Comparison of individuals affected by chromosomal aneuploidies with controls has already confirmed the differential action of X and Y chromosomes during dental ontogeny. Permanent enamel and dentin structures are formed during the development of the dentition and these reflect the combined effects of both genetic and environmental factors during the prenatal and early postnatal period. It can provide key information on the effect of developmental assaults such as chromosomal aneuploidy as it is not subject to subsequent resorption or remodelling like other skeletal structures within the body.

INTRODUCTION: Monorchidism is a rarely described condition in the horse and is not to be confused with cryptorchidism. The diagnosis is challenging and confirmed by surgery and histology in combination with hormonal assays. This report describes, to the best of the author's knowledge, the first case of monorchidism and abdominal cryptorchidism of the developed testicle in a horse.
METHODS: An Irish Cob underwent laparoscopic castration for removal of bilateral cryptorchid testicles. At surgery, the horse was diagnosed as a monorchid with the testicle retained intra-abdominally. Histopathologi

Vertebrate sexual dimorphism is ascribed to the presence of testes or ovaries, and, hence, to the secretion of gonad-specific hormones. However, mounting evidence indicates that sex differences in tissues and organs also stem from the presence of sex chromosomes (XX or XY). To tease out the contribution of gonads from sex chromosomes to the musculoskeletal system, we used the Four-Core Genotypes (FCG) mouse model, in which the Sry gene, which dictates testis formation, was either deleted from the Y chromosome, resulting in XY mice with ovaries (XY-SryO), or overexpressed in XX mice, resulting

BACKGROUND: The chromosome characteristics of the butterfly Bicyclus anynana, have received little attention, despite the scientific importance of this species. This study presents the characterization of chromosomes in this species by means of cytogenetic analysis and linkage mapping.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Physical genomic features in the butterfly B. anynana were examined by karyotype analysis and construction of a linkage map. Lepidoptera possess a female heterogametic W-Z sex chromosome system. The WZ-bivalent in pachytene oocytes of B. anynana consists of an abnormally small, h

BACKGROUND: Maternal serum triple marker screening (alpha-fetoprotein, human chorionic gonadotropin, and unconjugated estriol) can detect 60-70% of Down syndrome and 60% of Edwards syndrome. Previous studies have reported that positive serum screening is related to other fetal chromosomal abnormalities, pregnancy complications, and adverse outcomes. We determined the incidence and karyotype of chromosomal abnormalities in screen positive women and evaluated a relationship between chromosomal and ultrasonographic abnormalities.
METHODS: Of the 49,806 pregnant women between 15 and 23 weeks' ges

Human Y chromosome evolution has progressively been directed towards a role in sex determination and reproduction. Cytogenetically visible structural abnormalities have determined long arm chromosomal regions which define the AZF factor that contains genes implicated in the spermatogenic process. By using molecular tools, the AZF factor has been subdivided into three loci, AZFa, b and c, the deletion of which leads to specific spermatogenesis impairments due to the loss of particular genes. Most AZF genes are specifically expressed in testis but their functions are far to be known precisely. P

Cytogenetical study ofcolorectal polyps of different histological structures from 54 patients has been carried out. Domination of diploid karyotypes was shown. Abnormal karyotypes were found in 17 (31,5%) polyps: the most frequent anomalies were in adenoma while in hamartomatous polyps they were absent. The typical features of the karyotypes were numeric changes, such as additional copies of chromosomes 13, 7, 20, 18, 16 in some combinations. The polyps with high-grade dysplasia in all cases had abnormal karyotypes. Combinations of additional copies of chromosomes 13, 18, and 20 were observed

In order to assess the frequency of chromosomal abnormalities in azoospermic males from western Mexico, we carried out a retrospective study in 227 patients. Forty-three (18.9%) cases with an abnormal karyotype were found. The most frequent chromosomal anomaly was 47,XXY, which was identified in 35 subjects (15.4%). In six cases (2.6%), structural aberrations were detected: two Robertsonian translocations [(45,XY,t(13;22)(p11;p11) and (45,XY,t(13;15)(p11;p11)], a Y;autosome translocation [46,XY,der(15)t(Y;15)(q12;p11)], and three mosaics [mos45,X/46,X,idic(Y)(q11)]. In general, these findings

The sister chromatid cohesion apparatus mediates physical pairing of duplicated chromosomes. This pairing is essential for appropriate distribution of chromosomes into the daughter cells upon cell division. Recent evidence shows that the cohesion apparatus, which is a significant structural component of chromosomes during interphase, also affects gene expression and development. The Cornelia de Lange (CdLS) and Roberts/SC phocomelia (RBS/SC) genetic syndromes in humans are caused by mutations affecting components of the cohesion apparatus. Studies in Drosophila suggest that effects on gene exp

