Biomechanical properties of the glenohumeral joint capsule in hemiplegic shoulder pain.

BACKGROUND: Although many hemiplegic shoulder patients have been suffering from limited range of motion, it is not fully established whether the pathologic biomechanics are same in hemiplegic shoulder pain and adhesive capsulitis. Therefore we aimed to investigate biomechanical properties of glenohumeral joint capsules of hemiplegic shoulder pain with limited range of motions. METHODS: Participants were 14 patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain, 10 controls, and 42 adhesive capsulitis patients matched with the hemiplegic shoulder pain group for sex, age, and range of motion. Demographic data,

MRI of adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder: distension of the bursa in the superior subscapularis recess is a suggestive sign of the pathology.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic values of the superior subscapularis recess sign in patients with shoulder adhesive capsulitis. The sign consists in evaluating in MRI of the shoulder the presence of fluid distension of the bursa in the superior subscapularis recess. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated MRI of 165 shoulders in 48 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of shoulder adhesive capsulitis in the freezing phase (group I), in 49 short-wide superior cuff tear (group II) and in 65 controls (group III) between 2010 and 2013. On the T2 weighted images, we evaluated the presence of an

Treatment for insertional Achilles tendinopathy: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Systematically search and analyse the results of surgical and non-surgical treatments for insertional Achilles tendinopathy. METHODS: A structured systematic review of the literature was performed to identify surgical and non-surgical therapeutic studies reporting on ten or more adults with insertional Achilles tendinopathy. MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE (Classic) and the Cochrane database of controlled trials (1945-March 2011) were searched. The Coleman methodology score was used to assess the quality of included articles, and these were analysed with an emphasis on change in pain score,

Treatment for frozen shoulder combined with calcific tendinitis of the supraspinatus.

Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder is a process that involves calcium deposition in the rotator cuff tendons. It is usually a self-limiting process and is often chronic in nature. However, it can lead to acute pain resulting in frozen shoulder syndrome. We report 32 cases in which frozen shoulder was associated with calcific tendinitis of the supraspinatus. The aim of this study was to use arthroscopic brisement of the glenohumeral joint and make multiple punctures in the calcific spot to treat the frozen shoulder associated with calcific tendinitis of the supraspinatus. In our study, 30 pati

The heel in sport.

The various causes of posterior and inferior heel pain in the athlete have been presented. Various examples of athletes who have had the various problems and discussed their outcome have been discussed. This article primarily has tried to educate the reader as to the different types of heel pain and has stressed the need for conservative care. Ninety-five percent of patients who have inferior heel pain will recover with appropriate conservative care. Therefore, surgery should be done only after conservative care has been exhausted and adequate time has passed.

Arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder. A general appraisal.

Arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder was performed on 439 patients over a 10-year period: these patients are reviewed after a minimum follow-up of one year. Diagnostic arthroscopy is known to be valuable and we have found that arthroscopic surgery also is safe and effective. It was useful in treating frozen shoulder, early osteoarthritis, isolated tears of the glenoid labrum and lesions of the biceps tendon. It was less useful in treating partial tears of the rotator cuff, tendonitis and severe osteoarthritis, and of little value in treating complete tears of the rotator cuff or in treating pa

The Effects of Radiation Treatment in Breast Cancer Patients on the Subsequent Development of Adhesive Capsulitis.

BACKGROUND: Adhesive capsulitis (AC) is a disabling condition associated with shoulder pain and restricted range of motion. Although breast cancer treatment has been linked to increased AC risk, the independent contribution of radiation therapy remains unclear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed using the PearlDiver MARINER database (2014-2023). Female patients with a primary diagnosis of breast cancer and ≥ 2 years of follow-up were included. Patients with prior shoulder pathology were excluded. Cohorts were stratified by radiation exposure and surgical treatmen

Effect of Eccentric Control Exercises on Patients with Frozen Shoulder and Mild to Moderate Disability: A Single-Group Pre-Post Study.

