Evoked potentials (EP), including short-latency brainstem auditory and somatosensory EP, have been studied in 80 patients with myofascial pain syndrome. Brainstem dysfunction, predominantly on the ponto-mesencephalic level, and conduction delay in the somatosensory pathway on the supraspinal level have been found in patients with natal trauma of cervical spine, being most significant in patients with severe myofascial pain syndrome. EP findings showed impairments of afferent structures of nervous system and inefficiency of antinociceptive system of supraspinal level in this group of patients t

The visual magnocellular pathway is known to play a central part in visuospatial attention and in directing attention to specific parts of the visual world in serial search. It is proposed that, in the case of reading, this mechanism is trained to perform a sequential gating of visual information coming into the primary visual cortex to enable further orderly processing by the ventral stream. This scheme, taken together with the potential for plasticity between the different afferent channels in the case of a relative impairment of the magnocellular system, can provide some limited rationale f

The mammalian carotid body (CB) is a peripheral chemosensory organ that controls ventilation and is innervated by both afferent and efferent nerve fibres. The afferent pathway is stimulated by chemoexcitants, such as hypoxia, hypercapnia and acidosis. The efferent pathway causes inhibition of the sensory discharge via release of NO that originates mainly from neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS)-positive autonomic neurones within the glossopharyngeal nerve (GPN). Recent studies in the rat indicate that these inhibitory GPN neurones and their processes express purinergic P2X receptors and can

UNLABELLED: Stimulation of peripheral nociceptors results in increased c-Fos labeling in spinal cord regions associated with nociceptive processing. Accordingly, intracolonic capsaicin, which generates robust secondary (referred) allodynia on the abdomen of mice, also causes an increased spinal c-Fos labeling. In naïve rodents, low intensity innocuous stimulation does not affect c-Fos labeling in spinal nociceptive regions. However, after persistent noxious input, low intensity stimulation of the inflamed region further enhances c-Fos labeling, suggesting that low threshold mechanosensitive fi

Acupuncture or acupuncture-like stimulation applied to different body areas can modify autonomic nerve activity to various organs, including gut, bladder, adrenal medulla, and the heart. We studied the reflex bradycardia in response to insertion into the skin and underlying muscles and twisting of an acupuncture needle in pentobarbital-anesthetized rats. We found that acupuncture-like stimulation of forelimb, hindlimb, chest, and abdomen all produced significant heart rate decreases. Rate minima were reached at the end of the 60-second stimulation episode and significant bradycardia persisted

1. The activation of climbing fibres projecting to the posterior lobe cerebellar cortex by focal stimulation of the cerebral corticofugal pathway was investigated in anaesthetised rats. Large climbing fibre responses were evoked in parts of crus II and paramedian lobule by stimulation of corticofugal fibres. Lesions of the pyramidal tract just rostral to the inferior olive substantially reduced these responses, suggesting that they were not mediated by relays in the rostral brainstem. 2. By comparison of latencies of climbing fibre responses evoked from different locations in the corticofugal

The effects of clonidine, a central alpha 2 agonist, on changes in blood pressure caused by muscle afferent nerve (ergoreceptor) activation and baroreceptor manipulation were studied in cats. Prolonged isometric contractions (ergoreceptor activation) of the gastrocnemius and plantaris muscles increased mean arterial pressure by 53 mmHg. This pressor response was not altered by naloxone (0.5 mumol.litre-1) but was eliminated by clonidine (0.5-2.0 micrograms) when injected into the cerebral aqueduct. Brief occlusion of the carotid artery (15-30 s) caused mean arterial pressure to increase by 32-

In addition to projections through the vagus, cervical sympathetic, and aortic depressor nerves, baroreceptor afferents from the arch of the aorta are thought to rise through a superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) pathway in the rat. We evaluated this possibility, first, by determining the hemodynamic response to electrical stimulation of the SLN in anesthetized rats. Miniaturized pulsed-Doppler flow probes were placed on the right common iliac, superior mesenteric and left renal arteries. Stimulation of the SLN produced frequency-dependent (1-12 Hz) reductions in arterial pressure, heart rate and r

To investigate the role of repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (RPMS) on the postural component of motor performances, the long-lasting modulatory effect of RPMS on the stabilization of the elbow joint was examined in 13 healthy subjects. The resistance against very slow passive movements in the relaxed state was recorded simultaneously with the electromyogram (EMG) of the forearm extensor and flexor muscles. The experiments show that RPMS performed on the forearm flexor muscles increased the degree of stabilization of the elbow joint, whereas RPMS on the forearm extensor muscles caused

1. GABA receptor-modulating drugs and intracellular recording techniques were used to determine the functional significance of peripheral afferent GABA-containing nerves projecting from the distal colon to sympathetic neurones in the inferior mesenteric ganglion of the guinea-pig. 2. GABAA receptor-modulating drugs added selectively to the inferior mesenteric ganglion side of a two-compartment bath had pronounced effects on on-going colonic afferent cholinergic synaptic input. Bicuculline (20 microM) decreased the amplitude and frequency of fast excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) by 40

