Key Challenges for Respiratory Virus Surveillance while Transitioning out of Acute Phase of COVID-19 Pandemic.

To support the ongoing management of viral respiratory diseases while transitioning out of the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries are moving toward an integrated model of surveillance for SARS-CoV-2, influenza virus, and other respiratory pathogens. Although many surveillance approaches catalyzed by the COVID-19 pandemic provide novel epidemiologic insight, continuing them as implemented during the pandemic is unlikely to be feasible for nonemergency surveillance, and many have already been scaled back. Furthermore, given anticipated cocirculation of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza

The spatial spread of schistosomiasis: A multidimensional network model applied to Saint-Louis region, Senegal.

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic, water-related disease that is prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas of the world, causing severe and chronic consequences especially among children. Here we study the spatial spread of this disease within a network of connected villages in the endemic region of the Lower Basin of the Senegal River, in Senegal. The analysis is performed by means of a spatially explicit metapopulation model that couples local-scale eco-epidemiological dynamics with spatial mechanisms related to human mobility (estimated from anonymized mobile phone records), snail dispersal

Metabolic Syndrome and Outcome Predictions: Friends or Foes?

OBJECTIVES: An analysis based on epidemiological material to show whether the term Metabolic Syndrome (MS) should be adopted when aiming at predicting coronary heart disease (CHD) and major cardiovascular disease (CVD) fatal events. MATERIAL AND METHODS: MS was defined according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and risk factors were identified in the Italian Risk Factors and Life Expectancy (RIFLE) population study covering over 25,000 adult men from a pool of 19 Italian population samples. The original MS definition and the plain original units of measured risk factors were cha

Machine Learning Potential for Identifying and Forecasting Complex Environmental Drivers of Vibrio vulnificus Infections in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Environmental change in coastal areas can drive marine bacteria and resulting infections, such as those caused by Vibrio vulnificus, with both foodborne and nonfoodborne exposure routes and high mortality. Although ecological drivers of V. vulnificus in the environment have been well-characterized, fewer models have been able to apply this to human infection risk due to limited surveillance. OBJECTIVES: The Cholera and Other Vibrio Illness Surveillance (COVIS) system database has reported V. vulnificus infections in the United States since 1988, offering a unique opportunity to bo

Predicting adolescent psychopathology from early life factors: A machine learning tutorial.

OBJECTIVE: The successful implementation and interpretation of machine learning (ML) models in epidemiological studies can be challenging without an extensive programming background. We provide a didactic example of machine learning for risk prediction in this study by determining whether early life factors could be useful for predicting adolescent psychopathology. METHODS: In total, 9643 adolescents ages 9-10 from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study were included in ML analysis to predict high Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) scores (i.e., t-scores ≥ 60). ML models wer

Development and validation of models to predict personal ventilation rate for air pollution research.

Air pollution intake represents the amount of pollution inhaled into the body and may be calculated by multiplying an individual's ventilation rate with the concentration of pollutant present in their breathing zone. Ventilation rate is difficult to measure directly, and methods for estimating ventilation rate (and intake) are lacking. Therefore, the goal of this work was to examine how well linear models using heart rate and other basic physiologic data can predict personal ventilation rate. We measured personal ventilation and heart rate among a panel of subjects (n = 36) while they conducte

A systematic review of early modelling studies of Ebola virus disease in West Africa.

Phenomenological and mechanistic models are widely used to assist resource planning for pandemics and emerging infections. We conducted a systematic review, to compare methods and outputs of published phenomenological and mechanistic modelling studies pertaining to the 2013-2016 Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemics in four West African countries - Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria. We searched Pubmed, Embase and Scopus databases for relevant English language publications up to December 2015. Of the 874 articles identified, 41 met our inclusion criteria. We evaluated these selected studi

Epidemiological and digital syndromic surveillance data on dengue, chikungunya, and SARI in Brazil.

Vector-borne diseases, such as dengue and chikungunya, along with air-borne diseases like influenza and COVID-19, are prone to epidemics, which increases the demand for real-time outbreak monitoring. Developing such systems requires harmonized datasets for calibration and validation. In this study, we created a dataset containing official disease notifications for dengue, chikungunya, and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) across Brazilian states for over a decade. The dataset integrates Google Trends search data for each disease and all associated symptoms, organized by the correspond

The prenatal phase of retinopathy of prematurity.

