PURPOSE: To examine the relative presentation frequency of children with upper limb congenital anomalies at 3 Midwestern referral centers us … There were 480 extremities (74%) with a limb malformation including 184 involving the entire limb. Arthrogryposis was the most common of these (53 extremities). Anomalies affecting only the hand plate accounted for 62% (296) of the malformations. Of these, radial polydactyly (15%) was the most common specific anomaly, followed by symbrachydactyly (13%) and clef …

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Congenital pes valgus is a rare and complex deformity of the foot raising serious diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The purpose of our work was to present the surgical procedures used in our series and to analyze outcome.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten feet presenting congenital convex valgus treated surgically over a six-year period using the same operative technique were reviewed at minimum five years follow-up. Idiopathic deformities were excluded from this series. Deformities were secondary to arthrogryposis in five feet, a multiple malformative syndrome in four and …

Restrictive dermopathy (RD) is characterized by intrauterine growth retardation, tight and rigid skin with prominent superficial vessels, bone mineralization defects, dysplastic clavicles, arthrogryposis and early neonatal death. In two patients affected with RD, we recently reported two different heterozygous splicing mutations in the LMNA gene, leading to the production and accumulation of truncated Prelamin A. In other patients, a single nucleotide insertion was identified in ZMPSTE24. This variation is located in a homopolymeric repeat of thymines and introduces a premature termination cod…

Pathogenic variants of PMP22 cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 A (CMT1A) and hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP). As CMT1A is the most common inherited neuropathy and the most common pathogenic PMP22 variants are duplications and deletions, focused analysis of this gene remains relevant in the era of large gene panels and exome studies. We investigated the use and findings of PMP22 gene analyses carried out at Turku University Hospital (TUH; Turku, Finland) in 2005-2020. Using the electronic medical record system at TUH, we identified all patients who underwe

To date 45 autosomal recessive disease-causing variants are reported in the FKBP10 gene. Those variant were found to be associated with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) for which the hallmark phenotype is bone fractuers or Bruck Syndrome (BS) where bone fractures are accompanied with contractures. In addition, a specific homozygous FKBP10 mutation (p.Tyr293del) has been described in Yup'ik Inuit population to cause Kuskokwim syndrome (KS) in which contractures without fractures are observed. Here we present an extended Palestinian family with 10 affected individuals harboring a novel homozygous sp

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are common benign tumors. When they develop in proximity to peripheral nerves, they can cause neurologic symptoms secondary to mass effect. Previous reports have shown symptom resolution after removal of lipomas compressing various upper extremity peripheral nerves. However, brachial plexus lipomas are relatively rare. Our multidisciplinary experience with brachial plexus lipoma resection is reviewed in the largest case series to date.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all patients undergoing resection of brachial plexus lipomatous tumors between 2006 and 2016 was p

A 17-year-old man with no familial history developed motor and sensory disturbance of the left upper limb a few days after starting push-up exercise. Neurological examination revealed broad weakness and radial sensory disturbance of the left upper limb and magnetic resonance neurography showed laterality of brachial plexus intensity signals. Therefore, we suspected left brachial plexopathy. However, a nerve conduction study showed a broad disturbance that could not be explained by only brachial plexopathy. Genetic tests revealed a diagnosis of hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure p

Intraneural perineurioma is a neoplasm of perineurial cells, corresponding to WHO grade I. We present a case of intraneural perineurioma affecting multiple nerves, which usually involved one or two of major nerve trunks in one patient. We describe the clinical presentation, magnetic resonance (MR) neurography characteristics, and pathological characteristics. The differential diagnosis with other diseases, such as neurofibroma, Schwannomatosis and HNPP, will also be discussed. We also review the literature in efforts to highlight recent studies on intraneural perineurioma and heighten and awar

We report monozygotic twins, who presented with a clinical picture of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 (CMT1) with bilateral foot drop, pes cavus, thoracic kyphosis, and scoliosis. Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) showed up in one of them. Neurography showed demyelinating neuropathy, typical for CMT1, and transient conduction block in the ulnar nerve correlating with clinical ulnar palsy due to minor mechanical stress in only one of them. Genetic analysis revealed novel small de novo deletion c.407_418del12 in the PMP22 gene. Our patient shows the rarely report

BACKGROUND: Hecht and Beals in 1969 described an autosomal dominant syndrome characterised by severe restriction of mouth opening, camptodactyly, shortness of leg muscles and, as a direct consequence, foot deformities.
CASE REPORT: A case of a 4-year-old girl affected by this unusual syndrome is described. The patient underwent bilateral resection of coronoid processes by intraoral approach. An intraoral device was used in the immediate postoperative period in order to maintain mouth opening. Once at home, the patient has had, for six months, phisiokinesic therapy by means of a modified Darci

The Pena Shokeir phenotype (PSP) is characterised by multiple ankyloses, camptodactyly, facial dysmorphisms and lung hypoplasia with hydramnios. The basic neuromuscular defect leads, through a fetal hypokinesia-akinesia, to the development of this nonspecific phenotype and a respiratory insufficiency with early postnatal mortality. Severe central nervous anomalies are described in one-third of the reported cases. In this paper a foetus with PSP and 4 further foetuses with severe cerebral malformations and only discrete lung hypoplasia are described. It is not clear whether the cerebral malform