Some results suggesting the existence of gluco- and/or insulin-sensitive sites within the central nervous system (CNS) are recalled. In summary, it seems that when these sites are activated by the presence of glucose or insulin, there is an activation of the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for an increased peripheral insulin secretion and/or an hypoglycemia. This could possibly favour glucose disposal. Inversely, when the CNS lacks energy substrates, a cascade of events occurs which tend to increase peripheral glycemia. Bilateral lesions of the ventromedial hypothalamus (VM

Among patients with RFC1 spectrum disorders represented by the phenotype of cerebellar ataxia with neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS), at least 60% are known to manifest chronic, paroxysmal, and spasmodic dry cough. Chronic cough is a key diagnostic feature of RFC1-related diseases. It is often the first symptom and, in some cases, precedes neurological symptoms such as ataxia and sensory disturbance for more than 30 years. Although the pathogenesis of the cough remains unclear, it is possible that impairment of the vagus nerve, which includes an afferent pathway of the coug

Urinary urgency and frequency are common in α-synucleinopathies such as Parkinson disease, Lewy body dementia, and multiple system atrophy. These symptoms cannot be managed with dopamine therapy, and their underlying pathophysiology is unclear. We show that in individuals with Parkinson disease, Lewy body dementia, or multiple system atrophy, α-synuclein pathology accumulates in the lateral collateral pathway, a region of the sacral spinal dorsal horn important for the relay of pelvic visceral afferents. Deposition of α-synuclein in this region may contribute to impaired micturition and/or con

D-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) produces distortions of visual perception and analgesia. Evidence is advanced from a functional standpoint that the observed visual effects result from an attenuation of light-evoked input to the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) from the purely centripetal pathways of the retina. More slowly responding visual afferents or those with more complex receptive fields seem to be affected most. LSD analgesia, accompanied by severe psychotic symptoms, appears to result from drug actions on a centrifugally controlled pain system involving neurons of the midbrai

Breathing is a fundamental motor rhythm necessary to sustain life. The rhythm and pattern of breathing arises from the coordination of a rostrocaudally extended ventral respiratory column (VRC) in the medulla. Although recurrent excitation is sufficient for rhythmic bursting in reduced in vitro preparations, comparatively less is understood about how inhibition and excitation interact with feedback circuits to generate the breathing rhythm in vivo. Here, we expand on the classical "inspiratory-off switch" model that inhibitory signaling from lung stretch afferent pathways plays a critical role…

In mammals the mechanisms underlying female sexual and reproductive biology are poorly understood. Little attention has been paid to striated muscles and their neural regulation. The aim of the present study was to describe the components of the vaginocavernosus reflex in adult rabbits. It was found that mechanical stimulation of the glans of the clitoris and the perineal vagina induced electromyographic (EMG) responses in bulbocavernosus (Bcm) and ischiocavernosus (Icm) muscles. Unilateral and bilateral nerve transection indicated that the clitoral nerve is the main afferent path of the refle

For some time, dystonia has been seen as purely a motor disorder. Relatively novel concepts published approximately 10 years ago also presumed that in the development of dystonic dyskinesias, only motor behaviour was abnormal. Neurophysiological observations of various types of dystonic disorders, which were performed using sophisticated electromyography, polymyography, H-reflex examination, long-latency reflex, etc., as well as new insights into the behaviour of dystonia, have urged the inclusion of sensory (particularly somatosensory) mechanisms into the pathophysiological background of dyst

The dissection of 100 external jugular veins in 50 cadavers was the object of this anatomic study. A certain number of notions concerning the afferent veins, the mode of termination and the valvular system of this vessel were defined. 1) Afferent veins. Along its pathway toward the deep venous system, the external jugular vein successively received: the transverse cervical vein in 88 cases (88%), usually opposite the intersection of the external jugular vein with the dorsal border of the sterno- cleidomastoid muscle; the suprascapular vein in 47 cases (47%); the anterior jugular vein in 46 cas

A systematic study of vagal and splanchnic projections to the VMH area was undertaken in anaesthetized cats by means of macroelectrodes and microelectrodes. Responses elicited by vagal and splanchnic nerve stimulation were recorded from the VMH nucleus and the region situated above it. The fact that they are identical, whatever the nerve stimulated, indicates that the afferences follow a common central pathway. From the response latency and the stimulation parameters, it is assumed that the small vagal and splanchnic fibres (A delta, B and C) are involved. Evoked potentials are generally const

This review article aims to summarize the recent advancement in basic research on lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) following spinal cord injury (SCI) above the sacral level. We particularly focused on the neurophysiologic mechanisms controlling the lower urinary tract (LUT) function and the SCI-induced changes in micturition control in animal models of SCI. The LUT has two main functions, the storage and voiding of urine, that are regulated by a complex neural control system. This neural system coordinates the activity of two functional units in the LUT: the urinary bladder and an outlet
