Genetic and toxinological divergence among populations of Tityus trivittatus Kraepelin, 1898 (Scorpiones: Buthidae) inhabiting Paraguay and Argentina.

Envenoming by scorpions in genus Tityus is a public health problem in Tropical America. One of the most medically significant species is Tityus trivittatus, which is known to occur from southwest Brazil to central-northern and eastern Argentina. In this work, we studied the lethality, composition, antigenicity, and enzymatic activity of venom from a T. trivittatus population found further north in urban areas of eastern Paraguay, where it has caused serious envenomation of children. Our results indicate that the population is of medical importance as it produces a potently toxic venom with an

Distinct genetic profile with recurrent population-specific missense variants in Korean adult atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a rare thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), characterized by micro-angiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and renal failure. In more than half of cases, genetic defects leading to overactivation of the alternative complement system have been identified. In this study, we investigated genetic defects in Korean adult patients with aHUS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-six Korean adult patients with aHUS were ascertained from the Korean TMA Registry. Genetic variants of 15 aHUS-related genes (eight core genes [CFH, CFB, CFI, CD46, C3,

Genetic Variants on SCN5A, KCNQ1, and KCNH2 in Patients with Ventricular Arrhythmias during Acute Myocardial Infarction in a Chinese Population.

OBJECTIVE: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. About half of sudden deaths from AMI are mainly because of malignant ventricular arrhythmias (VA) after AMI. The sodium channel gene SCN5A and potassium channel genes KCNQ1 and KCNH2 have been widely reported to be genetic risk factors for arrhythmia including Brugada syndrome and long QT syndrome (LQTS). A few studies reported the association of SCN5A variant with ventricular tachycardia (VT)/ventricular fibrillation (VF) complicating AMI. However, little is known about the role of KCNQ1

Meta-analysis of GWA studies provides new insights on the genetic architecture of skin pigmentation in recently admixed populations.

BACKGROUND: Association studies in recently admixed populations are extremely useful to identify the genetic architecture of pigmentation, due to their high genotypic and phenotypic variation. However, to date only four Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have been carried out in these populations. RESULTS: We present a GWAS of skin pigmentation in an admixed sample from Cuba (N = 762). Additionally, we conducted a meta-analysis including the Cuban sample, and admixed samples from Cape Verde, Puerto Rico and African-Americans from San Francisco. This meta-analysis is one of the largest eff

Immunochip meta-analysis in European and Argentinian populations identifies two novel genetic loci associated with celiac disease.

Celiac disease (CeD) is a common immune-mediated disease of the small intestine that is triggered by exposure to dietary gluten. While the HLA locus plays a major role in disease susceptibility, 39 non-HLA loci were also identified in a study of 24,269 individuals. We now build on this earlier study by adding 4125 additional Caucasian samples including an Argentinian cohort. In doing so, we not only confirm the previous associations, we also identify two novel independent genome-wide significant associations at loci: 12p13.31 and 22q13.1. By applying a genomics approach and differential expres

A pilot study-genetic diversity and population structure of snow leopards of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, using molecular techniques.

CONTEXT: Hand therapy optimises functional use of the hand and arm after injury and is an expert area of practice for occupational therapists (OTs) and physiotherapists. In rural Australia, patients frequently travel to metropolitan or larger regional centres for initial hand surgery and rehabilitation. However, rural patients' access to follow-up hand therapy after the initial phase of care is impacted by several factors such as transport options, distance, staff shortages and availability of therapists skilled in hand therapy. To ensure service equity, these challenges require consideration

Association between common telomere length genetic variants and telomere length in an African population and impacts of HIV and TB.

