Changes in frontal plane kinematics over 12-months in individuals with the Percutaneous Osseointegrated Prosthesis (POP).

BACKGROUND: A bone-anchored prosthesis (BAP) eliminates the need for a conventional socket by attaching a prosthesis directly to the user's skeleton. Currently, limited research addresses changes in gait mechanics post BAP implantation. OBJECTIVE: Examine changes in frontal plane movement patterns after BAP implantation. METHODS: Participants were individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation (TFA) enrolled in the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Early Feasibility Study examining the Percutaneous Osseointegrated Prosthesis (POP). The participants completed overground gait assessme

Bilateral orbital roof fracture.

Bilateral orbital roof fractures are rare events usually associated with high-energy impact trauma. The clinical picture is often multiple because of involvement of cranial, cerebral, and facial injuries. The primary diagnostic and therapeutic approaches aim to safeguard the cerebral state and to intercept the consequences of severe orbital trauma. The latter may present dramatic events and determine permanent ocular bulb or optic nerve damage, even vision impairment and blindness. Immediate intraorbital decompression decreases the pressure exerting directly or indirectly on the optic nerve. S

Destructive Frontonasal Mucocele Following Facial Trauma and Surgery.

Mucoceles are fluid filled cysts with numerous etiologies that can erode bone and if left untreated, can lead to infraorbital and intracranial complications. With limited cases published in the medical literature, our patient with a frontonasal mucocele expanding from the frontal sinus to the nasal dorsum with erosion of the nasal bones and upper lateral cartilages, provides an opportunity for evidence-based diagnosis and treatment. We present a 24-year-old female with a nasal mass destroying numerous nasal structures. Three surgical approaches were considered: open rhinoplasty, bicoronal appr

[Radiodiagnosis of Le Fort type fractures].

Le Fort's fractures of maxillary bones are referred to grave injuries that require an accurate and urgent diagnosis. A total of 70 patients with different variants of such fractures were examined. The x-ray examination included polypositional roentgenography, linear tomography and panoramic sonography with the Sonarc apparatus. The injuries with all signs of Le Fort's fractures of two and even three types predominated, asymmetric injuries were rather frequent. Panoramic sonography with the patient in a modified position helped specify the volume and extension of the injury to the facial bones,

Cranio-Dental Anomalies in Capuchin Monkeys (Cebus spp. and Sapajus apella) From the Northern Andes and Central America.

Morphological variation comprises differences among individuals of the same species, but when such variation is rare or unusual, it is consi … countries in Central and South America. The most frequent anomaly was the unusual extension of the frontal bone between the parietal bones, followed by the displacement of teeth and the presence of the bregmatic fontanel bone. It is important to encourage the reporting and investigation of cranio-dental anomalies in non-human primates, as these efforts will c …

Giant Occipital Intradiploic Epidermoid Cyst.

Intraparenchymal or intradiploic epidermoid cysts are very rare. Most of these cysts, when present, tend to involve the frontal and temporal lobes, and occasionally, the pineal gland or the brain stem. Here, we report a 45-year-old female, who presented with localized occipital headache and a tender occipital swelling, gradually increasing in size. She was hemodynamically and neurologically stable and did not have any focal neurological deficits. Whole skull and brain imaging revealed a well-demarcated expansile lytic lesion in the right occipital bone, which was hypointense on T1-weighted and

Exophytic Osteochondroma of the Brow.

Most bony and cartilaginous lesions of the orbit and periorbital compartments are benign, grow endophytically, and are composed of dense lamellar bone (eburnated or ivory osteomas). An 87-year-old woman had a well-circumscribed, firm, round, and exophytic lesion of the brow region for at least 15 years. Excisional surgery disclosed an osteocartilaginous lesion with an enveloping pseudocapsule (periosteum/perichondrium) and a narrow stalk connecting it to the frontal bone. The periphery of the lesion displayed lamellar bone which appeared to be replacing a central cartilaginous zone. The adjace…

Pott's puffy tumor in a 12-year-old boy.

Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is a rare complication of sinusitis characterized by subperiosteal abscess and osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. Early diagnosis and treatment is vital before it causes intracranial complications such as subdural empyema or brain abscess. Herein we describe the case of a 12-year-old patient who developed preseptal cellulitis and PPT, and was successfully treated with abscess drainage, sinus surgery and long-term antibiotic therapy.

Three-dimensional computed tomography imaging of a frontal skull base fracture.

A 7-year-old boy presented with recurrent meningitis after head trauma. Coronal computed tomography (CT) revealed prolapse of the intracranial soft tissue into the right ethmoidal sinus, leading to the diagnosis of right frontal skull base fracture. Three-dimensional CT with bone windows provided a lifelike image of the fracture lateral to the right olfactory groove. This image was most useful in the preoperative planning of the repair surgery.

