Effects of strenous exercise, followed by rest, and of potassium administration on blood chemistry values were studied in two patients with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis and in normal volunteers. These procedures produced attacks of flaccid paralysis that occurred concomitantly with rapid rises in serum potassium concentrations and decreases in blood glucose and inorganic phosphate levels. With the exception of the serum potassium level which rose following exercise and potassium administration, there were no changes in the blood chemistry values of the normal volunteers. During the induced

BACKGROUND: Few studies demonstrate delayed recovery after exercise in children and adults with heart disease. We assess the recovery patterns of gas exchange parameters and heart rate (HR) in children with repaired Tetralogy of Fallot (rToF) compared to healthy peers and investigate the correlation with ventricular function and QRS duration.
METHODS: 45 children after rToF and 45 controls performed a maximal incremental cardiopulmonary exercise test. In the subsequent recovery period, patterns of VO2, VCO2 and HR were analysed. Half-life time (T1/2) of the exponential decay and drop per minu

BACKGROUND: Menthol inhalation (MI) lowers dyspnea ratings during loaded breathing in COPD and cycle exercise in healthy adults. Proposed mechanisms include stimulation of cold receptors in the upper airways, modulating perception of breathing-related effort and airflow.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Does MI also alleviate exertional dyspnea in COPD?
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Twenty patients with COPD (60% male; mean age ± SD, 68 ± 6 years; FEV1, 47% ± 17% predicted) completed 2 constant-load cycle exercise tests (73% ± 7% peak power output) to exhaustion with menthol or placebo (strawberry flavoring)

Detailed heart rate (HR) response patterns during exercise in patients with heart failure (HF) and sinus rhythm remain uncertain. We screened consecutive patients with HF who underwent cardiopulmonary exercise tests at a large academic center from November 2013 to July 2023. HR response during exercise was statistically classified using logistic differential equation models. A total of 99 patients were included. Of them, 75 patients were assigned to "sigmoidal pattern" and the other 24 to "exponential pattern." Patients with the sigmoidal pattern were older and exhibited higher plasma B-type n

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) imposes limitations due to severe dyspnea and fatigue, which are often linked to diminished exercise tolerance, potentially influenced by compromised microvascular density, blood flow, and muscle strength. Myofascial release techniques (MRT) have demonstrated the capacity to enhance blood flow by reducing fascial tension.
PURPOSE: To assess the impact of incorporating MRT into Circuit Resistance Training (CRT) in comparison to an unsupervised home-based rehabilitation (RUHB) program on exercise tolerance (ET), muscle strength (MS), quality of life (QoL), and dep…

Disabling atrial fibrillation (AF)-related symptoms and different testing settings may influence day-to-day cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) measurements, which can affect exercise prescription for high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-to-vigorous intensity continuous training (M-VICT) and their outcomes. This study examined the reliability of CPET in patients with AF and assessed the proportion of participants achieving minimal detectable changes (MDC) in peak oxygen consumption (V̇O2peak) following HIIT and M-VICT. Participants were randomized into HIIT or M-VICT after

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) significantly improves cardiovascular outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). International guidelines vary in the minimum recommended frequency of supervised exercise from 1 to 3 sessions per week. This is the first study in the Middle East and North African regions assessing the impact of 2 versus 3 days/week of supervised exercise on peak exercise capacity in patients with CAD. Single-center retrospective cohort study involving 362 patients enrolled in the only CR center in the State of Qatar. Only high-quality data was included by strict evaluat

OBJECTIVES: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a birth defect affecting the respiratory functions, functional performance, and quality of life (QOL) in school-aged children. Rarely have studies been conducted to evaluate the impacts of respiratory muscle training on school-aged children with postoperative CDH. The current study was designed to evaluate the impacts of respiratory muscle training on respiratory function, maximal exercise capacity, functional performance, and QOL in these children.
METHODS: This study is a randomized control study. 40 children with CDH (age: 9-11 years) we

BACKGROUND: Despite improvement in lung function, most lung transplant (LTx) recipients show an unexpectedly reduced exercise capacity that could be explained by persisting peripheral muscle dysfunction of multifactorial origin. We analyzed the course of symptoms, including dyspnea, muscle effort and muscle pain and its relation with cardiac and pulmonary function parameters during an incremental exercise testing.
METHODS: Twenty-four bilateral LTx recipients were evaluated in an observational cross-sectional study. Recruited patients underwent incremental cardio-pulmonary exercise testing (C

BACKGROUND: Both coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) and reduced exercise capacity are associated with adverse cardiovascular prognosis. The association between CMD and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) derived exercise capacity in symptomatic individuals without obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) is not clear. We investigated whether exercise capacity was reduced in women with angina, CMD and no obstructive CAD compared with sex-matched controls. Furthermore, we assessed the association between CMD and other CPET-derived variables.
METHODS: All participants underwent transt

BACKGROUND: Increase of exercise capacity (peak VO2) after cardiac rehabilitation improves outcome in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Systolic and diastolic function have been associated with peak VO2, but their role towards improvement of exercise capacity remains unclear. It is unknown which exercise intensity has the most beneficial impact on left ventricular (LV) geometry and function in CAD patients without heart failure.
METHODS: 200 stable CAD patients without heart failure were randomized to 3months of aerobic interval training (AIT) or aerobic continuous training (ACT).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) are increasingly being referred to pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) where exercise capacity is measured, often by an incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT). These patients are frequently limited by severe dyspnoea and exertional desaturation. Available guidelines suggest two ISWT are needed; however, this is time consuming and it has not been reported whether a practice ISWT is necessary in ILD. We aimed to investigate if a practice ISWT is needed for patients with ILD referred to PR.
METHODS: Patients with ILD who attended a

BACKGROUND: The 6-min walk distance (6MWD) and incremental shuttle walk distance (ISWD) are clinically meaningful measures of exercise capacity in people with non-cystic fibrosis (CF) bronchiectasis, but the change in walking distance which constitutes clinical benefit is undefined. This study aimed to determine the minimal important difference for the 6MWD and ISWD in non-CF bronchiectasis.
METHODS: Thirty-seven participants with mean FEV1 70% predicted completed both field walking tests before and after an 8-week exercise program. The minimal important difference was calculated using a dist
