MR of terminal myelocystoceles.

PURPOSE: To delineate the clinical and MR findings in children with an unusual type of spinal dysraphism, the terminal myelocystocele. Infants with a terminal myelocystocele carry a favorable neurologic prognosis if the entity is diagnosed early. Understanding the MR characteristics of this entity will allow for earlier and more accurate diagnosis. METHOD: Analysis of the medical charts and MR studies in 15 children with surgically and histologically proven myelocystocele. RESULTS: In all 15 children, MR demonstrated the primary findings of a terminal cyst of the central canal of the spinal

Magnetic resonance imaging of the fetus: a study of 20 cases performed without curarization.

Twenty patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at a mean gestational age of 32 weeks. There were 12 patients with suspected fetal brain abnormality and four with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), while the remaining four cases were studied for other reasons. The MRI examinations were performed on a 0.5 Tesla machine, with surface coils. One minute acquisition time T1 sequences were used. All the studies were performed without fetal curarization, and only under maternal sedation using flunitrazepam given per os 1 h before MRI examination. Three examinations were incomplete bec

Bobble-head doll syndrome: report of 2 cases and a review of the literature, with video documentation of the clinical phenomenon.

Bobble-head doll syndrome (BHDS) is a rare pediatric movement disorder presenting with involuntary 2- to 3-Hz head movements. Common signs and symptoms also found on presentation include macrocephaly, ataxia, developmental delay, optic disc pallor or atrophy, hyperreflexia, tremor, obesity, endocrinopathy, visual disturbance or impairment, headache, and vomiting, among others. The syndrome is associated with suprasellar cysts, third ventricular cysts, or aqueductal obstruction, along with a few other less common conditions. The cause of involuntary head motions is not understood. Treatment is

Prevalence of neurological disorders in French bulldog: a retrospective study of 343 cases (2002-2016).

BACKGROUND: French Bulldog (FB) has significantly gained in popularity over the last few years, and seems to be frequently affected by various neurological conditions. The purpose of this retrospective study was to report the prevalences of neurological diseases in a large population of FB, presented with neurological signs between 2002 and 2016, and for which a definitive diagnosis was established. A secondary objective was to identify epidemiological characteristics regarding specific diseases in this singular breed. RESULTS: During the study period, 533 FBs were presented for neurological

Case report of glomus jugulare tumour associated with a posterior fossa cyst.

A subgroup of complex glomus jugulare tumours exists. This includes: multiple, giant or neuropeptide-secreting lesions; those associated with other lesions, such as dural arterio-venous malformation or an adrenal tumour; and tumours in which there has been previous treatment with adverse outcome. To our knowledge, we present the first case of a glomus jugulare tumour associated with a posterior fossa cyst. This entity should be included in the subgroup of complex glomus jugulare tumours.

Spinal arachnoid pseudocysts in 10 rottweilers.

Ten rottweilers presenting with spinal arachnoid pseudocysts were investigated. In six dogs, the lesions were localised dorsally at C2-C3; in three dogs, dorsally and ventrally at C5-C6; and, in one dog, dorsally and ventrally at C6-C7. Clinical signs were consistent with focal compression of the affected spinal cord segments. The animals showed ataxia of all four limbs, with truncal ataxia and marked hypermetria in cases of C2-C3 involvement, or ambulatory tetraparesis in cases of C5-C6 or C6-C7 involvement. Other than signs indicative of spina bifida in one dog, no abnormalities could be det

Growing skull fractures (craniocerebral erosion).

The incidence of growing skull fractures ranges from less than 0.05% to 1.6%. We reviewed 22 growing skull fracture patients retrospectively. There were 15 boys and seven girls ranging in age from newborn to 6 years (mean: 12.4 months) at the time of injury. Falling was the most frequent cause of injury. In total, 17 patients presented with a scalp mass. The scalp was sunken over the bone defect in three patients. Other symptoms and signs were seizure in five patients, hemiparesis in four, recurrent meningitis in one, and pulsatile exophthalmus in one. The most common location was the parietal

Intracerebral cystic meningioma--case report.

A 46-year-old female presented with persistent bifrontal headache. Computed tomography revealed a large cystic tumor in the right temporoparietal area, which included a solid component. The tumor had no attachment to the dura. There was no peritumoral edema or mass effect usually found around cystic meningiomas. The solid component was totally removed. Histological examination indicated that the tumor was a fibrous meningioma. Intracerebral meningioma with a large cystic component without dural attachment should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cystic cerebral tumors.