Self-stabilizing osteotomy for frontal bar advancement.

This technique is simple, quick to perform, and produces a rigid block against posterior relapse of the advanced frontal bar in surgery for bicoronal synostosis. This stability is achieved without the need to place a bone graft across the craniectomy site in small infants with rapidly expanding brains. Finer and fewer interosseous wires are required, decreasing the chance of transcutaneous palpation, and this principle can be incorporated into most osteotomy patterns around the orbits.

Complications of acute frontal sinusitis.

The bone separating the frontal sinus from the anterior cranial fossa and the orbit is often quite thin. This, plus the interrelated venous drainage system of these areas, forms the anatomic basis for serious orbital and intracranial complications that must be recognized early. These include orbital cellulitis and abscess, cavernous sinus thrombosis, subdural and brain abscess and meningitis. Early hospitalization for intravenous antibiotic therapy and, occasionally, emergency surgical drainage are required.

Imaging features of a brown tumor with extensive skull involvement: Relevance for dental radiology.

This case report describes a rare, asymptomatic brown tumor in a patient with end-stage renal disease. The lesion was incidentally detected during a computed tomography (CT) scan of the paranasal sinuses, performed upon a dentist's recommendation to investigate maxillary sinusitis. CT imaging revealed an expansive osteolytic lesion with irregular margins and a ground-glass appearance involving the left side of the sphenoid and frontal sinuses. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with multiplanar T1 and T2-weighted sequences without contrast demonstrated a solid tissue-like expansive le

CT and cross-sectional anatomy of the paranasal sinuses in the Holstein cow.

The structure of paranasal sinuses in cattle is difficult to understand due to its complexity, age-related changes, and insufficient published data. In this prospective, anatomic study, we described the anatomy of the paranasal sinuses in the Holstein cow using computed tomography (CT) and cross-sectional anatomic slices. Twelve healthy adult Holstein cow heads were used for this study. The heads were scanned using CT, and frozen anatomical sections were taken. The locations, borders, and relationships of the paranasal sinuses were defined on the anatomical sections and CT images. The paranasa

A Case Report of Pycnodysostosis Associated with Multiple Pituitary Hormone Deficiencies and Response to Treatment.

Pycnodysostosis is a rare autosomal recessive osteosclerotic bone disorder associated with short stature and multiple bony abnormalities. Growth hormone (GH) deficiency may contribute to short stature in about 50% of patients. Available literature has rarely reported other pituitary hormone deficiencies in pyknodysostosis. Though the management remains conservative, recombinant human GH (rhGH) has been tried in selected patients. Here we present a case of pycnodysostosis which was evaluated for associated co-morbidities and found to have multiple pituitary hormone deficiencies. A 7-year-old gi

The validation and application of a finite element human head model for frontal skull fracture analysis.

Traumatic head injuries can result from vehicular accidents, sports, falls or assaults. The current advances in computational methods and the detailed finite element models of the human head provide a significant opportunity for biomechanical study of human head injuries. The biomechanical characteristics of the human head through head impact scenarios can be studied in detail by using the finite element models. Skull fracture is one of the most frequent occurring types of head injuries. The purpose of this study is to analyse the experimental head impacts on cadavers by means of the Strasbour

[Ethmoid-frontal mucocele. Apropos of 15 cases from 1985 to 1990].

Between 1985 and 1990, 15 ethmoid frontal mucoceles were collated. All our patients consulted us at the exteriorization stage. A CT-scan is the ideal examination, making it possible to assert the diagnosis and to individualize the bone destruction and the neighbouring tissue repression. Trans-ethmoid or trans-nasal marsupialization by an external or endonasal approach provided excellent results after a 1 to 5 year follow-up period.

Surgical correction of the acromegalic face. A one stage procedure with a team approach.

The features of acromegaly are presented with special reference to facial deformity. A one-stage procedure with careful pre-operative planning is advocated. The operating team is composed of a plastic surgeon and an oral surgeon. The frontal protrusion is corrected by osteotomy, the vertical and anteroposterior facial disproportion by bimaxillary procedures, the nasal deformity by rhinoplasty or skull bone grafting, and the macroglossia by tongue resection. This results in an improvement of the patient's psyche and frequently improvement in speech.

Stability in correction of hypertelorbitism and Treacher Collins syndromes.

In the authors' experience, correction of hypertelorbitism either by facial bipartition or by moving only the orbits has proved to be very stable. This is based on the design of the osteotomies and the use of the frontal bar. On the contrary, the rotation of the midfacial segment combined with mandibular lengthening for the correction of Treacher Collins has a strong tendency to relapse because of the backward pull of the soft tissues. Primary stability in these cases depends on the quality of bone grafts, their placement, and skeletal fixation.
