BACKGROUND: Chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis (CNH) is a common chronic condition characterized by a tender nodule on the helix or antihelix of the ear which may or may not have accompanying crusting, scaling, or ulceration and that is often difficult to treat.
OBJECTIVE: Develop an easy, effective, and durable treatment to reduce the pain and clinical signs including ulcerations associated with CNH using injectable hyaluronic acid (HA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients were injected and followed up in 2 to 4 weeks intervals using 0.2 to 0.3 mL of various HA with a high G-Prime.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple surgical techniques have been proposed to close tympanic perforations. Eavey, two decades ago, described a technique aimed at closing central perforations in children. For this, he designed a butterfly-shaped cartilage graft that was placed between the tympanic membrane in an inlay manner. This technique showed great effectiveness for the closure of perforations as well as low morbidity, rapidity and great economic difference.
METHODS: We performed a descriptive study of a series of cases analysing 32 interventions in children and adults with the modified Eavey techniqu

We conducted a prospective, randomized, controlled trial to compare outcomes in type I tympanoplasty patients who received an autologous microsliced modified cartilage perichondrium shield graft (cartilage group) and those who received an autologous temporalis muscle fascia graft (fascia group). Our three outcomes measures were (1) anatomic success rates at 3 months, (2) hearing results at 6 months, and (3) rates of morphologic success (i.e., the absence of reperforation, retraction, and graft displacement) at 2 years among those in each group who had an intact graft at 3 months. Of 56 patient

Costochondral grafts have been the gold standard for ear reconstruction in cases of microtia repair for decades. Microtia repair has been traditionally associated with a low complication rate, yet little exists in the literature regarding the management of complications when they do occur. Postoperative infections of costochondral grafts have traditionally resulted in complete graft loss, necessitating additional surgery or leaving the patient with continued physical disfigurement and the accompanying psychological and emotional distress. The authors wish to present a case report demonstrating

The goal of this pilot study was to test vocal fold medialization using autologous tragal cartilage and perichondrium by direct approach for treating high vagal paralysis. Five patients with the skull base tumors with involvement of the vagus nerve underwent concurrent vocal fold medialization with surgical excision. The patients were evaluated preoperatively, and at 14, 60 days, and 6 months later. Complete medialization with horizontal and vertical realignment was achieved. Improvement of voice and breathiness was correlated with the increase of closed quotient; the contact area of the vocal

OBJECTIVE: To describe a simple technique for harvesting tragal cartilage and describe its use in rhinoplasty.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Rhinoplasties performed between January 2005 and June 2007 in which tragal cartilage grafts were utilized by the senior author (CSC) were reviewed to assess type of graft, preservation of tragal contour, and donor-site morbidity.
RESULTS: Tragal cartilage grafts were used in three primary and three secondary rhinoplasty patients. Postoperative follow-up ranged from six months to 12 months. Tragal cartilage was used as five a

INTRODUCTION: The palisade tympanoplasties-technique with using of tragal and conchal autografts for reconstruction of the tympanic membrane and the auditory canal wall was described.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The operation started with the endaural incision. Tragal and conchal autograft palisade fragments with perichondrium for reconstruction of the tympanic membrane and the auditory canal wall have been used up to 1996 in 15,300 cases. We placed palisaded cartilage fragments parallel to the manubrium of the malleus in type I tympanoplasties and in type II or III procedures parallel to the long

We report on a 35-week gestation female fetus with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria (HGP). This patient, who is the first reported with neonatal HGP in the English literature but is the fourth, counting three previous French cases, supports the existence of a more severe prenatal form of progeria. She died 7 hours after birth and presented with intrauterine growth retardation, premature aging, absence of subcutaneous fat, brachydactyly, absent nipples, hypoplastic external genitalia, and abnormal ear lobes. The child's combination of clinical and skeletal manifestations differentiates this form of

Donor-site complications, specifically chest wall deformities and thoracic scoliosis, occurring after harvest of costal cartilage grafts are presented and discussed. The cases of 18 patients (12 male and 6 female), who underwent costal cartilage grafts for microtia reconstruction from 1975 to 1993, were reviewed for donor-site complications using radiography and physical examination. Ribs from which costal cartilage had been harvested showed increased inward bowing on radiographs in 16 of 32 donor sites. The frequency of rib deformity in donor sites was 20.0 percent when cartilages were harves

A pinched nasal tip is caused by collapsed alar rims secondary to weak lateral crura. The resulting deformity can be corrected with alar spreader grafts--autogenous grafts of septal or auricular cartilage that are inserted between and deep to the remaining lateral crura to force them apart, propping up the caved-in segment. We describe the surgical technique, indications, and variations in design of alar spreader grafts and present representative results from our series of 38 patients.

Microtia patients encountered over 9 years from 1978 to 1986 were listed. The total number of patients for the period was 155, 113 males and 42 females. The microtia occurred on the right side in 93 cases, on the left in 50 cases and bilaterally in 12 cases. Surgery was performed in 115 cases during the period. We applied a modification of the Brent method and have to date obtained good results. This method has several advantages: 1) Use of 7th and 8th rib cartilage means a relatively small amount of material, minimal surgical invasion and short operation time; 2) A more naturalistic auricle w

We reviewed 1042 operations in which a Plasti-Pore prosthesis was used for reconstruction of the sound pressure transfer mechanism. In all cases cartilage was interposed between the prosthesis and the tympanic membrane or graft. The short-term hearing results for these cases are the same as for other techniques but the hearing is more stable in the long run. Other advantages of this technique are a reduced incidence of recurrent and residual cholesteatoma. Extrusion occurred in 7% of the cases but has become less frequent with recent refinements in technique. We intend to continue using Plasti