AIM: To explore the current literature on prenatal inflammation-associated risk factors for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS: Subjective summary of selected experimental and epidemiological publications that support the authors' central hypothesis that the aetiology of ROP begins before birth. RESULTS: Based on current evidence we suggest that, contrary to current aetiological models, the process of ROP development begins with a prephase in utero. This beginning is likely initiated by inflammatory responses that are associated with intrauterine infection. CONCLUSION: We propose a n

Vaccination can drive an increase in frequencies of antibiotic resistance among nonvaccine serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

The bacterial pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major public health concern, being responsible for more than 1.5 million deaths annually through pneumonia, meningitis, and septicemia. Available vaccines target only a subset of serotypes, so vaccination is often accompanied by a rise in the frequency of nonvaccine serotypes. Epidemiological studies suggest that such a change in serotype frequencies is often coupled with an increase of antibiotic resistance among nonvaccine serotypes. Building on previous multilocus models for bacterial pathogen population structure, we have developed a the

Axial length of myopia: a review of current research.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a worldwide common type of refractive error. It is a non-life-threatening disorder with huge social and economic consequences due to its increasing prevalence. Axial length (AL) is the primary determinant of non-syndromic myopia. It is a parameter representing the combination of anterior chamber depth, lens thickness and vitreous chamber depth of the eye. AL can also be treated as an endophenotype of myopia and may provide extra advantages in the investigation of its genetic basis. The study of AL will not only identify the determinants of eye elongation, but als

What is the association between obsessive-compulsive disorder and eating disorders?

Because eating disorders (EDs) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) co-occur at high rates and can have functionally similar clinical presentations, it has been suggested that both constructs might be part of a common spectrum of disorders. Identifying the relationship between EDs and OCD may lead to the discovery of important shared core disease processes and/or mechanisms for maintenance. The objective of this paper is to understand the relationship between EDs and OCD by systematically reviewing epidemiological, longitudinal and family studies guided by five models of comorbidity posited

Advancing brain health equity with Indigenous peoples: A critical imperative.

Indigenous communities hold rich knowledges, cultural practices, and kinship networks that sustain cognitive resilience and nurture brain health across the life course. Yet these enduring strengths are often obscured by biomedical models that overlook the structural determinants of health-including the cumulative effects of colonization, educational inequity, and socioeconomic disadvantage-that diminish brain health. Accordingly, dementia disproportionately affects Indigenous populations globally, often presenting with earlier onset and higher prevalence compared to non-Indigenous groups. This

Beyond the sine wave: unveiling climate-driven baseline mortality cycles.

The relationship between temperature and mortality is well-established, with higher mortality rates occurring in moderate climates during wi … selines. The deviation from the sine-like approximation mirrors the idealized outbreak pattern from epidemiological models with sharper surges and more gradual declines. The results point to winter infections, impacted by acquired immunity and weather conditions, as the primary drivers of fluctuations in mortality. In warmer regions, there is an apparent shift toward a …

Associations of multiple metals exposure with immunoglobulin levels in pregnant women: Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study.

Metal may affect maternal immune function, but few epidemiological studies have reported the associations between multiple-metal exposure and maternal immunoglobulin (Ig) levels. Based on the Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study, 1059 participants were included, and eleven metals in whole blood samples and serum IgA, IgG, IgE and IgM levels were measured. Linear regression, quantile-based g-computation (QGC), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were used to evaluate the associations. Compared with the first tertile of metal levels, arsenic (As) was negatively associated with IgE (β = -

Past, present, and future of chemically induced hepatocarcinogenesis rodent models: Perspectives concerning classic and new cancer hallmarks.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the main primary liver cancer, accounts for 5 % of all incident cases and 8.4 % of all cancer-related deaths worldwide. HCC displays a spectrum of environmental risk factors (viral chronic infections, aflatoxin exposure, alcoholic- and nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases) that result in molecular complexity and heterogeneity, contributing to a rising epidemiological burden, poor prognosis, and non-satisfactory treatment options. The emergence of HCC (i.e., hepatocarcinogenesis) is a multistep and complex process that addresses many (epi)genetic alterations and phe
