mass with incident diabetes, 1985-1986 to 2010-2011: Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

OBJECTIVE: Electrocardiographic indices reflecting left ventricular hypertrophy are associated with incident diabetes in clinical populations at risk for coronary heart disease. We tested whether electrocardiographically determined left ventricular mass was positively associated with incident diabetes in a population sample. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study participants (n = 4,739) were followed from 1985-1986 to 2010-2011 for incident diabetes. Validated sex- and race-specific formulas were applied to standard electrocardiograms to

Tissue Doppler imaging in Fabry disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The development of effective enzyme replacement/enhancement therapy makes of clinical relevance considering Fabry disease in the differential diagnosis of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In particular the opportunity to significantly modify the clinical progression of the disease has reinforced the need for early diagnosis of Fabry cardiomyopathy. RECENT FINDINGS: The study with tissue Doppler of Fabry patients with endomyocardial biopsy-proven cardiac involvement showed a reduction of both diastolic and systolic myocardial velocities recorded at septal and later

Association of aortic stiffness early post myocardial infarction with left ventricular remodelling.

BACKGROUND: Adverse left ventricular (LV) remodelling after myocardial infarction is associated with heart failure. We investigated whether aortic stiffness during acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction is associated with LV remodelling at long-term follow-up. METHODS: In 109 patients within 48 h of myocardial infarction post-primary percutaneous coronary intervention and after 2 years, we measured: (a) carotid to femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV), (b) LV global longitudinal strain (GLS) and left atrial strain using speckle-tracking echocardiography, (c) PWV/GLS ratio as a surrogate

Cardiomyopathy induced by premature ventricular contractions with ventricular escape beats in the compensatory pause: A case report and brief review of the literature.

RATIONALE: We reported a case with cardiomyopathy induced by frequent premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) and followed ventricular escape beats (VEBs). PVCs with VEBs in the compensatory pause which induced cardiomyopathy is rarely reported. Also, the case exhibited many characteristics of PVCs which were more likely to induce cardiomyopathy, like the location of origin, the longer coupling interval, and the QRS wave companied with the P wave. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old man with left ventricular (LV) dysfunction presented with palpation, chest distress, and dyspnea for 3 years. Hol

To determine the correlation between echocardiographic diastolic parameters and invasively measured left ventricular end diastolic pressure in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction- an observational, descriptive study. (CEAL-HFpEF study).

OBJECTIVES: Though invasive monitoring is the most accurate to estimate diastolic dysfunction but it has its own risk. The purpose of this study was to find out any standardized correlation between invasive and non -invasive parameters. METHODS: It is an observational, descriptive study comprising of a total of 500 patients. The primary objective of the study was to determine the correlation between echocardiographic diastolic parameters and invasively measured left ventricular end diastolic pressure (LVEDP). RESULTS: On studying correlation of different invasive and non-invasive data it was

Association of premature ventricular complex burden with elevated left ventricular filling pressure.

BACKGROUND: Premature ventricular contraction (PVC) is considered one of the most common arrhythmias in clinical practice. The aetiology of PVC is still unclear, however increased sympathetic activity, electrolyte misbalance and cardiomyopathies are considered the main causes of PVCs. In this study we were trying to find out whether there was any association between PVC burden and elevated left ventricular (LV) filling pressure. METHODS: A total of 100 patients (age: 58.6 ± 7.5 years, 52 males) with frequent PVCs observed on 24-hour Holter monitoring (> 1%) and normal LV ejection fraction (LV

Applying machine learning to detect early stages of cardiac remodelling and dysfunction.

AIMS: Both left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) and hypertrophy (LVH) as assessed by echocardiography are independent prognostic markers of future cardiovascular events in the community. However, selective screening strategies to identify individuals at risk who would benefit most from cardiac phenotyping are lacking. We, therefore, assessed the utility of several machine learning (ML) classifiers built on routinely measured clinical, biochemical, and electrocardiographic features for detecting subclinical LV abnormalities. METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 1407 participants (mea

Echocardiographic Manifestations in COVID-19: A Review.

COVID-19 has rapidly spread around the world and threatened global health. Although this disease mainly affects the respiratory system, there is increasing evidence that SARS-CoV-2 also has effects on the cardiovascular system. Echocardiography is a valuable tool in the assessment of cardiovascular disease. It is cost-effective, widely available and provides information that can influence management. Given the risk of personnel infection and equipment contamination during echocardiography, leading world societies have recommended performing echocardiography only when a clinical benefit is like

Atrioventricular coupling and left atrial abnormality in type 2 diabetes mellitus with functional mitral regurgitation patients verified by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients induced by left ventricular (LV) enlargement and mitral valve abnormality may aggravated the impairment in left atrial (LA) compliance. Thus, this study aimed to depict how FMR and LV dysfunction affect LA compliance in T2DM patients with FMR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 148 patients with T2DM and 49 age- and sex-matched normal controls underwent cardiac magnetic resonance examination. LA longitudinal strain and LA and LV functional indices were compared among controls and different T2DM patien

Pulmonary stenosis and severe biventricular dysfunction: improvement following percutaneous valvuloplasty.

A 15-year-old boy with severe pulmonary stenosis associated with severe right and left ventricular systolic dysfunction is reported. After successful percutaneous pulmonary valvuloplasty, there was an initial and early improvement in right ventricular (RV) function, followed by a delayed and more gradual improvement in left ventricular (LV) function. At long-term follow up, both RV and LV systolic functions were nearly normalized. Several mechanisms may be implicated, including ventricular interdependence, geometric factors, altered compliance and intrinsic alteration in the LV muscle. A delay

Impact of Left Ventricular Diastolic Function on Right Ventricular Size and Function.

BACKGROUND: Diastolic dysfunction (DD) of the left ventricle is common. When severe it can result in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). While right ventricular (RV) dilation and dysfunction are known to occur in HFpEF, the effects of lesser degrees of DD on RV size and function have not been explored. METHODS: A broad sample of 370 patients (age 60 ± 15 years, 66% female) undergoing clinically indicated echocardiography had three-dimensional imaging of the right ventricle. A semiautomated program was used to measure RV volumes, ejection fraction, linear dimensions, and lo

Right ventricular function in the donor heart.

OBJECTIVES: Early morbidity and mortality post cardiac transplantation is frequently caused by right ventricular failure; this is usually attributed to an elevated pulmonary vascular resistance in the recipient. Brain death in the donor is recognised as causing left ventricular dysfunction, but its effects on the right ventricle have not previously been studied. The aim of this study was to investigate right ventricular function following brain death, using a canine model. METHODS: The hearts of 33 dogs were instrumented with micromanometers, flow probes and dimension transducers to measure m

Left Atrial Reservoir Strain-Based Left Ventricular Diastolic Function Grading and Incident Heart Failure in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: The echocardiographic assessment of left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is complex and not well-established. We investigated whether the left atrial reservoir strain (LARS) could be used to categorize LVDD and whether this grading is predictive of heart failure (HF) events in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. METHODS: A total of 414 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (aged 58.3±12.8 years; 65.7% male) were categorized using LARS-defined LVDD (LARS-DD) grades: ≥35% (grade 0), ≥24% to <35%, ≥19% to <24%, and <19% (grade 3
