Changing particle content of the modern desert dust storm: a climate × health problem.

Climate and land use changes together are altering the particle content of desert dust storms on regional and local scales. These storms now carry a wide variety of pollutants and pathogens arising from urbanization, industrialization, mass transportation, warfare, or aerosolized waste in locations worldwide where deserts are intertwined with built infrastructure, transportation centers, and high-density human habitation. Accordingly, the modern desert dust storm has an anthropogenic particle load which presumably sets it apart from pre-industrial dust storms. Evidence for how particle content

Integrating morphometric and climatic variables into the mapping of land use and vegetation cover in the Caatinga biome.

Recent landscape transformations resulting from the replacement of natural areas with anthropogenic uses have had an impact on the semi-arid region of Brazil. The objective of the research was to evaluate a land use and land cover classification model in the Caatinga biome, using machine learning techniques integrated with multiple environmental and climatic covariates. The area was segmented into six subunits, based on a combination of hydrographic regions and geomorphological domains. The random forest algorithm on the Google Earth Engine platform was used to process the supervised classific

Mapping the potential suitable habitats for Hyalomma rufipes (Acari: Ixodidae) in Africa and Western Eurasia.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever is a broadly distributed tick-borne disease and is caused by the arthropod-borne Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). Hyalomma ticks have been associated with the circulation of the virus in natural foci and in laboratory experiments. One of the main species, Hyalomma rufipes, is originally distributed in Africa. However, anthropogenic activities, bird migration, and domestic animal movement, could break the natural barriers that prevent its spread out of its natural area of colonization. This study explored the potential suitable areas for H. rufipes

Estimates of parameters for formaldehyde emission model from plywood panel under various temperature and relative humidity conditions.

The initial emittable concentration, Cm,0, the material phase diffusion coefficient, Dm, and the air/material partition coefficient, K, are the key parameters used to predict the formaldehyde emissions from indoor building materials. This work presents formaldehyde emission experiments of plywood panels in a climatic chamber under various environmental conditions, which provides information on how relative humidity, temperature, and loading degree affect the formaldehyde emission. The experimental results showed that formaldehyde concentration in the climatic chamber increased rapidly during t

Impact of biodiversity and seasonality on Lyme-pathogen transmission.

Lyme disease imposes increasing global public health challenges. To better understand the joint effects of seasonal temperature variation and host community composition on the pathogen transmission, a stage-structured periodic model is proposed by integrating seasonal tick development and activity, multiple host species and complex pathogen transmission routes between ticks and reservoirs. Two thresholds, one for tick population dynamics and the other for Lyme-pathogen transmission dynamics, are identified and shown to fully classify the long-term outcomes of the tick invasion and disease pers

Job preferences of operating room nurses: A discrete choice experiment.

BACKGROUND: The global nursing shortage is particularly acute in operating rooms, where staffing deficits can compromise surgical efficiency and patient safety. Although previous studies have identified factors associated with nurse retention, quantitative evidence on how operating room nurses value and trade off different job attributes remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the job preferences of operating room nurses and examine the relative importance of different job attributes. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study utilising a discrete choice experiment. SETTING(S): Four public tertiary ho

AI-driven talent management and organizational psychology: A structural model of talent pool effectiveness.

This cross-sectional study examines associations among HR technology adoption (HRTA), an AI-supportive organizational psychological climate (OPF), employees' AI-driven psychological adoption (AIPA), and perceived talent pool management effectiveness (TPME). The archived analysis used covariance-based structural equation modeling with 184 respondents. To address conceptual ambiguity in the prior version, AIPA is defined consistently as employees' psychological acceptance of AI-enabled HR systems, reflected in trust, perceived fairness, and willingness to use such systems; OPF is treated as a pr

Revealing sources for synergistic control of PM2.5, O3, and CO2 in China: Based on social costs of air pollution and climate impact.

China is concurrently facing the dual challenges of air pollution and climate change. Here, we established a coupled modeling framework that integrated a chemical transport model with a health impact assessment model and the human capital method, to quantify the contributions of 150 emission sources (five sectors in 30 provinces) to the CO2 emissions, and the mortality burdens attributed to O3 and PM2.5. We found that, in 2019, the estimated premature deaths in China attributed to PM2.5 and O3 pollution were 1,499,073 and 143,420, respectively. The social cost of air pollution was approximatel

The impact of natural environment on human alveolar echinococcosis: A township-level modeling study in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Human alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a lethal helminthic infection caused by the tapeworms Echinococcus multilocularis. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has the greatest endemicity of human AE globally, but the natural risk factors and its impact mechanism are still unclear. Generalized linear models and generalized additive models are used to select key linear and non-linear environmental factors associated with cases of AE. The interactive effect between different factors is identified using concurvity test. From fifty-nine variables analyzed, four key factors and one interaction term were identif

Using soil survey data to model potential Coccidioides soil habitat and inform Valley fever epidemiology.

