The efficiency paradox of discharge masking head loss in run-of-river hydropower generation.

While climate impacts on hydropower output are well-documented, plant efficiency, the critical ratio of electrical energy generated to hydraulic energy input, remains an underexplored metric, particularly in data-limited regions. This study analyzes the efficiency dynamics of the Ruzizi I plant (29.8 MW) from 2000 to 2023 to unravel the interplay between hydrological drivers and operational constraints. Building on the established context of a hydraulic trade-off between water volume and head, we employed machine learning (Multiple Linear Regression, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting) and opera

Hierarchical YOLO-SAM: A Scalable Pipeline for Automated Segmentation and Morphometric Tracking of Coral Recruits in Time-Series Microscopy.

Coral reef ecosystems are declining rapidly due to climate change, disease, and anthropogenic stressors, driving the expansion of land-based coral propagation for reef restoration. A major bottleneck in these efforts is the manual measurement of coral recruit tissue area from microscopy images, which requires 2-7 min per image and limits scalability. We present a hierarchical deep learning pipeline that automates this measurement by integrating YOLO-based detection with Segment Anything Model (SAM) segmentation. YOLO localizes recruits and classifies them by developmental stage; stage-specific

Male-Biased Dispersal Leads to Expansion After Decline: The Hokkaido Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) Population Rebounds Post-Last Glacial Period.

Sex-biased dispersal potentially underpins the genetic structural mismatch in genetic structure between differently inherited genetic loci, but accurately evaluating the effect of sex-biased dispersal is challenging due to other sex-biased traits and limitations in usable data. Brown bears exhibit extreme male-biased dispersal, with significant genetic differences between maternally and paternally inherited loci. This study aims to investigate how the characteristic genetic structure in Hokkaido, Japan has been shaped and to evaluate the influence of male-biased dispersal and environmental bar

Patterns of Evolutionary Diversification in a World-Significant Hotspot of Salmonid Diversity: A Study of Landlocked Salvelinus Fish of the Kronotskoe-Uzon Area, Kamchatka.

Freshwater fish are prone to forming polymorphisms beneficial for resource partitioning and rapid adaptation. Genetically distinct ecomorphs emerge in a mosaic, forming local centers of biodiversity. The mechanisms behind this process are of particular interest, as they facilitate the study of speciation. Here we examine the patterns of evolution in the endemic charrs (genus Salvelinus) that populate the Kronotskoe-Uzon drainage system. This is one of the most phenotypically diverse and complicated assemblages of salmonids on Earth. By analyzing SNPs in SLAF sequences of 107 specimens covering

Phylogenomic evidence provides insights into the phylogeny and speciation patterns in the subgenus Caloscordum (Allium, Amaryllidaceae).

Phylogenomics with abundant informative sites offers a powerful means for elucidating complex diversification history. Here, we collected 22 samples from 18 populations representing all species of subgenus Caloscordum (Allium). Using transcriptome and whole-genome resequencing data, we generated 1755 low-copy nuclear genes and 81 plastid genes. By integrating morphological and phylogenomic evidence, we clarified the subgenus's complex evolutionary histories and speciation patterns. A total of 18 morphological characteristics were analysed, with a taxonomic framework established. Our analyses r

Impact of macroalgae farming on the carbonate system and biogenic sulfur dynamics in Sansha Bay, China.

Macroalgae aquaculture plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration and mitigating coastal eutrophication, yet its impacts on carbon and sulfur cycling during the harvesting process is still poorly understood. Here, the effects of the harvesting on the carbonate system and biogenic sulfur release were examined in November, corresponding to the Laminaria japonica - Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis rotational aquaculture zones in Sansha Bay, China, in 2022. Our findings indicate that the significant release of dissolved organic carbon after harvesting occurred alongside the remineralization of organ

Thaw-window mismatch in soil organic-pollutant fate under freeze-thaw cycles: redistribution, boundary-export risk, and adaptive control.

Climate warming may intensify freeze-thaw disturbance in cold-region and seasonally frozen soils, which have long been regarded as relatively stable reservoirs for organic pollutants but can undergo episodic remobilization during thaw. However, freeze-thaw effects are still often evaluated through concentration changes or inventory shifts, whereas the short thaw window during which transport activation may precede attenuation recovery remains insufficiently resolved. This Review develops a thaw-window mismatch framework to examine the non-steady-state fate of soil organic pollutants under free

Ocean acidification induces neuronal hyperexcitation and anxiety-like behaviour in marine medaka via ASIC activation.

Ocean acidification presents a significant threat to marine life, yet its neurobiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study examined how acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) mediate neuronal excitability and anxiety-like behaviour in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) under elevated CO2 concentrations (1000 and 1900 ppm). Transcriptomics revealed early upregulation of asic1a (4 days), while RT-qPCR demonstrated increased asic1a, asic1b, asic2 and asic4a (7 days), with only asic1a sustained at 30 days. Immunofluorescence confirmed heightened Asic2 in emotion-processing brain regions

Repositioning of indigenous breeds in the pivot of climate crisis, food assurance, and biosecurity: genetic archive and evolutionary dynamics.

