Acute pain transfusion reaction.

A 34-year-old woman with a diagnosis of hemophagocytic lymphohistocytosis (HLH) received a double umbilical cord blood transplantation following a myeloablative chemotherapy preparative regimen with busulfan and cyclophosphamide. HLH is a rare, potentially fatal hematologic disorder characterized by the overactivation of histocytes and T lymphocytes, leading to organ infiltration and acute illness. On day 25 post-transplantation, the patient required a platelet transfusion for a platelet count of 6,000 per ml (normal range = 150,000-450,000 per ml). The patient's blood type prior to the cord b

Factors that influence platelet recovery after transfusion: resolving donor quality from ABO compatibility.

BACKGROUND: A system was established to examine the extent to which the apheresis donor determines platelet recovery after transfusion, to measure the impact of ABO identity, and to predict outcome by evaluating the donor. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The percentage of platelet recovery was measured after prophylactic transfusion of apheresis units divided from single donors to paired recipients with uncomplicated thrombocytopenia secondary to leukemia chemotherapy. Platelet microaggregation induced by citrate was measured at the time of apheresis. RESULTS: Platelet recoveries in paired recipie

Aggressive periodontitis: A clinico-hematological appraisal.

BACKGROUND: Human leukocyte antigens (HLA) have been considered a candidate of genetic risk markers for aggressive periodontitis (AP). AP has also been associated with polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) dysfunction. The role of monocyte subsets in AP has also not been completely explored. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to assess in, AP subjects, the possible association between defective PMN adhesion and β2-integrin expression; defective neutrophil migration and actin polymerization level; the expression of ABO blood group and HLA antigen; and the percentage of CD14+ CD16+ monocyte

Creating Options for Difficult-to-match Kidney Transplant Candidates.

BACKGROUND: Most transplantation centers recognize a small patient population that unsuccessfully participates in all available, both living and deceased donor, transplantation programs for many years: the difficult-to-match patients. This population consists of highly immunized and/or ABO blood group O or B patients. METHODS: To improve their chances, Computerized Integration of Alternative Transplantation programs (CIAT) were developed to integrate kidney paired donation, altruistic/unspecified donation, and ABO and HLA desensitization. To compare CIAT with reality, a simulation was perform

Differences in maternal-newborn ABO blood groups and risk of serious infant infection.

BACKGROUND: During pregnancy, various maternal IgG antibodies are transferred to the developing fetus, some of which may protect the newborn against infection. If a mother and her fetus have different A, B or O (ABO) blood groups, then transferred maternal antibodies may plausibly protect the infant against infection. AIM: To determine if maternal-newborn ABO blood group incongruence vs. congruence is associated with a lower risk of serious infection in the infant. DESIGN: Retrospective population-based cohort. METHODS: We used linked patient-level datasets for all singleton hospital livebi

Assessment of the influence of ABO blood groups on oral cholera vaccine immunogenicity in a cholera endemic area in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) which include the ABO and Lewis antigen systems have been known for determining predisposition to infections. For instance, blood group O individuals have a higher risk of severe illness due to V. cholerae compared to those with non-blood group O antigens. We set out to determine the influence that these HBGAs have on oral cholera vaccine immunogenicity and seroconversion in individuals residing within a cholera endemic area in Zambia. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a longitudinal study nested under a clinical trial in which samples from a cohort of 2

Challenges in defining type 2M von Willebrand disease: results from a Canadian cohort study.

BACKGROUND/METHODS: In order to better characterize the genotype-phenotype correlation in type 2M von Willebrand disease (VWD), we sequenced the coding region for the mature subunit of the von Willebrand factor (VWF) gene (exons 18-52, including exon/intron boundaries) in 16 index cases originally submitted to the Canadian Type 1 VWD Study as type 1 VWD, but reclassified as type 2M VWD on the basis of phenotype (excessive mucocutaneous bleeding and von Willebrand factor: antigen (VWF:Ag) and/or von Willebrand factor: ristocetin cofactor (VWF:RCo) between 0.05 and 0.50 IU mL(-1) on at least two

Characterization of recessive severe type 1 and 3 von Willebrand Disease (VWD), asymptomatic heterozygous carriers versus bloodgroup O-related von Willebrand factor deficiency, and dominant type 1 VWD.

