Safe and effective prescribing with dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: The term 'dyslexia' refers to a condition that impacts upon reading and writing abilities whilst not altering intelligence. Individuals with dyslexia may have difficulties with the speed and accuracy and their reading and writing, amongst other issues. Dyslexia is not automatically considered a disability but is a protected characteristic under the UK Equality Act (2010), and therefore employers and educational institutions are required to provide 'reasonable adjustments' in order to allow individuals to reach their full potential. There is a lack of research on this issue, but wha…

Translating Interdisciplinary Research on Language Learning into Identifying Specific Learning Disabilities in Verbally Gifted and Average Children and Youth.

The current research was grounded in prior interdisciplinary research that showed cognitive ability (verbal ability for translating cognitions into oral language) and multiple-working memory endophenotypes (behavioral markers of genetic or brain bases of language learning) predict reading and writing achievement in students with and without specific learning disabilities in written language (SLDs-WL). Results largely replicated prior findings that verbally gifted with dyslexia score higher on reading and writing achievement than those with average verbal ability but not on endophenotypes. The …

Difficult conversations: teaching medical oncology trainees communication skills one hour at a time.

Difficult conversations about prognosis, end of life, and goals of care arise commonly in medical oncology practice. These conversations are … ractive and engaging educational methods, including sociodramatic techniques, role-play, reflective writing, and Balint-type case discussion groups. Medical oncologists in their second and third years of training served as teaching assistants and peer mentors. Learners had the opportunity to practice skills during sessions and with patients between sessio …

Enhancement of brain event-related potentials to speech sounds is associated with compensated reading skills in dyslexic children with familial risk for dyslexia.

Specific reading disability, dyslexia, is a prevalent and heritable disorder impairing reading acquisition characterized by a phonological d … r performance in behavioral phonemic length discrimination task, as well as with better reading and writing accuracy. Source analyses revealed that the brain responses of sub-group of dyslexic children with largest responses originated from a more posterior area of the right temporal cortex as compared to the responses of the other participants. This is t …

Primary bowing tremor: a task-specific movement disorder of string instrumentalists.

Fear of a tremulous or unsteady bow is widespread among string instrumentalists. Faulty technique and performance anxiety have generally bee … tive string players afflicted by these other disorders. Analogy of this tremor is made with primary writing tremor, a well-defined task-specific movement disorder also sharing at least some features with both essential tremor and writers' cramp, a focal dystonia. Hence, it was decided to call this primary bowing tremor. Clinical features, family history, …

Modulation of reflex responses in hand muscles during rhythmical finger tasks in a subject with writer's cramp.

The objective of this study was to examine phase- and task-dependent modulation of stretch reflexes during repetitive finger movements in writer's cramp, and compare them with normal controls from our previous study. A subject with writer's cramp conducted two rhythmic tasks, index finger abduction (RFA) and a pen-squeezing (RPS) task akin to handwriting. Stretch reflexes were evoked by mechanical perturbations at random phases of each task. Surface electromyograms (EMG) were recorded from two hand muscles, first dorsal interosseous (FDI) and flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS). The reflex re…

A Letter to My Friend and Chaplain Colleague Imam Sohaib Sultan, Zichrono Livracha (of Blessed Memory).

I am a Jewish chaplain and I felt moved to write this letter to my esteemed colleague Imam Sohaib Sultan, of blessed memory. Sohaib and I each experienced our first unit of Clinical Pastoral Education together as part of the same cohort in the summer of 2008. Sohaib died tragically in 2021. Here, I reflect on how we might respond to the current Israel-Hamas War.

Can no-fault compensation of impaired infants alleviate the malpractice crisis in obstetrics?

In 1987, Virginia initiated no-fault compensation for birth-related neurological injuries in an attempt to ensure the availability of malpractice insurance for the state's obstetricians. This paper explores some possible causes for the refusal of Virginia's insurers to write malpractice coverage for obstetricians and analyzes the ability of the act to resolve the medical malpractice crisis in obstetrics. It also examines the effect of this limited no-fault compensation scheme on obstetricians' incentives and on the welfare of neurologically damaged children.

Primary task-specific bowing tremor: an entity of its own?

A professional violinist in his early 60s, playing in a prestigious German orchestra for more than 20 years, presented to our institute because of a task-induced tremor in his right arm when playing the violin. We describe the phenomenology of this tremor and its treatment options and compare it to findings in primary writing tremor (PWT). We then discuss whether primary bowing tremor is an entity of its own (similar to PWT) and propose hypotheses that would derive from such a definition.

