Cytochrome nanowires under electron microscopy.

Microbial nanowires are appendages that Bacteria and Archaea use to transfer electrons to external surfaces, such as minerals, electrodes, or other microbes. While initial studies suggested that nanowires were modified pili, recent advancements in cryo-EM revealed that microbial nanowires are composed of multi-heme c-type cytochromes. In this review, we discuss the discovery of microbial nanowires, advancements that allowed elucidation of their near-atomic resolution cryo-EM structures, and the impact of heme arrangement on electron transfer. We also discuss how new structural information can

A novel dual-mode Fluorescence/Colorimetric Aptasensor Based on NH2-MIL-88B(Fe)/CDs-Apt for Kanamycin Detection.

Kanamycin (KANA) is a veterinary drug residue that is highly scrutinized in food safety testing. In this study, a metal-organic framework-based aptamer-nanoenzyme (NH2-MIL-88B(Fe)/CDs-Apt) was introduced for the dual-mode detection of KANA. NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) catalyzes the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H₂O₂ to form blue ox-TMB, thereby enabling colorimetric detection. As a fluorescence quencher, NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) quenches the fluorescence of CDs via photogenerated electron transfer (PET) or fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanisms. The detection limits were 0.…

The mechanistic nature of 1FBP* quenching is ascribed to energy transfer, while for 1Trp* it is attributed to electron transfer and/or exciplex formation. These results are consistent with those obtained by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, where 1FBP* was detected as a band with a maximum at ca. 425 nm and a …

Resolving Anomalous Cage Escape in Fe(III) Photosensitizers: A Marcus Theory Framework.

The cage escape yield (ΦCE), i.e., the separation of the geminate radical pair formed upon bimolecular excited-state electron transfer, is a key parameter that governs the efficiency of photoredox transformations. For Fe(III) photosensitizers featuring doublet ligand-to-metal charge transfer excited states, ΦCE are notoriously small in polar solvents such as acetonitrile yet increase markedly in dichloromethane, an empirical observation that has long remained unexplained. Herein, excited-state quenching and ΦCE were quantified for the reaction between the prototypical [Fe(phtmeimb)2]+ photosen

Low-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructure photoanodes for photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution application: recent progress and prospects.

Solar-driven hydrogen evolution through photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting technology provides a prospective approach for green energy production. To accomplish reliable PEC systems with sufficient solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiencies (STH, ≥10%), one of the current primary challenges lies in the design and fabrication of highly-performing semiconductor (SC) photoanodes to overcome its high overpotential requirement and sluggish surface oxidation kinetics. The emergence of low-dimensional layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with extraordinary electronic and optical pro

Enhanced ORR Activity of Modified Recycled Graphite-Based Anode Materials.

Addressing the kinetic limitations of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential for improving the efficiency of electrochemical energy-conversion devices such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Here, we demonstrate a circular-economy-oriented upcycling strategy for transforming end-of-life lithium-ion battery graphite anodes into metal-free ORR catalysts through oxidative activation and targeted molecular functionalization. Spent graphite anode material was activated by using H2SO4/HNO3 mixtures to increase defect density and surface reactivity, followed by surface functionalization

Dual-Curved Cold-Plate Integration for Enhanced Liquid-Based Thermal Management of Cylindrical Li-Ion Batteries.

Liquid-cold-plate-based battery thermal management systems (BTMSs) are widely adopted in new-energy vehicles (NEVs) due to their high heat-transfer efficiency and cost-effectiveness; however, their application to cylindrical batteries is limited by curvature-induced compatibility issues. To address this challenge, a novel dual-curved thermally conductive cold plate (TCCP) integrated with a liquid-based BTMS is proposed, providing an efficient and compact heat-transfer interface for cylindrical battery modules. The thermal behavior of the battery system is comprehensively evaluated under a high

Regioisomeric carbazole-dicyano-dioxin AIDF emitters for efficient triplet harvesting, two-photon absorption and bioimaging.

Integrating aggregation-induced emission (AIE) with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) offers a useful strategy to achieve efficient triplet harvesting in the condensed phase. Here, we report three carbazole-dicyano-dioxin donor-acceptor regioisomers (oCN1, oCN2, and pCN) that exhibit pronounced aggregation-induced delayed fluorescence (AIDF) from solution to aggregates, neat films and crystals. Oxygen incorporation and peripheral tert-butyl groups make the molecular framework more rigid and help suppress aggregation caused quenching. These substitutions also promote twisted donor

Laser-Induced Functionalization of Flexible Polyimide-Carbon Fiber for Real-Time Multimodal Physiological Monitoring of Chronic Wounds.

Translating laser‑induced graphene (LIG) from rigid planar films to wearable textiles has been limited by substrate transfer steps that fracture the porous carbon architecture. Here, we report laser‑induced functionalized fibers (LIFF), a transfer‑free strategy that directly writes graphitic carbon onto polyimide (PI) fiber substrates via laser irradiation, forming an in situ 3D conductive network. By optimizing defocus distance (z = -0.5 mm) and pulse density (PPI/DPI), we achieve subsurface graphitization and continuously program surface wettability without chemical or plasma treatment. This

Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks (HOFs) for NADH Regeneration and Enzymatic Hydrogenation: HOF-in-HOF Artificial Photosynthetic System for Solar-to-Chemical Conversion.