Coccidioidomycosis, also known as Valley fever, is a disease that can result in substantial illness and death. It is most common in the southwestern United States and areas of Latin America with arid climates, though reports increasingly suggest its range is wider than previously recognized. The natural habitat of the causative organisms, Coccidioides spp., have been associated with certain soil properties and climatic conditions. Current understanding of its geographic range is primarily defined by skin test studies and outbreak locations. We developed a fuzzy system model to predict suitable

Assessment of the potential establishment of Lyme endemic cycles in Mexico.

Although Lyme disease is currently classified as exotic in Mexico, recent studies have suggested that it might be endemic there. We assessed the potential risk for the establishment of Borrelia burgdorferi transmission in Mexico. To identify the potential routes of B. burgdorferi spread, Complex Inference Networks were used initially to identify potential vector-host interactions between hard ticks (Ixodes) and migratory birds in the U.S., and a model for predicting the most important potential bird hosts of hard ticks was then obtained. By using network metrics, keystone-vectors were identifi

Effect of temperature and its interaction with other meteorological factors on bacillary dysentery in Jilin Province, China.

Bacterial dysentery (BD) brings a major disease burden to developing countries. Exploring the influence of temperature and its interaction with other meteorological factors on BD is significant for the prevention and early warning of BD in the context of climate change. Daily BD cases and meteorological data from 2008 to 2018 were collected in all nine prefecture-level cities in Jilin Province. A one-stage province-level model and a two-stage city-specific multivariate meta-pooled level distributed lag non-linear model were established to explore the correlation between temperature and BD, the

Ecological niche modelling for predicting the risk of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Neotropical moist forest biome.

A major challenge of eco-epidemiology is to determine which factors promote the transmission of infectious diseases and to establish risk maps that can be used by public health authorities. The geographic predictions resulting from ecological niche modelling have been widely used for modelling the future dispersion of vectors based on the occurrence records and the potential prevalence of the disease. The establishment of risk maps for disease systems with complex cycles such as cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) can be very challenging due to the many inference networks between large sets of host a

Modelling of the distribution of Biomphalaria glabrata and Biomphalaria straminea in the metropolitan region of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.

The occurrence of schistosomiasis is directly linked to the presence of its snail intermediate host Biomphalaria spp. Knowledge of geographical distribution, habitats and behaviour of these snails in relation to the climate is essential for guiding measures for disease prevention and control. This study aims to model the distribution of B. glabrata and B. straminea in schistosomiasis non-endemic areas of the metropolitan region of Recife (MRR) based on environmental data and estimates of snail distributions in endemic and neighbouring areas. We applied Kriging with the aim of determining the s

Delimitation of kala-azar risk areas in the district of Vaishali in Bihar (India) using a geo-environmental approach.

Remote sensing and geographical information technologies were used to discriminate areas of high and low risk for contracting kala-azar or visceral leishmaniasis. Satellite data were digitally processed to generate maps of land cover and spectral indices, such as the normalised difference vegetation index and wetness index. To map estimated vector abundance and indoor climate data, local polynomial interpolations were used based on the weightage values. Attribute layers were prepared based on illiteracy and the unemployed proportion of the population and associated with village boundaries. Pea

Knowledge and preventive practices associated with anticipatory action for climate-related cholera outbreaks in Mozambique: a gender perspective.

Background: Cholera remains a major public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa, exacerbated by extreme climatic events and inadequate WASH-related practices. As both climate change impacts and WASH practices are gender-sensitive, this study adopts a gendered perspective to examine the relationship between anticipatory action (AA) for climate-induced cholera outbreaks and knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) in Zambézia Province, Mozambique. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Quelimane (urban) and Mopeia (rural) using a multistage sampling design. A total of 448 respondents

Temperature and CO2 Interactions Reshape Hemileia vastatrix Urediniospore Germination In Vitro.

Climate change is expected to heighten the risk of epidemics and outbreaks of coffee leaf rust (CLR), caused by the obligate parasite Hemileia vastatrix, as reported in the literature. While knowledge is available on rising temperatures' effects on CLR epidemiological processes, fewer studies have explored combined temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) impacts, with contrasting findings on CLR incidence and severity. CLR epidemics are multifactorial, and controlled-condition experiments targeting individual components help anticipate pathogen behavior under future climates. Uredinio

Residence times of English estuaries.

The residence time of estuaries is a fundamental indicator of biogeochemical cycling, ecological productivity, pollution, and human health risk. Residence times of UK estuaries are estimated to vary from days to weeks, depending on tidal and riverine variability, as well as estuary size and shape; yet are largely unquantified for present-day and future climate conditions. This study presents the first national-scale modelling assessment of residence times across 52 English estuaries, using a consistent framework of high-resolution bathymetry and hydrodynamic modelling (Delft3D-FM). Simulations