Recessive type 3 von Willebrand disease (VWD) is caused by homozygosity or double heterozygosity for two non-sense mutations (null alleles). Type 3 VWD is easy to diagnose by the combination of a strongly prolonged bleeding time (BT), absence of ristocetine-induced platelet aggregation (RIPA), absence of von Willebrand factor (VWF) protein, and prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) due to factor VIII:coagulant (FVIII:C) deficiency. VWD type 3 is associated with a pronounced tendency to mucocutaneous and musculoskeletal bleedings since early childhood. Carriers of one null alle

von Willebrand disease: recent advances in pathophysiology and treatment.

This review focuses on new developments in the pathophysiology and treatment of von Willebrand disease (vWd). New aspects of the cell biology, gene control, and structure-function correlates of von Willebrand factor (vWf) are reviewed. vWd is more prevalent than previously recognized, affecting up to 1% of the population; this is particularly evident in women's health. Blood group is an important determinant of von Willebrand factor levels; individuals of blood group O tend to have lower plasma levels of vWf than those in other blood groups. Currently available blood tests of vWf quantity and

The effects of hemoglobin genotype and ABO blood group on the formation of rosettes by Plasmodium falciparum-infected red blood cells.

The mechanisms by which the hemoglobin genotype AS protect against severe malaria are not fully understood. We have investigated the possibility that protection might be achieved through an inability of red blood cells (RBC) with the AS genotype to form rosettes with RBC infected by Plasmodium falciparum. No evidence was obtained to support this hypothesis because RBC with the AS genotype formed rosettes with wild isolates of P. falciparum as readily as RBC with the AA genotype. However, the previous finding that parasitized RBC form rosettes more readily with RBC belonging to group A or B tha

N-glycolylneuraminic acid and N-acetylneuraminic acid define feline blood group A and B antigens.

Blood group incompatibility causes transfusion reactions and neonatal isoerythrolysis in cats. We investigated the molecular nature of the blood group antigens from cats that had blood type A, B, and AB erythrocytes. Naturally occurring anti-type B antibodies, Triticum vulgaris lectin, monoclonal antibody (MoAb) 32-27, and MoAb R-24 were used in agglutination tests, Western blots, and thin-layer chromatography (TLC) enzyme immunostaining. Type A erythrocytes had NeuGc-NeuGc-Galactose-Glucose-Ceramide ([NeuGc]2GD3) where NeuGc represents N-glycolylneuraminic acid, and NeuAc-NeuGc-GD3, where Neu

[Antigenicity of trophoblast cells and their significance for placentation and tolerance of human allogenic ova ].

Due to the elucidation of transplantation phenomena of the human allogenic egg, as yet unknown, the antigenicity of each trophoblastic cells was estimated using a cell culture technique introducing the immunofluorescence method. It was studied by means of an immunological model like the fetomaternal incompatibility in the classic AB0-blood system. The in vitro cultured placenta cells (epithelials cells of the chorionic villi, the Langhanscells, the Hofbauercells and also their's daughter cells) were investigated concerning the presence of A- and B-bloodgroup antigens, whereas the direct and in

Expression of A and B tissue isoantigens in benign and malignant lesions of the breast.

AB isoantigens are widely distributed in human tissues and loss of AB isoantigen expression has been shown to be an early marker for carcinomatous transformation in some tissues. We therefore applied the Specific Red Cell Adherence Reaction (SRCA) for detection and localization of AB isoantigens in tissue to the study of benign and malignant proliferative lesions of the breast. Twenty-nine lesions in 19 patients were studied. AB isoantigen expression in normal breast tissue was found to be largely confined to the mammary duct system. Loss of AB isoantigen expression was a consistent feature of
