Bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) are psychiatric conditions marked by emotional disorders managed through the ingestion of great amount of food, with consequent vomiting for avoiding weight gain. Such behavioral habits are dysfunctional and severely impact both psychological and physical health, also compromising neurobiological processes. In the present review, we focus on recent neuroimaging findings (2010-2019) that provide insight into the neural bases of BN and BED. We describe the role of different neuroimaging techniques (magnetic resonance imaging, both structural a

Visual hallucinations (VH) are a common symptom in multiple clinical and non-clinical populations. Although structural and functional neuroimaging has informed the understanding of VH, temporal resolution is limited. Electrophysiological techniques provide a complementary perspective on dynamic and temporal aspects of neural functioning, offering greater insight into the mechanisms underlying their formation. In this review we examine and critically evaluate the emerging evidence base utilising electrophysiological approaches in the study of VH. Overall, increased visual system excitability, d…

Multimodal neuroimaging, such as combined electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), are being increasingly used to investigate the human brain in healthy and diseased conditions. However, certain neuroimaging data are typically acquired in different body positions, e.g., supine fMRI and upright EEG, overlooking the effect of body position on signal characteristics. In the current study we examined EEG signals in three different positions, i.e., supine, standing and sitting, in patients with a balance disorder called mal de debarquement syndrome (MdDS). Indi

The accuracy of the clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) is still limited. Especially in the early stages, when cardinal symptoms are not conclusive, diagnosis can be delayed as structural neuroimaging methods such as CCT or MRI do not provide characteristic features that allow the diagnosis of this chronic neurodegenerative disorder. Functional neuroimaging using PET and SPECT techniques is helpful in patients with first signs of parkinsonism, but expensive and not broadly available. In this scenario, transcranial sonography (TCS) has proven to be helpful. Up to 90% of PD patients s…

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), functional MRI (fMRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) have been central to characterisation of abnormalities in brain structure and function in both clinical and preclinical Huntington's disease (HD). One current challenge in clinical HD research is the identification of sensitive and reliable biomarkers to detect progressive neurodegeneration and neural dysfunction, which could be used to assess the effect of therapeutic intervention on brain structure and function in a HD clinical trial. To this end, both established and novel neuroimaging approaches coul

Neuroimaging studies using angry or contemptuous human facial photographic stimuli have suggested amygdala hyper-responsivity in social anxiety disorder (SAD). We sought to determine if an angry "schematic face" (simple line drawing) would evoke exaggerated amygdalar responses in SAD patients compared with healthy control (HC) subjects. Angry, happy, and neutral schematic faces were overtly presented to matched cohorts of 11 SAD and 11 HC subjects for passive viewing, whereas brain functional magnetic resonance imaging signal was measured at 1.5 Tesla. Voxel-wise analyses were performed using

BACKGROUND: There is a substantial body of research supporting the vascular depression hypothesis of late-life depression. To update this hypothesis so it incorporates recent research, we propose that the term subcortical ischemic vascular depression may be a more accurate representation of the disease process. We sought to investigate this diagnosis as a construct by examining differences between depressed subjects with and without magnetic resonance imaging defined subcortical ischemic vascular depression.
METHODS: This case-control study examined 139 depressed elderly subjects. Demographic

We present three patients with neurologic complications of the spine from hydatid disease. The first was a 6-year-old girl with lower limb paralysis evolving over 2 weeks. Neuroimaging revealed a cystic mass compressing the spinal cord at the level of T8 and extending from the vertebral body. She underwent surgical decompression. Histopathologic examination confirmed hydatid disease. At 6-month follow-up, functional improvement had occurred with full ambulation. She continues on long-term albendazole therapy. Two other patients are described, one with primary spinal disease and the other with

Since the discovery in 1996 that a region within caudal parahippocampal cortex subserves learning and recall of topographical information, numerous studies aimed at elucidating the structures and pathways involved in scene recognition have been published. Neuroimaging studies, in particular, have revealed the locations and identities of some of the principal cortical structures that mediate these faculties. In the present study the detailed organization of the system is examined, based on a meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies of scene processing in human subjects, combined with reviews of th

