[CSF connection of the intracranial cysts and cyst like lesions: Analysis with flow sensitive phase-contrast Cine MR imaging].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the potential role of ECG-gated flow sensitive phase contrast cine magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in detecting the communication between cystic intracranial lesions and neighboring cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) spaces. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty one patients with intracranial cystic lesions (arachnoid cyst, 15; epidermoid cyst, 2; glioma, 1; dermoid cyst, 1; and mega cisterna magna, 2) underwent CSF flow studies in addition to the conventional MR sequences. MR imaging was performed with ECG gated two dimensional fast imaging steady-state precession sequence (2D-FISP). Usi

Development of Bilateral Facet Cysts Causing Recurrent Symptoms After Decompression and the Placement of an Intralaminar Implant: A Case Report.

CASE: We report the development of bilateral symptomatic facet joint cysts in a 78-year-old man who had been treated with decompression and placement of a coflex device (Paradigm Spine) at L3-L4 and L4-L5. Preoperative imaging clearly demonstrated fluid in the facet joints without cysts. He underwent standard surgical treatment, but developed symptomatic facet joint cysts at 4 months postoperatively. The patient was treated with a revision decompression and replacement of the devices; there were no issues at the 32-month follow-up. CONCLUSION: While the coflex device has possible long-term bi

Bilateral cysts in the choroid plexus in a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a genetic systemic disorder, which is associated with cyst formation in several organs, renal function decline and a higher prevalence of intracranial aneurysms. We report a 52-year-old, otherwise healthy, man with ADPKD who had asymptomatic, bilateral, multiple cysts in the choroid plexus, which is an extremely rare abnormality. Recent evidence suggests that the polycystin proteins, which are dysfunctional in ADPKD, are found in ciliated choroid plexus cells that are involved with regulation of cerebrospinal fluid homeostasis. We hypothe

[Arachnoid cyst of the sphenoid sinus].

BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts of the paranasal sinus are rare. They have not been described yet in the sphenoid sinus. PATIENT AND METHOD: Microscopic-endoscopic endonasal surgery of the sphenoid sinus was performed on a 34-year-old female with a history of chronic headaches and a suspected mucocele of the sphenoid sinus in computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. An extended arachnoid cyst was found in the enlarged sphenoid sinus, which was obliterated with collagen, fibrin glue, and abdominal fat. RESULTS: There were no complications after the operation, and 12

Quantification and analysis of the glycosaminoglycans in human odontogenic cyst linings.

Glycosaminoglycans (GAG) were extracted from the connective tissue of 15 dental cysts, 2 dentigerous cysts and 7 keratocysts, and separated electrophoretically and chromatographically. Hyaluronic acid (dental, 2.38; dentigerous, 3.98; keratocyst, 3.19 micrograms uronic acid/mg lyophilized tissue) was the major GAG detected, with lesser amounts of heparin (dental, 1.70; dentigerous, 1.95; keratocyst, 1.80 micrograms uronic acid/mg lyophilized tissue) and chrondroitin-4-sulphate (dental, 1.33; dentigerous, 2.85; keratocyst, 1.37 micrograms uronic acid/mg lyophilized tissue). It is suggested that

A case of impacted central incisor due to dentigerous cyst associated with impacted compound odontome.

Odontomes are hamartomatous growths of odontogenic origin. Odontomes usually do not erupt into oral cavity and can cause several difficulties like swelling, displacement of teeth and adjacent structures, cystic changes and carcinomatous transformation. Odontomes are treated by surgical removal. Dentigerous cysts arise due to accumulation of fluid between reduced enamel epithelium and crown of unerupted tooth. Dentigerous cysts cause several difficulties such as swelling, non-eruption of involved teeth and displacement of adjacent teeth, thus requiring early detection and prompt treatment. Trea

Prolonged accumulation of high-dose methotrexate in a case with large liver cysts.

Methotrexate (MTX) has been documented to accumulate in "third spaces'' such as pleural effusions or ascitic fluids, resulting in delayed clearance and severe toxicity. We present a case of Burkitt lymphoma possessing large liver cysts, up to the size of 7 x 7 cm, wherein clearance of high-dose MTX was severely delayed, despite normal renal and liver functions. The serum MTX concentration was higher than 0.1 microM on day 12 and remained at toxic levels, higher than 0.01 microM, even on day 25, resulting in severe neutropenia, anorexia, and diarrhea. It was presumed that MTX accumulated in the

Toxic tubular injury in kidneys from Pkd1-deletion mice accelerates cystogenesis accompanied by dysregulated planar cell polarity and canonical Wnt signaling pathways.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by large fluid-filled cysts and progressive deterioration of renal function necessitating renal replacement therapy. Previously, we generated a tamoxifen-inducible, kidney epithelium-specific Pkd1-deletion mouse model and showed that inactivation of the Pkd1 gene induces rapid cyst formation in developing kidneys and a slow onset of disease in adult mice. Therefore, we hypothesized that injury-induced tubular epithelial cell proliferation may accelerate cyst formation in the kidneys of adult Pkd1-deletion mice. Mice were tre

Acute hydrocephalus secondary to obstruction of the foramen of monro and cerebral aqueduct caused by a choroid plexus cyst in the lateral ventricle. Case report.

