This study was conducted to evaluate the occurrence of mycoses affecting the feet of soccer players and to compare this results with those in non-athlete individuals of the same age and sex. Initial evaluation consisted of a dermatological examination of the foot in 22 Chinese athletes, 83 Brazilian athletes and 24 Brazilian non-athletes. BACKGROUND: Among the therapeutic possibilities for onychomycosis, chemicalnail avulsion is a logical approach to the eradication of the pathogen.
METHODS: A new formulation was used as a nail lacquer containing 40% urea in a film-forming solution in 10 patients presenting with onychomycosis. The urea nail lacquer was applied with a brush twice a day for 1 week by the patient and for a further week in two patients presenting total dystrophic onychomycosis.
RESULTS: This transungual delivery system weakens the nail plate/nail bed attachment in the diseased area.

Blastomycosis is a fungal infection of immunocompetent hosts. We present a case of cutaneous blastomycosis acquired in New Brunswick, which provides evidence that this disease is endemic in Atlantic Canada. This case also demonstrates that the diagnosis of blastomycosis may be elusive. Perseverance, a high index of clinical suspicion and close cooperation with the microbiology laboratory may be required to diagnose this uncommon condition.

Idiopathic multicentric acro-osteolysis is a complex heterogenic disease that may simulate mycetoma. A ten-year-old child has developed the condition, diagnosed as mycetoma for 7 years. Medical genetic examination of the patient helped correctly diagnose the disease. Proband's younger brother suffered from the same condition. We present clinical, angiological, and histopathological findings concerning different kinds of so-called "kaposiform" acroangiodermatitis. In particular, we refer to the etiopathogenesis, prognosis, differential diagnosis, and therapy of each entity. The similarities between the so-called "kaposiform" acroangiodermatitis and Kaposi's sarcoma are primarily derived from clinical criteria. In contrast to Kaposi's sarcoma, the histopathological picture of acroangiodermatitis usually shows stasis dermatitis.

An open, non-comparative study was carried out by four general practitioners into the efficacy and tolerability of a new antifungal preparation, bifonazole 1% gel. The preparation was used once daily to treat clinically diagnosed, superficial dermatophytoses and erythrasma of the feet or groin in 91 patients of which 51 were confirmed by mycological examination. A complete mycological evaluation was available for 28 patients and a cure was recorded in 23 (89%) of these cases. Four patients reported discomfort and burning on application of the preparation and changed to alternative treatments.

Twenty-eight patients with severe cutaneous infections received cefoperazone, 2 grams intramuscularly twice a day for seven days. A wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens were isolated from admission cultures. All patients showed rapid clinical improvement. In 122 patients with fungal diseases studied over a six month period, sixty were seen with dermatophyte infections. Onychomycosis is the most common nail disorder in adults. Predisposing factors are immunosuppression, poor peripheral circulation, diabetes mellitus, increasing age, nail trauma, and tinea pedis.
