Intra-operative electron beam radiotherapy is a new treatment modality. The abdomen is the area of greatest potential applicability of IORT and therefore its effect on retroperitoneal structures was investigated in a canine model. The retroperitoneal structures tolerate 30 to 40 Gy well, with the exception of the radiation-sensitive ureter which showed fibrosis. Twenty to 25 Gy is within the safe dose limits for the clinical application of IORT.

An autopsy case of pigmented dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (Bednár tumor) with systemic metastasis is reported. No previous example of this tumor showing widespread metastasis has been reported in the literature. The patient, a 45-year-old man, developed a tumor on the right upper arm. The tumor recurred twice and metastasized to other parts of the skin, lungs and brain during the 8-year clinical course. Magnetic resonance (MR) scans were reviewed of 25 children and adolescents from the age of 9 months to 18 years referred with a suspected or proven diagnosis of intracranial tumor. Twenty-one of these children had MR scans positive for tumor. Histology was available in 14. The other seven patients were managed clinically as cases of cerebral tumor, although histologic confirmation was lacking. Seventeen tumors displayed an increase in both T1 and T2. OBJECTIVE: To compare radiographic findings and determine useful criteria to differentiate between intranasal neoplasia and chronic rhinitis in cats.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
ANIMALS: Cats with chronic nasal disease caused by neoplasia (n = 18) or by chronic rhinitis (n = 11).