Prior studies in predominantly European (Caucasian) populations have discovered common genetic variants (single nucleotide polymorphisms, SNPs) associated with leukocyte telomere length (LTL), but whether these same variants affect LTL in non-Caucasian populations are largely unknown. We investigated whether six genetic variants previously associated with LTL (TERC (rs10936599), TERT (rs2736100), NAF1 (7675998), OBFC1 (rs9420907), ZNF208 (rs8105767), and RTEL1 (rs755017)) are correlated with telomere length (TL) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in a cohort of Africans living with

The seroprevalence rate and population genetic structure of human cystic echinococcosis in the Middle East: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) represents an increasing public health concern in many parts of the world, including the Middle East. The present study is the first systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the seroprevalence rate and population genetic structure of human CE in the eastern Mediterranean region. To estimate the population genetic structure, Echinococcus sequences of the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene isolated from countries from this geographical area were retrieved from the GenBank database. An electronic search for articles from 1990 until 2015 was performed using da

Genetic relationships and population structure of Malassezia pachydermatis strains isolated from dogs with otitis externa and healthy dogs.

Malassezia pachydermatis causes infections of the skin and mucous membranes, especially in animals. It is commonly accepted that symptom manifestation depends on the physiological status of the host (different metabolic, hormonal, and immunological disorders). However, it should be considered whether distinct strains of M. pachydermatis could have different pathogenic potential and maintain opposite relations with the host, such as commensalism or parasitism. The scope of this study was to explore the population structure, genetic diversity, and phylogenetic relationships of M. pachydermatis s

Identification of novel genetic variants in the mutational hotspot region 14 kb upstream of the LCT gene in a Mexican population.

Several polymorphic loci linked to lactase persistence (LP) have been described, all located in a small mutational hotspot region far upstream (∼14 kb) of the lactase (LCT) gene. One is typically found in Europeans, LCT -13910C > T, several others are found in East Africans and Arabs, e.g. LCT -13907C > G and LCT -13915T > G. The possibility of similar loci, specific to populations in South and Central America, has not received much attention so far. To identify possible novel polymorphisms in the mutational hotspot region, we sampled 158 subjects from a rural area in South-Central Mexico. DNA

Exploring approaches to facilitate family communication of genetic risk information after cystic fibrosis population carrier screening.

Population carrier screening for cystic fibrosis (CF) enables individuals with no known family history of the condition to ascertain their risk of having a child with CF. When an individual is identified as a carrier of CF, a life-shortening condition, they are encouraged to inform their relatives who are at increased risk of being a carrier. Research suggests that the uptake of CF carrier testing amongst relatives of carriers or people with CF is low. This study aimed to explore approaches to facilitate the process of family communication of genetic information after an individual is identifi

Genetic variation in matrix metalloproteinase MMP2 and MMP9 as a risk factor for idiopathic recurrent spontaneous abortions in an Indian population.

PURPOSE: Matrix metalloproteinases, MMP2 and MMP9, are found to have an important role during ovulation and pregnancy because of their capacity to degrade components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) thereby facilitating cell migration and angiogenesis. In this respect, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the association of the promoter polymorphisms -1306 C > T and -1562 C/T in MMP2 and MMP9 respectively with couples diagnosed with idiopathic recurrent spontaneous abortions (IRSA). The expression levels of these two genes were also studied in fetal tissue. METHODS: In this case cont

Gerbode Ventricular Septal Defect -A Rare Cardiac Anomaly Associated with Genetic Variants in Indian Population- A Case Series.

Gerbode defects are rare Ventricular Septal Defects (VSD) constituting approximately one percent cases of congenital heart diseases. The genetic predispositions towards the Gerbode Defect (GD) have remained an unexplored area of study till date. We investigated the genotype-phenotype correlation in patients with Gerbode VSD. Molecular genetic study on Sanger sequencing and subsequent data analysis showed that the contributing sequence variations in the NKX2-5, GATA4 and TBX5 gene lies in one of the highly conserved regions and this region is responsible for encoding a functional protein. Genetic association study of common variants in TGFB1 and IL-6 with developmental dysplasia of the hip in Han Chinese population.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a congenital or developmental deformation or misalignment of the hip joint that is affected by environmental and genetic factors. Recently, polymorphisms in both TGFB1 and IL-6 have been identified as being significantly associated with hip osteoarthritis in Caucasians. In this study, we conducted a case-control study involving 4,206 Han Chinese individuals to investigate the effects of TGFB1 and IL-6 on the disease status and severity of DDH. A total of 32 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected to ensure coverage of the two genetic loc