The occurrence of clonal chromosome aberrations in short-term cultures from synovia, osteophytes, and cartilage from patients with osteoarthritis (OA) was recently reported. Among these aberrations, a recurrent involvement of chromosome bands 12q13-15 in structural rearrangements was detected in both synovia and osteophytes. Chromosomal abnormalities of 12q13-15 are frequent among malignant and benign mesenchymal tumors, and it was recently demonstrated that the molecular target in these neoplasms is the HMGIC gene. In this study, we show by fluorescence in situ hybridization that HMGIC was di

Mitotic chromosomes from individuals of a Pyrenean hybrid zone between two subspecies of the grasshopper Chorthippus parallelus have been pretreated as for C-banding and subsequently stained with 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and (or) Chromomycin A3 (CMA). The results, which are different from those obtained with Giemsa C-banding or standard DAPI - CMA treatments show (i) hidden heterochromatic heterogeneity that may be correlated with the existence of distinct families of repetitive DNAs, (ii) information about the possible independent origin of the three detected types of heterochromat

80 morpho-physiological traits were studied in a group of 55 men with morphologically identical subtotal deletion of Y chromosome heterochromatin and in a control group of 55 men with normal Y chromosome. No significant differences in mean values of most traits were found between these groups, except for some haematological parameters. With the help of the pattern recognition algorithm, 20 features were extracted which classify the two groups of individuals compared, the recognition error being 4.6%. Electrocardiographic parameters (25% of total traits), some haematological, anthropometric tra

Cytogenetic studies were done in lymph node and peripheral leukemic cells from sixteen patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma with peripheral T-cell type. Ten patients were positive for human T-cell leukemia virus I (HTLV-I) proviral DNA in tumour cells and six were negative. The former group had a higher tendency for leukemic conversion and poorer prognosis than the latter. However, no definite difference on the numerical and structural chromosomal abnormalities between these two groups was found. The most frequent chromosome abnormalities: 14p+, 14q+ and No. 6 abnormalities were detected in both

A group of 23 male heavy drinkers was studied cytogenetically, and the results were compared with those obtained from a control group of 50 non-drinkers. The data are based on karyological analysis of dividing lymphocytes in 72-hr blood cultures. Alcoholics revealed a significantly higher frequency of numerical and structural chromosomal aberrations. Chromosome rearrangements were observed only among alcoholics. The most frequent exchange type was dicentrics (0.02 per cell, constituting 65.1% of the total exchanges), followed by reciprocal translocations (0.005 per cell), and pericentric inver

Two maternal male cousins in a Jewish Iraqi kindred were affected with dyskeratosis congenita and had a megaloblastic bone marrow. One cousin had pancytopenia and the other had thrombocytopenia. The kindred displays a deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and a beta-thalassemia trait. The following genetic "markers" of the X chromosome were studied: G6PD, the X-linked blood groups Xg, and color vision. Linkage analysis indicated that dyskeratosis, G6PD, and Xg are far apart on the X chromosome. Chromosomal studies showed a 46XY karyotype in both cases; however, nonspecific num

The chromosomes of leucocytes cultured from the peripheral blood of 49 primitive Yanomama Indians of Venezuela were studied to determine the types and frequencies of aberrations in a human population not exposed to the same exogenous agents as civilized man. In all but one instance, 100 cells per individual were scored. In 13 cases, we found one or more cells with multiple complex breaks and rearrangements, represented by tetracentric, tricentric, and numerous dicentric chromosomes. From the standpoint of chromosomal damage, these cells are among the most abnormal cells yet described in vivo i

Five cases of congenital clubfoot diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound are reported. The incidence of clubfoot may be higher within an affected family and may be associated with other structural anomalies or chromosomal abnormalities. Identifying a clubfoot in utero should therefore alert the sonographer that other anomalies may be present and should lead to a detailed structural survey.

BACKGROUND: Hunter syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis type II) is a recessive X-linked disorder due to mutations in the iduronate 2-sulfatase (IDS) gene. The IDS gene encodes a lysosomal enzyme, iduronate 2-sulfatase. The disease occurs almost exclusively in males. However, in the literature, 12 cases of the disease in females are known due to structural anomalies, a non-random chromosome X inactivation or chromosome X monosomy. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate a rare case of Hunter syndrome in a girl caused by a mutation in the IDS gene inherited from the mother and the presence of