The efficiency of artificial photosynthesis lies not only in the catalysts themselves, but also in the spatiotemporal landscape for efficient mass-energy coupling, which is governed by electron, proton, and molecule transfer. Herein, we propose a scaffold engineering strategy to construct an enzyme-photo-membrane coupled artificial photosynthetic system (epmCAPS) within HOF-in-HOF architecture for NADH regeneration and enzymatic hydrogenation, where enzyme-loaded HOF particles for substrate conversion are encapsulated within photocatalytic HOF capsular membranes for cofactor regeneration. Revealing the Role of Ligand Dissociation in Ru(II) Pincer-Catalyzed CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

The hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol is a key transformation for sustainable carbon utilization and energy conversion. Although metal-ligand cooperation has been widely explored in catalyst design, the mechanistic role of dynamic ligand dissociation in CO2 hydrogenation remains insufficiently understood. In this work, density functional theory calculations are performed to investigate the pathway selectivity in Ru-catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation. The results show that the ligand-dissociation pathway is energetically more favorable than the ligand-retained metal-ligand cooperative pathway throughou

Unveiling Vacancy-Driven Stability: Atomic and Electronic Insights into Ni/Al2O3 Interfaces.

The Ni/Al2O3 interface bears the load transfer and energy dissipation, which determines the service performance of the composite materials. In this study, three distinct vacancy-defect-modified interface models (D1, D2, and D3, corresponding to vacancies in the first, second, and third layers of the Ni substrate surface, respectively) were constructed to systematically investigate the regulatory mechanism of vacancies on interfacial stability. The underlying mechanism of vacancy-enhanced interfacial stability was elucidated from both atomic-scale structural and electronic property perspectives

Insights into the 1O2 generation of activation of persulfate by zinc ferrite loaded on oxalic acid-modified activated carbon: Interface mechanism and molecular dynamics.

Developing carbonaceous composites with strong non-radical activity and recyclability is key for sustainable wastewater purification. Herein, a novel photocatalytic process was designed using zinc ferrite loaded on oxalic acid-modified powdered activated carbon (ZFO/OA/PAC) to activate persulfate (PDS) under visible light (VL) irradiation. ZFO was in-situ grown onto OA/PAC via C=O bridging, forming stable Zn/Fe-O-C bonds that suppressed magnetic agglomeration and enabled directional electron transfer. The optimized interfacial binding energy of 22.45 kcal/mol reduced the activation energy barr

NSD2 drives t(4;14) myeloma cell dependence on adenylate kinase 2 by diverting one-carbon metabolism to the epigenome.

Chromosomal translocation (4;14), an adverse prognostic factor in multiple myeloma (MM), drives overexpression of the histone methyltransferase nuclear receptor binding SET domain protein 2 (NSD2). A genome-wide CRISPR screen in MM cells identified adenylate kinase 2 (AK2), an enzyme critical for high-energy phosphate transfer from the mitochondria, as an NSD2-driven vulnerability. AK2 suppression in t(4;14) MM cells decreased nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP[H]) critical for conversion of ribonucleotides to deoxyribonucleosides, leading to replication stress, DNA damage, and

Hydrogen cyanide catalytic hydrolysis mechanism by Al-doped graphene: A density functional theory study.

CONTEXT: The hydrogen cyanide (HCN) hydrolysis reaction mechanism over Al-doped graphene was investigated through the density functional theory method. HCN preferentially adsorbed vertically on the Al top site to form a stable adsorption configuration. H2O preferentially adsorbed parallel on the Al top site to form a stable adsorption configuration. The competitive adsorption of HCN and H2O weakened the adsorption stability of each molecule over Al-doped graphene. The break of C-N and H-O bonds was the key process in the preferential fracture pathway of the C-H bond. The break of C-N and C-H b

Oscillator Strengths and Cross Sections of the Valence-Shell Excitations of HBr Studied by Fast Electron Impact.

The oscillator strengths and cross sections of the valence-shell excitations of HBr were determined by fast electron scattering with an incident electron energy of 1500 eV and an energy resolution of 80 meV. The momentum transfer dependence behaviors of the generalized oscillator strengths have been used to elucidate the transition characteristics. The present results show that the strong spin-orbital interaction results in the observation of some triplet states in the (Λ, S) coupling and the constant generalized oscillator strength ratios for the pair states with the same electronic configura

Terrace-Like 2D Hierarchically Porous Iron/Cobalt Metal-Organic Framework: Ambient Fast Synthesis and Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction Application.

It is urgent to design a low-cost electrocatalyst with high activity to enhance the efficiency of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is limited by the slow four-electron transfer kinetics process. Nevertheless, traditional synthetic methods, including calcination and solvothermal, of the electrocatalysts are high-cost, low-yield, and energy-hogging, which limits their industrial application. Herein, an ambient fast synthetic method is developed to prepare terrace-like Fe/Co bimetal-organic framework (TFC-MOF) electrocatalyst materials in gram scale in 1 h. The method in this paper is desig
