Quality of life in schizophrenia: Symptomatic markers of improvement over time.

OBJECTIVE: Throughout the course of schizophrenia spectrum disorders, individuals experience significant fluctuations in a variety of clinical and functional dimensions, often negatively impacting their quality of life (QoL). To better understand clinical correlates of QoL change and investigate treatment targets for future intervention development, this study sought to longitudinally examine the impact of symptom severity on QoL. METHOD: Individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (N = 102) participated in an 18-month randomized trial of cognitive enhancement therapy. Measures of sympt

Successful mood repair in the laboratory predicts successful mood repair in daily life for typical but not for depression-prone young adults.

Successful mood repair (i.e., attenuating sad, dysphoric affect) is a critical form of emotion regulation that is necessary for healthy functioning. Laboratory-based studies have examined how well individuals can reduce sadness and how this process is affected by psychopathology like depression and cognitive mechanisms like attentional control. However, the extent to which laboratory-based findings inform about the regulation of sadness in daily life is unknown. To examine the ecological validity of laboratory-based mood repair paradigms, we compared mood repair success in the laboratory and d

Embodied concepts in Parkinson's disease: Insights from fruits versus animals semantic fluency impairments.

OBJECTIVE: Initial findings indicate that semantic memory retrieval of different categories, such as fruits and animals, is variably impacted in Parkinson's disease (PD). Importantly, theories of embodied cognition propose that these variances may stem from compromised motor processing in PD patients. Indeed, the conceptual representation of the fruits category may involve aspects of manipulability and graspability, which are less relevant for the animals category. We aimed to assess semantic memory retrieval of fruits versus animals category as assessed by semantic fluency (SF) in PD by using

Psychometric study of the revised Mood Rhythm Instrument (MRhI-r) in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects over 300 million people globally. The etiology of MDD is linked to circadian rhythm disruption, including the diurnal pattern of mood, cognition, and physiological processes. The revised Mood Rhythm Instrument (MRhI-r) was developed to assess self-perceived rhythmicity of symptoms and has previously been tested in nonclinical populations. This study evaluates the psychometric properties of the MRhI-r in a clinical MDD sample. Individuals with MDD and healthy controls completed the MRhI-r at baseline and after 2 weeks. Psychometric properties were assesse

Everyday ethnic discrimination and early substance use based on hair samples in high-risk racial/ethnic minority early adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Although racially and ethnically minoritized youth are more likely to experience adverse effects of substance use, and substance use before age 14 is strongly associated with an elevated risk of later substance use disorders, there is limited research identifying risk factors for early substance use. The study examined the role of experiencing ethnic discrimination from teachers, other adults outside of school, and other students in predicting early substance use (measured with hair toxicology reports). METHODS: The study used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development S

Real-world conversations across the schizophrenia spectrum: Implementing passive audio sensing to examine linguistic style matching.

Social dysfunction is a hallmark of schizophrenia. Experience sampling has facilitated the investigation of daily socialization to detect dysfunction and identify treatment targets. Yet, poor cognition and insight in schizophrenia interfere with subjective self-report. Passive audio sensing and lexical analysis offer a solution to examine objective markers of real-world functioning. Linguistic style matching (LSM), the tendency to coordinate speech patterns with conversation partners, has been linked to social affiliation and connection in healthy populations. It has been theorized that LSM ma

Adolescent health and the intersectionality of ethnicity/race, sex, and sexual orientation: A national probability sample from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

Although children with marginalized sociodemographic characteristics are exposed to increased health risk and disparities, there is a paucity of population-based research on health status of children occupying multiple social marginalities. The present study investigated implications of children's intersectional sociodemographic characteristics on health risk indicators. In this longitudinal cohort study, we used longitudinal data from the ongoing Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. The study used a population-based sample of 9- to 10-year-old children attending private and public sc

Within-person imbalance of reward sensitivity and executive functioning across adolescent development: A longitudinal examination of the dual systems model from childhood to adulthood.

The dual systems model of adolescent development asserts that the neurobiological systems underlying reward/motivational processes and cognitive control mature at different rates, resulting in an "imbalance" during adolescence whereby adolescents are biased toward rewards but unable to exert sufficient executive control in risk-taking contexts. While a hypothesized imbalance between these systems is central to the dual systems model, few studies have investigated longitudinal trajectories within and between each system with age. Therefore, this validation study assessed the developmental traje

Continuity in social communication development among school-aged siblings of autistic children.

Prospective studies of later born siblings of autistic individuals often focus on predicting autism diagnosis. Studies concentrating on siblings who do not develop autism have found subclinical atypicalities in some children as early as the first year of life. However, when followed to school-age, the continuity of these findings has been mixed. We tracked nonautistic siblings (n = 151 higher familial likelihood of autism, n = 115 lower likelihood) longitudinally from infancy to 6-16 years of age when participants completed a battery of social communication measures (parent report and direct o

Inconsistent reporting of past self-injurious thoughts and behaviors in children: A longitudinal analysis of data from the adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

In longitudinal research with adolescents and adults, one-third of individuals who report self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs) fail to report this history in the future. However, there is limited information regarding this phenomenon in children. This study examined the prevalence, correlates, and developmental shifts of inconsistent reporting of SITBs in children using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study baseline (BL, ages 9-10), Year 1 (Y1), and Year 2 (Y2) assessments. Lifetime SITBs were assessed annually using a computerized clinical interview. Reporting co

Common and uncommon risky drinking patterns in young adulthood uncovered by person-specific computational modeling.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol use offers social benefits for young adults, but also carries risk of significant negative consequences. Better understanding of processes driving alcohol use for those who experience negative consequences can prevent these harms. These at-risk young adults likely have drinking patterns in common and patterns unique to each individual. Evidence for these processes have been limited by methods that fail to capture the complex, heterogeneous, multivariate nature of drinking. We overcome these limitations with idiographic computational models. METHOD: We studied a sample of 97

Residual PTSD and depression symptoms among veterans receiving prolonged exposure therapy with and without topiramate.

