The gastrointestinal tract is the most common site for extranodal involvement by non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. However, primary appendiceal lymphomas presenting as perforated acute appendicitis are very rare: they occur in only 0.015% of all gastrointestinal lymphoma cases. The management of this condition is still controversial, and a multimodality approach (e.g., surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy) is the optimal treatment. In these cases, appendiceal non-Hodgkin's lymphomas typically manifest with acute symptoms in patients with no prior lymphoma history. Additionally, we treated our pa

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS)/hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is the procedure of choice in patients with peritoneal dissemination from appendiceal cancer. Although recurrence rates are 26%-44% after first CRS/HIPEC, the role of repeated CRS/HIPEC has not been well defined. We hypothesize that patients undergoing multiple CRS/HIPEC's have meaningful long term survival.
METHODS: A retrospective study of a prospective database of 294 patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) was conducted, of these 162 had PC of appendiceal origin. Twenty-six of these patients und

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are used in the management of selected peritoneal malignancies. While most patients achieve long-term disease-free survival, there remains a group with early recurrence (ER). We aim to investigate the clinical factors associated with ER.
METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database of CRS-HIPEC patients treated between April 2001 and Feb 2016 was performed. ER was defined as recurrence within 12 months of CRS-HIPEC. Patients were stratified according to time to recurrence an

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) is standard treatment for peritoneal dissemination from appendiceal cancer (AC); however, its role in high-grade histopathologic subtypes (high-grade mucinous carcinoma peritonei [HGMCP] and HGMCP with signet ring cells [HGMCP-S]) is controversial due to their aggressive behavior. This study analyzed clinical outcomes of high-grade AC after CRS/HIPEC.
METHODS: A prospective database of CRS/HIPEC procedures for HGMCP performed from 1998-2017 was reviewed. Perioperative variables and survival were analyz

BACKGROUND: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a prognostic factor and target treatment for metastatic colorectal and ovarian cancer. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has improved survival on peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) from appendiceal cancer. We hypothesize that tumoral high expression of VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) is a negative prognostic factor for survival in patients with PC from appendiceal cancer.
METHODS: A retrospective study of a prospective database revealed 89 patients with PC from appendiceal cancer who underwent 127 C

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a disease that results from a perforated mucinous neoplasm of the appendix so that mucinous ascites and mucin-producing tumor cells are widely disseminated in a characteristic pattern throughout the abdomen and pelvis. The intraabdominal mucus can accumulate in the inguinal canal and by physical examination be indistinguishable from the usual inguinal hernia.
METHODS: A database of patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei was used to identify patients who had an inguinal hernia prior to or at the time of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and perioperative hyperther

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, patients treated conservatively for periappendiceal abscess or phlegmon would subsequently undergo interval appendectomy (IA); however, recent evidence has shed doubt on the necessity of this procedure. This study aimed to assess the outcomes of patients who underwent IA, in comparison with those operated acutely for appendicitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis identified patients who underwent IA between 2000 and 2016. Their course and outcomes were compared with those of our previously published cohort of patients who underwent appendectomy for ac
