The infant's ability to self-regulate caloric intake: a case study.

A case study which illustrates the infant's ability to regulate caloric intake through adjustments in formula intake is presented. A daily record of infant formula and supplemental food intake of a normal, bottle-fed male infant was kept from 1 week to 9 months after birth. The infant's physical growth was assessed at regular intervals. Measurements included weight, recumbent length, head circumference, and skinfold thicknesses. Feeding was ad libitum, and caregivers were highly responsive to the infant's satiety behaviors. Under these conditions, the infant adjusted his caloric intake as supp

Nutritional considerations in the management of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

This study examines the nutritional status of patients with ALS based on data derived from a dietary history, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical assessment. Twenty patients, 11 men and 9 women, were studied to determine nutritional status in order to differentiate appropriate therapy and monitor prognosis. The study suggests that nutritional support of these patients may help allay weight loss and retard muscle atrophy. Nutritional management involves (a) early detection and correction of inadequate nutrient intake, particularly of kilocalories; (b) concurrent modification in consist

Diet and growth of children with glycogen storage disease Types I and III.

Patients with glycogen storage disease (GSD) Types I and III were placed on a dietary treatment plan of frequent daytime feedings and continuous drip nocturnal enteral feedings of defined nutrient composition. Specific anthropometric measurements were collected to document and evaluate growth. There were a significant increase in arm muscle area and a relative decrease in triceps skinfold thickness not previously documented in the literature. Study results confirmed previous reports of accelerated growth and improvement of biochemical abnormalities. The dietitian's role in nutrition assessment

Diet and hyperkinesis--an update.

Ten years ago, Dr. Feingold proposed that hyperactivity and learning disabilities in children are commonly caused by the ingestion of food additives and claimed that elimination of foods with additives from the diet resulted in major improvements in three-quarters of hyperactive children. In the last five years, controlled double-blind studies have been conducted by many investigators to test this hypothesis. The results, which are mainly negative, are summarized. The authors conclude that 2% (contrasted with Feingold's claims of 75%) of hyperactive children respond adversely to dye additives.

Assessment of the zinc nutritional status of selected elderly subjects.

Elderly participants (with a mean age range of 71 to 75 years) residing in two housing complexes in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, can generally be characterized as predominantly women with a low socioeconomic status living alone. A majority of the participants consumed less than the RDA for food energy. The protein intake was nearly equal to or exceeded the RDA; however, the mean intake of zinc was only half of the RDA. The mean hair zinc concentration of the participants corresponded with the levels reported for this age group by other researchers. Their mean taste thresholds were higher (lower taste

Delayed hypersensitivity skin testing: response rates in a surgical population.

The results of this study indicate that skin test responses should be measured at both 24 and 48 hours post-injection and considered reactive or positive if induration of greater than or equal to 5 mm. is noted at either time. The practice of measuring responses at 48 hours only is neither appropriate nor recommended as it may produce a large percentage of false negative results. Erythema without induration was noted in a small percentage of patients. Future studies should evaluate the efficacy of erythema greater than or equal to 15 mm. in the absence of induration as a reactive response to m

Nutritional and metabolic effects of alcohol.

Alcohol is commonly used in almost all parts of the world, and its adverse effects on the liver, central nervous system, and other organs are widely recognized. Less well known are the deleterious actions of alcohol on nutrient metabolism. The purpose of this article is to call attention to the way in which alcohol intake influences the absorption and metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

Revision of the Ontario phenylalanine equivalency system and development of a low protein equivalency system.

The Phenylalanine Content of Foods, an equivalency system used in the dietary treatment of phenylketonuria, was prepared in 1975. Recently this system was revised to include a total of 372 food items in various raw and processed states. Food lists are available in a simple version for parents listing the serving size per phenylalanine equivalent, and in a more comprehensive version for dietitians providing weights for the serving sizes as well as values for phenylalanine, protein, and energy per equivalent. Subsequently, the system was modified to form a low protein equivalency system for use

Food use and perceived food meanings of the elderly.

