Characterization of diplopia in non-demented patients with Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Although diplopia is considered a frequent symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), little is known about its clinical manifestation, associated mechanisms and treatment. Here we characterized binocular diplopia in non-demented PD patients in an interdisciplinary setting. METHODS: PD patients were prospectively screened for diplopia, visual hallucinations, problems with spatial perception, contrast sensitivity, presence of blurred vision, and history of ophthalmological comorbidities via interview. Two groups of PD patients, one with and one without diplopia, underwent clinical and

Abnormal tuning of saccade-related cells in pontine reticular formation of strabismic monkeys.

Strabismus is a common disorder, characterized by a chronic misalignment of the eyes and numerous visual and oculomotor abnormalities. For example, saccades are often highly disconjugate. For humans with pattern strabismus, the horizontal and vertical disconjugacies vary with eye position. In monkeys, manipulations that disturb binocular vision during the first several weeks of life result in a chronic strabismus with characteristics that closely match those in human patients. Early onset strabismus is associated with altered binocular sensitivity of neurons in visual cortex. Here we test the

Primary Care for Refugees: Challenges and Opportunities.

Since 1975, more than 3 million refugees have settled in the United States, fleeing unrest, conflict, and persecution. Refugees represent diverse ethnic, cultural, religious, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds. Despite this heterogeneity, there are commonalities in the refugee experience. Before resettlement, all refugees must undergo an overseas medical screening to detect conditions that pose a potential health threat in the United States. On arrival, they should undergo an examination to detect diseases with high prevalence in their country of origin or departure. Refugees have high

Immunomodulatory topographies regulate myofibroblast differentiation and influence fibrous encapsulation of glaucoma drainage devices.

Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the primary driver of glaucoma, and lowering IOP remains essential for preventing vision loss. Glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) help reduce IOP but often fail due to fibrosis. This study identifies surface micro topographies capable of modulating the fibrotic response to GDDs both in vitro and in vivo. Using the TopoChip high-throughput platform (2176 topographies), we fabricated poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene) SIBS based micro topographies and screened them for their effects on human Tenon fibroblast adhesion and transdifferentiation, as we

Silent sicklers and traumatic hyphema: the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion.

A previously healthy 6-year-old white boy presented emergently after trauma to his right eye. On examination, intraocular pressure (IOP) was 49 mm Hg, and visual acuity was 20/50. He was diagnosed with a 3 mm layering hyphema. Despite medical therapy and lifestyle modifications, the patient's IOP continued to rise, peaking at 77 mm Hg on day 3 after presentation. Given his elevated IOP despite the addition of new topical medications on daily follow-up, the patient was screened for sickle-cell disease to assess for an underlying pathology that could be exacerbating his elevated IOP. After testi

Scent and the Cinema.

From the very earliest days of public cinema (moving pictures), there has been consideration about how odors and scents might influence the viewer's experience. While initially this was primarily a concern with how to eliminate the malodor of the cinema-goers themselves, in more recent times, there have been a number of well-publicized attempts to add synchronized pleasant (and, on occasion, also unpleasant) scents to "enhance" the cinema experience. While early solutions such as AromaRama and Smell-O-Vision were beset by technical challenges, low-tech scratch and sniff (Odorama) and, more rec

Automatic identification of myopia based on ocular appearance images using deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Myopia is the leading cause of visual impairment and affects millions of children worldwide. Timely and annual manual optometric screenings of the entire at-risk population improve outcomes, but screening is challenging due to the lack of availability and training of assessors and the economic burden imposed by the screenings. Recently, deep learning and computer vision have shown powerful potential for disease screening. However, these techniques have not been applied to large-scale myopia screening using ocular appearance images. METHODS: We trained a deep learning system (DLS)

A deep learning-based silhouette gait detection framework for fall risk classification in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a rapidly growing neurodegenerative disorder associated with gait impairment, functional decline, and increased fall risk. Conventional clinical assessments rely heavily on brief observational scales and are limited by subjectivity and environmental bias. There is a pressing need for objective, quantitative, and scalable digital assessment tools to support precision management of PD. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate a smartphone-video-based gait assessment system aligned with a clinically meaningful pathway encompassing PD screening,

A single-camera video-based assessment of locomotive syndrome using pose-silhouette fusion model.

Locomotive syndrome (LS), characterized by declining mobility due to musculoskeletal disorders, significantly affects older adults and is highly prevalent in Japan. Early detection and intervention are crucial to mitigate disease progression and preserve quality of life. Current diagnostic methods rely on subjective self-reports and labor-intensive clinical assessments, underscoring the need for automated, objective, and scalable screening tools. Building on our previous work, this study presents an updated deep learning-based computer vision model for LS screening using single-camera walking

A Good Way to Reduce Screening for Retinopathy of Prematurity: Development of the ROP Model in a China Preterm Population.

Importance: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a preventable cause of blindness in children. Without treatment, more than 45% of eyes may suffer permanent vision loss. Current ROP screening guidelines, which include a range of birth weights (BWs) and gestational ages (GAs), may require screening many low-risk preemies who might develop severe ROP. Method: All high-risk infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from 2017 to 2021 were included in this retrospective cohort study. Each of the 27 candidate risk factors was evaluated

Association between greater residential greenness and decreased risk of preschool myopia and astigmatism.

OBJECTIVE: Rapid urbanization has led to reduced greenness in many areas, this has been linked to adverse health outcomes. The aim was to determine the association between residential greenness experienced during very early childhood with preschool myopia and astigmatism and to explore the potential mediating role of screen time on any associations. METHOD: Information regarding socio-demographic characteristics, home address, screen time during early childhood, and refraction data from vision screenings of 53,575 preschoolers from Longhua Child Cohort Study were collected via questionnaires.…

A Comparison of Change Blindness in Real-World and On-Screen Viewing of Museum Artefacts.

Change blindness is a phenomenon of visual perception that occurs when a stimulus undergoes a change without this being noticed by its observer. To date, the effect has been produced by changing images displayed on screen as well as changing people and objects in an individual's environment. In this experiment, we combine these two approaches to directly compare the levels of change blindness produced in real-world vs. on-screen viewing of museum artefacts. In the real-world viewing condition, one group of participants viewed a series of pairs of similar but slightly different artefacts across