[Occupational carpal tunnel syndrome: the case of a secretary].

We report a case of carpal tunnel syndrome which occurred in a office secretary, whose job task was mainly type writing. Occupational origin of this disease was stressed based on unilateral lesion, absence of personal and familial risk factors. Working conditions seem to explain the occurrence of symptoms. The recognition of occupational origin is important for physicians, because it eases the implementation of ergonomic sound measures which supply medical treatment. It also allows to take into account medico-legal aspects.

Olivopontocerebellar atrophy: paraneoplastic syndrome of brain tumour?

We describe a patient who, three years after the onset of an olivopontocerebellar atrophy, developed a right cerebral tumour. The cerebellar symptomatology also included, as in other cerebellar patients previously described, a peripheral dysgraphia. Because this deficit of writing is generally reported in patients with right cerebral lesion, the authors hypothesized that functional alterations of supratentorial structures preceding the tumour by years may be able to damage the neural substrates connecting cerebral and cerebellar structures and to produce cerebellar atrophy.

[The elementary school as a cause of criminal development. Dyslexia for example (author's transl)].

The observation of children with singular weaknesses in reading and writing with good scholastic performance in other subjects goes back to the last century. Concrete steps were, however, only taken after insistent clinical publications in the fifties. Most recently, bureaucratic decisions on school matters hinder the assistance to dyslexic children so that the danger of criminal development increases. The psychiatric view of the disease picture and the possibilities of rehabilitation are contrasted with these tendencies, congenital dyscalculia also being briefly discussed.

Torsion dystonia: a case report.

A 35-year-old black female with typical torsion dystonia is discussed. Tremors in the right upper extremity began with a febrile illness at age eight. Difficulty in using the extremity began two years later. Overt writhing movements and torticollis began at age 17. The disorder has been progressive, but not disabling. Neurological examination revealed only extrapyramidal motor system dysfunction. Serum dopamine Beta hydroxylase levels were normal, and an evaluation for Wilson's disease was negative. A sibling has minor writing difficulties.

Postoperative acalculous cholecystitis due to Torulopsis glabrata.

Acute acalculous cholecystitis due to Torulopis glabrata, an opportunistic yeast, developed postoperatively in a 70-year-old man who had an extremely complicated course after resection of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The infection first appeared as an acute surgical abdomen, three days after resumption of solid food intake subsequent to a prolonged ileus and after 31 days of parenteral hyperalimentation. The condition was successfully treated by cholecystostomy; at the time of writing, six months after cholecystostomy, there are no gastrointestinal symptoms.

Regarding the paper "Evaluation of the effect of reducing metal artifacts in multi-detector CT imaging of zirconia and titanium implants" accepted: February 17, 2025.

I am writing to raise concerns regarding the above-mentioned paper, specifically related to the phantom used in the study "Evaluation of the Effect of Reducing Metal Artifacts in Multi-Detector CT Imaging of Zirconia and Titanium Implants" Accepted: February 17, 2025 Oral Radiology https://doi.org/10.1007/s11282-025-00814-5 ". In this paper, the authors state that they created a phantom that I designed and commissioned a specialist company to create. This phantom was designed for CBCT, not CT, and was designed by me to reflect the shape of the mandible to some extent in CT scans, while minimiz…

The saving enhanced memory effect can be observed when only a subset of items are saved.

Saving one list of words, such as on a computer or by writing them down, can improve a person's ability to learn and remember a second list of words that are not saved. This phenomenon, known as the saving enhanced memory effect, is typically observed by comparing the recall of nonsaved items when other items are saved versus when they are not saved. In past research, the effect has been shown to occur when participants save an entire list before learning a new list. In the current research, we examined whether the effect can be observed when participants save a subset of items within a single…

Birth weight and bone mineral density at 18-19 years: birth cohort 1997-1998.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between birth weight and bone mineral density (BMD) in adolescence. METHODS: A birth cohort study in São Luís, Maranhão, using data from two moments: at birth and at 18-19 years. Exposure was the birth weight in grams, continuously analyzed. The outcome was BMD, using the Z-score index (whole body) measured by double X-ray densitometry (Dexa). A theoretical model was constructed in acyclic graphs to identify the minimum set of adjustment variables - household income, the mother knowing how to read and write at the time of birth, prenatal care, tobacco use