Food use frequency and food perception analyses were used to assess food use patterns of non-institutionalized, subjectively healthy seniors, aged 65 to 77 years and living alone. The majority of the sample maintained variety and nutritional balance in food selection; the women showed greater use several items, particularly fruits and vegetables. Tea, whole wheat bread, eggs, coffee, potatoes, margarine, carrots, and orange juice ranked highest in the core food list. Perceived taste and health beliefs were strong motives in food selection.

Quality assurance in ambulatory nutritional care. II. Field testing of criteria.

Quality assurance criteria developed for six target populations of pregnant women and obese infants, children, and adolescents were field tested in 102 ambulatory care settings to determine whether they were relevant, understandable, measurable, behavioral, and achievable. Field testing identified specific problems in ambulatory nutritional care settings related to documentation and feasibility of using patient care records to provide data to assess quality of care and to determine how statements were formulated. Field test results were used to rewrite the criteria. Findings are consistent wit

Developing and testing a programmed instruction unit on PKU.

The methods used in developing and evaluating a programmed instruction unit on PKU and its dietary management are presented. The unit was shown to be a reliable, valid, effective, and enjoyable teaching aid for parents. All ten mothers using the text showed improvement in their post-test scores, and analysis by correlated sample student t-test demonstrated that the increases were highly significant (p of less than 0.0005). In addition, the mothers' responses to the learning experience were notably favorable. All enjoyed the text and strongly recommended its use for new families in the Clinic.

Effect of oral contraceptive agents on vitamin and mineral requirements.

Oral contraceptive agents alter the metabolism of some nutrients, which could affect nutritional requirements. The effects of oral contraceptives on pyridoxine, folacin, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin A, ascorbic acid, zinc, and copper as determined by studies done in the last five years are reviewed. Evidence for actual nutritional deficiencies due to the use of oral contraceptives is still insufficient, and more research is needed. Supplements are advised only for those women in whom other factors, such as disease, impair nutritional adequacy.

A hypertension diet education program for public health nurses.

The Hypertension Diet Education Program was conducted to prepare practical nurses to provide nutritional counseling to a high-risk, hypertensive minority group residing in public housing. The dietary management of hypertension and the use of educationally and culturally relevant teaching strategies were emphasized as means of promoting patient education and dietary compliance for improved blood pressure control. Positive results in both paraprofesional and patient education were achieved. The nurses attained significant test score improvements, and 175 (63 per cent) of the patients counseled o

Effect of Feingold's K-P diet on a residential mentally handicapped population.

Independent investigations of Feingold's K-P diet have not produced consistent results. Even the most carefully designed experiments by Connors et al. resulted in an internal inconsistency; namely, the results differed, depending on the order in which the control and K-P diets were used. This study involved a double-blind, crossover design with random assignment to treatment and control groups. Subjects were drawn from a residential mentally handicapped population. There was no significant difference between Feingold's K-P diet and the control diet regarding the specific dependent variables of

Irritable bowel syndrome and dietary fiber.

The effects of an increase in dietary fiber include: (a) More frequent stools, (b) more voluminous stools, (c) an alteration in the fecal flora, (d) an increase in fecal sterol excretion, and, it appears likely, (e) a reduction in intraluminal pressures in the sigmoid colon. Epidemiologic data comparing global differences in prevalence of certain diseases with the fiber content of diets suggest that there may be a relationship between the two. With a certain amount of post-ad hoc reasoning, it can be shown that some of the known effects of fiber could account for differences in disease prevale

Nutrition component in a comprehensive child development program. II. Nutrient intakes of low-income, pregnant women and the outcome of pregnancy.

Twenty-four-hr. food recall records taken by home visitors in an intervention program for disadvantaged families yielded data similar to three-day records and 24-hr. recalls taken by nutritionists. The young, urban, low-income expectant mothers studied had intakes below the recommended allowances for all nutrients studied except ascorbic acid. Energy, calcium, and iron were particularly low. The use of energy- and/or sodium-restricted diets during pregnancy was associated with lower intakes of other nutrients. Recent studies showed that low energy intake appears common among low-income, young,
