The outcome of injured cervical spinal cord with uncontrolled swelling under duraplasty: protocol of the ISCUD randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cervical traumatic spinal cord injuries (TSCIs) are the most prevalent type of traumatic spinal cord injury, marked by high disability rates, considerable medical expenses, and a poor prognosis for functional recovery. The clinical effectiveness of bony decompression in improving functional outcomes following TSCI remains limited, even when performed ultra-early (within 12 or 8 h), emphasizing the uncertainty and insufficient understanding of the extent of adequate decompression. The ISCUD trial aims (1) to evaluate the benefits and risks of combining expansive duroplasty with stan

The effectiveness of a 3-dimensional printed vaginal dilator in mitigating radiation-induced vaginal stenosis for patients with cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Vaginal stenosis (VS) is a common adverse effect of pelvic radiotherapy. Current guidelines recommend vaginal dilation to maintain tissue elasticity and prevent VS. Previously, patients were instructed to self-dilate using own fingers. The current study assessed the effectiveness of using a 3-dimensional (3D) printed vaginal dilator (VD) for mitigating vaginal narrowing and shortening in cervical cancer patients within 1 year after radiotherapy. METHODS: VDs were developed and validated by radiation therapists using a 3D printer. We enrolled 67 female patients diagnosed with cervic

Risk Factors of Extended Hospital Stay After One-Level Anterior Cervical Discectomy Fusion or Disc Replacement: Results from 1004 Patients in Food and Drug Administration Trials.

BACKGROUND: Extended length of stay (LOS) after surgery is costly to the health care system and can be distressing to the patient and family. Previous studies have shown conflicting data on factors associated with increased LOS and are limited by using multiple different surgeries. Our study seeks to analyze factors that are associated with extended LOS. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyze data from 2 Food and Drug Administration trials of one-level cervical surgery to identify risk factors that are associated with extended LOS in the hospital. METHODS: Extended LOS was def

Anatomic considerations in headaches associated with cervical sagittal imbalance: A cadaveric biomechanical study.

Chronic Forward Head Posture is associated with headaches, neck pain, and disability, though few studies have investigated the effects it has on the suboccipital triangle. The objective of this study was to quantitatively assess whether the biomechanical changes in the suboccipital triangle help explain the clinical manifestations of Forward Head Posture. Specifically, this study aimed to identify whether the Greater Occipital Nerve or C2 nerve root may be compressed in Forward Head Posture. Three-dimensional, specimen-specific computer models were rendered from thirteen cadaveric cervical spi

Modifiable risk factors associated with clearance of type-specific cervical human papillomavirus infections in a cohort of university students.

BACKGROUND: Previous findings regarding risk factors for human papillomavirus (HPV) persistence, other than viral determinants, identified from prospective cohort studies have been inconsistent in part because study designs have differed with respect to differing HPV detection methods and varying lengths of follow-up time. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to continue the search for epidemiologic risk factors of persistent cervical HPV infections and determine what behaviors differed between those women with transient HPV infections and those women who cannot clear their type-specif

A Retrospective Analysis of Superficial Cervical Plexus Blockade for Children Undergoing Otologic Surgery.

Superficial cervical plexus blocks (SCPB) are well documented for anterior and lateral neck surgeries in adults. Their role in the pediatric population is less clear. Our objective was to determine whether superficial cervical plexus blockade reduced postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in children undergoing otologic surgery. This single-center retrospective cohort study evaluated patients aged 1-18 years old undergoing cochlear implantation, tympanomastoidectomy, tympanoplasty, or myringoplasty via a postauricular incision over a 27-month period. Patients undergoing bilateral surgery, co

Cancer cell detection by a heart-shaped dual-core photonic crystal fiber sensor.

This paper contributes a novel design of sensor with a heart-shaped dual-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) to detect cancerous cells in human cervical, blood, adrenal glands, and breast. Cancer-infected cells and their normal cells are considered in liquid form having their own refractive indices. In the designed PCF, the two heart-shaped cores separated by a large circular air hole serve as two independent waveguides. The large circular air hole is infiltrated by sample cells from different body parts. Detection of cancer-contaminated cells by the proposed PCF is based on the mode-coupling th