The role of CT-imaging in recognizing the type of hydrocephalus and porencephaly in children.

Intrauterine USG examination becomes more and more important in diagnosing developmental lesions of cerebral nervous tissue. However, CT-imaging is a method of choice, especially after parietal closure (13, 16). The character and etiology of porencephaly, congenital or acquired, is diversiform and often difficult to recognize (18). This paper presents an attempt at assessing different forms of porencephaly, taking into account congenital hydrocephalus in children by means of CT-imaging.

A comparison of computed tomography and air ventriculography in diagnosis of progressive hydrocephalus of infancy.

We have compared the efficacy of computed tomography (CT) and air ventriculography (VGM) in the diagnostic evaluation of progressive nontumoral infant hydrocephalus where both examinations have been done without significant interventing time or treatment in infants under 12 months of age. CT alone was judged to be adequate for diagnosis and treatment 21 of 30 cases reviewed, provided that cerebrospinal fluid studies were available to complete diagnosis where necessary, and provided that the question of ventriculocisternal communication was not a factor in treatment selection. The ability to vi

Intraosseous leptomeningeal cysts of the posterior cranial fossa.

Post-traumatic leptomeningeal cysts involving the occipital bone are intraosseous lesions which do not erode through the outer table, in contradistinction to leptomeningeal cysts elsewhere in the calvaria. In two of four reported cases, communicating hydrocephalus was associated with the intraosseous cyst. The clinical and radiological findings suggest that intraosseous leptomeningeal cyst of the posterior fossa represents a distinct entity. Resection of the cyst and closure of the dural defect may be less important than treatment of the communicating hydrocephalus.

Postural tremor as a manifestation of spontaneous intracranial hypotension.

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a syndrome caused by low cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure due to leakage of CSF. Clinically, orthostatic headache, neck pain, nausea, emesis, interscapular pain, diplopia, dizziness, changes in hearing, visual blurring and radicular upper extremity symptoms are most frequently observed. We describe a 57-year-old man with SIH who presented with postural tremor. CSF leakage was revealed by cranial MRI. Lumbar puncture identified low CSF pressure and intrathecal gadolinium enhanced MR cisternography showed diffuse CSF leakage in the thoracolumbar re

Fast dynamic imaging technique to identify obstructive lesions in the CSF space: report of 2 cases.

Disorders of CSF dynamics such as syringomyelia and obstructive hydrocephalus can be caused by thin mobile obstructive lesions not visible on traditional MRI sequences. New imaging techniques with balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) and dynamic imaging with bSSFP cine allow visualization of these pulsatile structures within the CSF space. The authors present 2 cases involving pediatric patients-one who developed presumed idiopathic syringomyelia and one with presumed communicating hydrocephalus in association with Pfeiffer syndrome-who harbored thin dynamic obstructive lesions seen o

Endoscopic treatment of in utero diagnosed multiloculated interhemispheric cyst in a newborn: case report.

Interhemispheric cysts, often associated with agenesis of corpus callosum, are rare lesions. The optimal treatment is still controversial. Placement of cystoperitoneal shunt and open microsurgery are traditional treatments. Neuroendoscopy in children is due to its minimal invasiveness a new emerging option. There have been a few published cases on neuroendoscopic treatment of interhemispheric cyst in children. The authors document the youngest reported child with multiloculated interhemispheric cyst that was treated with neuroendoscopy. The cyst was detected in a male fetus in 35th week of ges

Asymmetric development of tumor-like cysts in a child with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

We report a case of asymmetric development of tumor-like cysts in a child with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). The preliminary considerations were renal cell carcinoma and Wilms' tumor. After open biopsy, the patient was diagnosed with ADPKD with atypical renal cyst development. The development pattern of renal cysts in children with ADPKD is varied, and open biopsy is sometimes needed.

Expanding Ventricular Diverticulum Overlying the Cerebral Hemisphere through an Open-Lip Schizencephalic Cleft: A Report of Two Pediatric Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Open-lip-type schizencephaly is characterized by trans-cerebral clefts filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) between the subarachnoid space at the hemisphere surface and the lateral ventricles. Disorders related to CSF retention, including hydrocephalus and arachnoid cysts, have reportedly been associated with open-lip schizencephaly and have induced intracranial hypertension in some cases. However, detailed neuroimaging and surgical treatment findings have rarely been described. CASE PRESENTATION: We report 2 cases of open-lip schizencephaly with an expanding CSF-filled cavity …