BACKGROUND: Frozen shoulder (FS) is a common musculoskeletal condition characterized by inflammatory contracture of the glenohumeral joint capsule, leading to restricted active and passive range of motion, particularly in external rotation. Eccentric control exercises have demonstrated effectiveness in managing various upper limb disorders, including subacromial impingement, tennis elbow, and rotator cuff tendinopathy. However, there is limited evidence on their efficacy in individuals with frozen shoulder. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of eccentric control exercises on pain, functi

MicroRNA-26a deficiency attenuates the severity of frozen shoulder in a mouse immobilization model.

The main pathogenesis of the frozen shoulder is thought to be the inflammation of the intra-articular synovium and subsequent fibrosis of the shoulder joint capsule. However, the molecular pathogenesis of the frozen shoulder is still unknown. A class of noncoding RNAs, microRNAs contribute to various diseases including musculoskeletal diseases. MicroRNA-26a (miR-26a) has been reported to be associated with fibrosis in several organs. This study aims to reveal the role of miR-26a on fibrosis in the shoulder capsule using a frozen shoulder model in miR-26a deficient (miR-26a KO) mice. MiR-26a KO

Acute myopericarditis and left shoulder capsulitis following second dose of mRNA SARS-CoV-2 Moderna vaccination.

Vaccination against mRNA SARS-CoV-2 has been administered on a very large scale and various side effects have been described. The increased risk of myopericarditis is known, and only a few cases of shoulder capsulitis have been reported after vaccination. These two pathologies have never been reported in the same patient after vaccination. Our article presents the history of a man in his 40s who presented with myopericarditis a few days after vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 with mRNA(Messenger RNA) Moderna® vaccine and who at the same time developed shoulder capsulitis. His cardiovascular sympt

Is the Anterior Injection Approach Without Ultrasound Guidance Superior to the Posterior Approach for Adhesive Capsulitis of the Shoulder? A Sequential, Prospective Trial.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder injections for conditions such as adhesive capsulitis are commonly performed and can be administered through image-based or landmark-based injection approaches. Ultrasound-guided injections are widely used and accurate because ultrasound allows real-time visualization of the needle and injected contrast. Landmark-based injections would be advantageous, if they were accurate, because they would save the time and expense associated with ultrasound. However, few prospective studies have compared well-described landmark-based shoulder injection techniques without ultrasound.

Health, behaviour and growth performance of Charolais and Limousin bulls fattened on different types of flooring.

Intensive fattening of late-maturing breeds on concrete or rubberized slatted floors is the prevalent beef production system in mainland Eur … locomotor disorders were reduced by RCS only for LIM, while RCS tended to prevent the occurrence of bursitis for both breeds. During two 8-h behavioural observations, bulls on RCS performed more head butt/displacements and chases than on CS, and they reduced the frequency of abnormal lying down events. The use of RCS increased mounts' frequency only in LIM …

A Prospective Evaluation of Early Postoperative Complications After Distal Biceps Tendon Repairs.

PURPOSE: The reported incidence of postoperative complications after distal biceps tendon repairs (DBTRs) has been determined largely by retrospective studies. We hypothesized that a large prospective cohort study of DBTRs would demonstrate increased complication rates relative to existing literature values. Secondarily, we hypothesized that most complications would be transient and self-limiting, regardless of the surgical technique employed for the repair. METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing acute, primary DBTR from July 2016 to December 2017 were enrolled. The repair technique, postop

Focal uptake at the rotator interval or inferior capsule of shoulder on 18F-FDG PET/CT is associated with adhesive capsulitis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if focal increased uptake at the rotator interval (RI) and/or inferior capsule (IC) on18F-FDG PET/CT ("positive PET") predicts the presence of adhesive capsulitis (AC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three populations were retrospectively examined. Group 1 included 1,137 consecutive 18F-FDG PET/CT studies and was used to determine the prevalence of focal uptake at the RI or IC. Group 2 included 361 cases from a 10-year period with 18F-FDG PET/CT and MRI of shoulder performed within 45 days of each other and was used to enrich the study group. Group 3 included 109 randomly sele