Choroid plexus cysts are common and typically asymptomatic abnormal folds of the epithelial lining of the choroid plexus. Rarely, these cysts may gradually enlarge and cause outflow obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid. The authors present a case of a large choroid plexus cyst causing acute hydrocephalus in a previously healthy 2-year-old boy. The patient presented with markedly declining mental status, vomiting, and bradycardia over the course of several hours. Computed tomography scans demonstrated enlarged lateral and third ventricles with sulcal effacement, but no obvious mass lesions or hem

Ruptured giant thoracic hydatid cyst presenting with respiratory symptoms.

Pulmonary hydatid disease remains a global public health issue. Symptoms often result from cyst rupture, causing fever, cough, and hemoptysis. Radiographs may show homogeneous masses, air-fluid levels, or the pathognomonic "water lily" sign. Surgical removal is the primary treatment, with early diagnosis crucial to prevent acute hypersensitivity reactions and death.

Management of a Nulliparous IVF Patient with a Declined Ovarian Reserve After Discovery of an Atypical Ovarian Endometriotic Cyst.

PURPOSE: Endometriosis (EM) is a common cause of infertility, and an ovarian endometriotic cyst may affect the ovarian reserve, ovulation, and endometrial receptivity. The majority of EM cases are benign; however, EM may also be prone to malignant transformation, associated with infiltrative growth, and recurrent or distant metastasis. In this study, we report the management of an atypical cyst discovered through ovarian endometriotic cyst puncture prior to controlled ovarian stimulation (COS). CASE PRESENTATION: The patient required in vitro fertilization treatment due to EM and bilateral fa

Epidermoid cyst abscess of the neck masquerading as a thyroid abscess.

SUMMARY: In this case report, we describe a 37-year-old male who presented with fever and tender neck mass. Neck ultrasonography revealed a mixed echogenic multiloculated solid-cystic lesion containing turbid fluid and occupying the right thyroid region. Thyroid function tests showed subclinical hyperthyroidism. The patient was initially diagnosed with thyroid abscess and he was subsequently treated with percutaneous aspiration and i.v. antibiotics; however, his clinical symptoms did not improve. Surgical treatment was then performed and a pathological examination revealed a ruptured epidermoi

Occurrence of Liver Hydatid Cysts in a Donkey and Molecular Characterization of Echinococcus equinus.

Larval tapeworms of Echinococcus granulosus have been viewed as the etiological agent for the zoonotic disease cystic echinococcosis, but the species is a complex readily divided into several species and genotypes. Cystic echinococcosis is an important public health issue. Here, the case of liver hydatid cyst in a donkey and molecular characterization of the cyst is presented. The fluid-filled hydatid cyst materials were obtained from the liver of a necropsied donkey. Genomic DNA was extracted and PCR amplification of mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene as well as partial sequencing of mitochondrial c

A Case of Intrathoracic Gastric Duplication Cyst Detected on Prenatal Ultrasound Examination.

A 37-year-old (G4P3) woman was referred to our hospital at 32 weeks of gestation for the evaluation of a fetus with an intrathoracic cystic lesion. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed that a fetal cystic lesion without a mucosal layer was located in the posterior mediastinum. These findings were consistent with a bronchogenic cyst. At 38 3/7 weeks of gestation, an elective cesarean section was performed because of her previous cesarean section. A female neonate without any external anomalies, weighing 2,442 g, with Apgar scores of 8 and 9, and requiring no resuscitation was

The pseudomeningocoele that wasn't: case report of an adult who presented with a late infection of an implant.

This case report describes an unusual case of a 55-year-old male, who presented with what appeared to be a pseudomeningocoele. The patient suffered a skull fracture secondary to a direct blow almost 30 years prior, and had been repaired with a calvarial implant at that time. He had been symptom free for most of that time, until he presented to our institution with a bulging cyst in his left frontal region. Computed tomography revealed a calvarial defect at the site of the cyst and a presumptive diagnosis of pseudomeningocoele was made. As part of his treatment, the patient underwent a lumbar p

Occult intrasacral meningocele: case report and review of the literature.

Occult intrasacral meningocele, characterised by the presence of a cyst within the sacral spinal canal, is an unusual congenital lesion. A 26-year-old female presented with a history of low back pain and sensory disturbance in the lower extremities, and urinary incontinence. CT scan of the sacral region showed an asymmetrical widening of the sacral canal and the existence of a thinned bone contour. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed an intrasacral mass as a low signal intensity area on the T1-weighted image and a high signal intensity area on the T2-weighted image, suggesting a cyst cont
