Administered the Child Abuse Potential Inventory to 65 abusing and 65 matched nonabusing parents. An item analysis indicated that 77 of the 160 Inventory items significantly discriminated between abusers and nonabusers. A discriminant analysis, which employed the 77 significant items, correctly classified 125, or 96% of the 130 Ss as abusers or nonabusers. Identical results were obtained from a stepwise multiple regression analysis. Many college students are using substances at levels consistent with Substance Abuse or Dependence, yet little explanation for this phenomenon exits. The aim of this study was to explore a risk factor profile that best separates those with low and high potential for having a substance use disorder (SUD). A discriminant function analysis revealed that participants with a high probability of having a SUD misperceive others' alcohol and marijuana use to a greater extent than those with a low probability of having a SUD. Implications for educators and counselors on college campuses are discussed.

This study reports on the use of the Brief Symptom Inventory, a shortened version of the Symptom Check List-90-Revised, to measure psychopathological symptoms that predict male domestic violence. Since the time of Kraepelin, in continental Europe the sadness of depression has been considered to have a "distinct quality' basic to the diagnosis of pathological depression. This distinct quality has been interpreted by observers but patients have been noted to have difficulty verbalizing differences from normal sadness. The authors have used a discriminant analysis to study how patients define pathological sadness and as a result have developed a Pathological Sadness Index with a sensitivity of 0.94, a specificity of 0.96 and a total misclassification rate of 5% (kappa w = 0.90).
