The palliative treatment of esophageal carcinoma has included intubation, bypass, dilation, irradiation, and esophagogastrectomy. The last has been criticized by some on the basis of high operative morbidity and mortality. To assess the success of this method at our institution, we reviewed the 60 consecutive resections performed for carcinoma of the esophagus from January, 1972, through June, 1983. BACKGROUND: Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare disease that almost exclusively affects women of reproductive age. Patients are warned of the increased risks if they become pregnant. However, information on pregnancy in patients after the diagnosis of LAM is limited.
METHODS: Patients were collected from the LAM registry study at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Beijing, China. Patients with a history of pregnancy after the diagnosis of LAM were included. Medical records were reviewed, and baseline information and data during and after pregnancy were collected in May 2018.

We report a rare case of ergotamine-associated mitral stenosis in a 55-year-old woman who presented with recurrent chylous pleural effusion. Echocardiographic, gross, and microscopic features of the mitral valve were consistent with chronic ergotamine-induced valvulopathy. We conclude that medication-induced valvulopathy should be included in the differential diagnosis of valvular heart disease. In addition, cardiac function should be monitored before and during long-term therapy with ergotamine or ergotamine-derived dopamine agonists.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the work is to evaluate acceptable mortality and morbidity associated with the esophageal resections for carcinoma.
METHOD: The work analyses the data of patients with esophageal cancer from the Czech National Cancer Registry and it compares personal experience with complications and risks associated with the esophagectomy for carcinoma with the data from specialized literature published in recent years.
RESULTS: Despite improvements in the surgical technique and the perioperative intensive care, the esophagectomy maintains a relatively high morbidity and mortality.