This study advocates for the strategic repositioning of local animal genetic resources, re-evaluating them not merely as remnants of cultural heritage but as critical biological archives essential for ensuring future food security. The contemporary livestock sector is navigating a precarious transition as global production systems encounter an ecosystem based bottleneck induced by decades of intensive monoculture. By contrasting the physiological and genetic characteristics of high yield industrial breeds with the inherent resilience of local genotypes, the research highlights a fundamental tr

Multifunctional Radiative Cooling Geopolymer for Energy Saving in Buildings.

The construction industry, driven by the growing energy demands for heating, cooling, and lighting, accounts for nearly 40% of global energy consumption. It heavily relies on traditional materials such as Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), whose production is energy-intensive and accounts for approximately 8% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This study presents a multifunctional radiative cooling geopolymer (MRCG) as a promising and sustainable building material designed to address the aforementioned challenges. Prepared via an environmentally benign process, MRCG integrates thermal insu

Atmospheric reaction of methanethiol with hydroxyl radicals and chlorine atoms: implications for the atmospheric sulfur cycle and HONO formation.

Despite the importance of the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds in the biogeochemical sulfur cycle and climate, the mechanism of the transformation of methanethiol (CH3SH), the second highest gas-phase marine sulfur emission besides dimethyl sulfide, remains weakly explored. This work presents an investigation of the reaction of CH3SH with hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and chlorine atoms (Cl˙) using the DLPNO-CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//M06-2X/aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z method, both in the absence and presence of water. The results indicate that the hydrogen abstraction by ˙OH/Cl˙ from the -SH group is more favor

Methanotrophs and co-occurring microbial taxa: Genomic potential for carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles in newly formed high-altitude proglacial lakes.

The extreme and fragile environments of high-altitude proglacial lakes shape unique microbial communities and metabolic networks, serving as active interfaces in the biogeochemical cycles of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S). However, the metabolic processes underlying microbially driven biogeochemical cycling in these lakes remain poorly understood. In this study, by integrating field investigations and isotopic analyses across multiple seasons, we observed geochemical and genomic evidence consistent with significant microbial methane (CH4) oxidation in the surface sediments of cryo-ol

Artificial intelligence at the frontlines: Emerging infectious and parasitic diseases in the digital era.

Emerging infectious diseases are one of the most significant threats to global health, driven by many factors such as zoonotic spillovers, climate change, globalization, and antibiotic resistance. While a great deal of attention is focused on viral and bacterial pathogens (e.g., SARS-CoV-2, influenza, multidrug-resistant TB), parasitic diseases contribute to global morbidity and mortality that remain largely unrecognized. The recent development of artificial intelligence has introduced powerful computational tools that can integrate large and complex datasets to assist with infectious disease

Evaluation of Larvicidal Potential of Nepeta cataria and Cymbopogon nardus Essential Oils Against Aedes aegypti.

Mosquito-borne diseases remain one of the greatest challenges to global public health, with Aedes aegypti (A. aegypti) serving as a primary vector of arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika. Reliance on synthetic insecticides for larval control has contributed to ecological concerns, human health risks, and the emergence of resistance in mosquito populations. These issues highlight the urgent need for safer, sustainable, and environmentally compatible alternatives. The present study investigated the larvicidal efficacy of essential oils extracted from locally grown plan

Photoselective isotope fractionation dynamics of N2 with cosmo and atmospheric chemistry perspectives.

Stable isotope ratio measurements provide valuable insights into a broad range of natural processes, from planetary atmospheres and climate to interstellar chemistry. Nitrogen, which has two stable isotopes, exhibits varying isotope ratios across the solar system. To model these observations, the isotope fraction as a function of energy is essential. At the Advanced Light Source (ALS), we measured the photodissociation of molecular nitrogen (N2) with vacuum UV photons where a single photon is sufficiently energetic to dissociate the strong bond. The nitrogen atoms produced are scavenged with H

Mobility of biochar colloids from diverse feedstocks: Dominant control of zeta potential under varying ionic strength and Cd2+ presence.

The transport of biochar colloids (BCs) is a cross-media (water-soil-air) and cross-scale environmental process related to pollution diffusion, carbon cycling, and climate change. It requires multidisciplinary collaborative research to quantify its risks and formulate control strategies. In this study, column experiments compared the transport of BCs made from five feedstocks-Miscanthus Straw Pellets (MSP), Oil Seed Rape Pellets (OSR), Wheat Straw Pellets (WSP), Soft Wood Pellets (SWP), and Sewage Sludge Pellets (SS)-with/without cadmium (Cd2+). Published data were also used to create machine

Mycotoxins in meat products.

Mycotoxin presence in meat products is principally due to the development of toxigenic moulds during ripening, which concretely affect the dry-cured ones. Ochratoxin A (OTA) is the most prevalent mycotoxin in dry-cured hams and fermented sausages. Apart from collecting information on the main toxigenic moulds in dry-cured meat products, the objective of this review is to compile data about the mycotoxin prevalence and the tools for their mitigation. Although no very extensive studies have been performed on the mycotoxin occurrence in such products, much research has been conducted over the las

Municipal structural adjustment: For an institutional analysis of global development finance.

In this paper I examine climate-aligned development finance initiatives (DFIs) that foster private-sector investment in 'sustainable' urban infrastructures. I am concerned with the ways in which they work to create the institutional preconditions for such investment. I develop the notion of Municipal Structural Adjustment (MSA) as a lens for examining the fields of intervention and modes of policy-making through which these initiatives seek to reform municipalities' governance structures, innovate planning tools and introduce financial instruments. Empirically, this paper focuses on initiative