OBJECTIVE: Residual symptoms are common following posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment. Despite the high prevalence of and poor outcomes associated with co-occurring PTSD and alcohol use disorder (AUD), only one study has examined residual symptoms following psychotherapy in a comorbid sample. METHOD: Veterans (N = 71) with PTSD and AUD were randomized to receive prolonged exposure therapy (PE) with placebo (PE + PLA) or topiramate (PE + TOP). PTSD and depressive symptoms were assessed at pre- and posttreatment. Frequency counts were calculated for each residual symptom. Fisher's ex

CT-derived brain volumes and plasma p-Tau217 for risk stratification of amyloid positivity in early-stage Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology is critical for timely intervention in Alzheimer's disease (AD). While Aβ positron emission tomography (PET) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers are accurate, their high cost and limited accessibility hinder routine use. We developed a computed tomography (CT)-based, two-stage workflow combining CT-derived atrophy patterns with plasma phosphorylated tau 217 (p-Tau217) to predict Aβ PET positivity. METHODS: In this cohort of 616 participants (521 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI], 95 with early dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT];

Videoconference-delivered acceptance and commitment therapy for depressed individuals with spinal cord injury sustained within the past 5 years: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: This pilot study examined the effects of videoconference-delivered acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), supplemented with psychoeducation materials, compared to psychoeducation materials alone, on depressive symptoms and other mental health outcomes in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) sustained within the past 5 years. METHOD: A parallel-group, two-arm randomized controlled trial was conducted in the United States with 34 adults who had sustained an SCI within 5 years and reported at least mild depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9] scores ≥5). A systematic review and meta-analysis of predictors of response to trauma-focused psychotherapy for posttraumatic stress disorder.

Although trauma-focused psychotherapy (T-F psychotherapy) is the treatment of choice for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), up to one half of patients do not respond to this treatment. Attempts to improve response to T-F psychotherapy have focused on augmenting fear extinction-based factors. Here, a systematic and meta-analytic review of predictors of T-F psychotherapy outcome was conducted with the goal of using an aggregate data-driven approach to elucidate baseline factors associated with treatment outcome. There were 114 studies that met inclusion criteria (N = 61, 970; Mage = 40.1 year

Worry differentially mediates posttraumatic cognition and posttraumatic stress symptom relationships among veterans seeking treatment associated with military sexual trauma.

Research has established negative posttraumatic cognitions (NPC) affect the development and course of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) following trauma exposure (L. A. Brown et al., 2019). Previous studies in civilian and combat veteran populations also suggest positive associations among worry, NPC (Beck et al., 2004; Bennett et al., 2009), and PTSS (Fergus & Bardeen, 2017). However, little research has investigated the prevalence of worry in veterans who have experienced military sexual trauma (MST), and no research has examined the role of worry in the relation between NPC and PTSS amon

Illusion of control or passive superstition? A comparison of two explanations for irrational gambling beliefs.

OBJECTIVE: The "illusion of control" is a dominant cognitive illusion in disordered gambling, but its role in shaping irrational gambling beliefs has been questioned by recent null experimental findings. Here, we aimed to test this recent work, in a preregistered Bayesian framework, by additionally correlating the dependent variable (nonuniform probabilistic beliefs) with self-reported gambling behavior and by exploring "passive superstition" as an alternative driver of these irrational gambling beliefs. METHOD: A between-participants online experiment involving three boxes, one of which a $1

Naturalistic patterns of sustained attention across early childhood: Developmental profiles and longitudinal associations with executive functions.

The capacity to sustain attention over time develops rapidly over early childhood and is associated with socioemotional and cognitive outcomes. However, sustained attention has largely been studied in either shared or independent contexts, leading to gaps in our understanding of how trade-offs between sustained attention to shared versus individual targets may predict later outcomes. We examined this question in a longitudinal sample of 1,290 children (49% female, 43% Black), living in predominately rural, low-income regions, using a naturalistic shared picture book reading task. Children's su

Unique versus shared neural correlates of externalizing psychopathology in late childhood.

Childhood externalizing psychopathology is heterogeneous. Symptom variability in conduct disorder (CD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and callous-unemotional (CU) traits designate different subgroups of children with externalizing problems who have specific treatment needs. However, CD, ODD, ADHD, and CU traits are highly comorbid. Studies need to generate insights into shared versus unique risk mechanisms, including through the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In this study, we tested whether symptoms of CD, ODD, ADHD

Agreement and discrepancies in patient-clinician reports of DSM-5-TR section III maladaptive personality traits: A study on a mixed outpatient sample.

The assessment of personality pathology based on dimensional models may improve self-other agreement, but previous research mainly adopted a categorical approach and overlooked the role of the person of the therapist. Our study examined patient-clinician agreement in a mixed sample of Italian outpatients using the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) and the PID-5-Informant Form (PID-5-IRF). Moreover, the role of clinician personality traits on agreement was preliminary explored. Sixty-eight outpatients (51.4% male, M = 30.30, SD = 12.05 years) and their treating clinicians (N = 22; 77.3% f