Individuals with schizophrenia display notable deficits in social functioning. Research indicates that neural connectivity within the default mode network (DMN) is related to social cognition and social functioning in healthy and clinical populations. However, the association between DMN connectivity, social cognition, and social functioning has not been studied in schizophrenia. For the present study, the authors used resting-state neuroimaging data to evaluate connectivity between the main DMN hubs (i.e., the medial prefrontal cortex [mPFC] and the posterior cingulate cortex-anterior precune

In this paper, an organic personality disorder case by penetrating brain injury, predominantly localized in the right frontal lobe, is presented. Neuropsychological and neuroimaging (CT scan studies) were performed. We assessed the main cognitive aspect: orientation, attention, memory, intelligence, language, visual-spatial functioning, motor functioning, executive functioning and personality. The results obtained, point out disorders in the patient's behavior and in the executive functions. Likewise, other cognitive functions as: attention, memory, language and visual-spatial functioning, sho

BACKGROUND: The neural mechanisms underlying electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in treating major depressive disorder (MDD) remain unclear. Previous neuroimaging studies have primarily employed voxel-based methods, which report only 35 % of the spatial localization of surface-based methods. This study aimed to investigate the antidepressant mechanisms of ECT using surface-based analyses.
METHOD: Longitudinal resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from 46 MDD patients undergoing ECT. Surface-based analyses were performed to investigate alterations in the amplitude

Large-scale functional brain networks have most commonly been evaluated using static methods that assess patterns of activation or functional connectivity over an extended period. However, this approach does not capture time-varying features of functional networks, such as variability in functional connectivity or transient network states that form and dissolve over time. Addressing this gap, dynamic methods for analyzing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data estimate time-varying properties of brain functioning. In the context of resting-state neuroimaging, dynamic methods can rev

OBJECTIVES: Conduct disorder (CD) is characterized by the violation of the rights of others or basic social rules and a repetitive, persistent pattern of antisocial and aggressive behaviors. A large number of functional and structural neuroimaging studies have identified widely abnormalities in specific brain regions in CD, but the alterations in the topological organization of functional networks among them remain largely unknown.
METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was applied to investigate the intrinsic functional connectivity in 18 pure CD patients and eighteen t

OBJECTIVE: The network hubs, characterized by the large number of connections to other regions, play important roles in the proper and effective transfer of information. Previous functional neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) have aberrant functional connectivity. The changing pattern in functional network hubs in SAD, however, remains incompletely understood.
METHODS: Twenty SAD patients and 20 matched healthy controls were recruited. Resting-state fMRI data were obtained using a gradient-recalled echo-planar imaging sequence. Whole-brain v…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Functional neuroimaging and electrophysiological studies suggest that dysplastic neural tissue in malformations of cortical development may participate in task performance, and that functional organization can be altered beyond visible lesion boundaries. The aim of this work was to investigate cortical function in a heterogeneous group of patients with malformations of cortical development.
METHODS: Twelve patients participated in the study, 2 for each of the following categories: subcortical, periventricular, and band heterotopia, unilateral and bilateral polymicrogyr…

Insulin is a peptide well known for its role in regulating glucose metabolism in peripheral tissues. Emerging evidence from human and animal studies indicate the multifactorial role of insulin in the brain, such as neuronal and glial metabolism, glucose regulation, and cognitive processes. Insulin resistance (IR), defined as reduced sensitivity to the action of insulin, has been consistently proposed as an important risk factor for developing neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment. Although the exact mechanism of IR-related cognitive impairment still awaits further elucidation, neuroimagin

BACKGROUND: The apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE ε4) allele is the strongest genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, its neurobiological impact assessed by neuroimaging outcomes during midlife, before the onset of cognitive impairment, has not been summarised. This systematic review synthesises evidence on neuroimaging differences associated with APOE ε4-carrier status in cognitively healthy midlife adults and evaluates whether AD-related risk can be detected across imaging modalities.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted up until November 2025 to identify studies reporting
