Coralline hydroxyapatite orbital implant (bio-eye): experience with 158 patients.

PURPOSE: To assess the problems seen in 158 patients with coralline hydroxyapatite (HA) orbital implants (Bio-Eye). METHODS: A consecutive case series of 170 patients receiving coralline HA implanted by two surgeons over a 5-year period were reviewed. The authors analyzed age, type of surgery, implant size, peg system, follow-up duration, time of pegging, problems encountered, and treatment. RESULTS: Twelve patients were lost to follow-up after 5 months, leaving 158 patients who were followed from 6 to 130 months (average, 39 months). Problems in unpegged implants occurred in 36 (22.8%) pati

The clinicopathological spectrum of benign peripunctal tumours.

PURPOSE: Because of the rarity of peripunctal tumours and their clinical classification as conjunctival or eyelid tumours, they have gained little attention in the literature. We conducted a retrospective study to illustrate the different clinical and histopathological spectrum of peripunctal tumours seen at two oculoplastics clinics. METHODS: In a retrospective interventional clinicopathologic case series study, all the charts of patients with peripunctal tumours presented at an ophthalmic oncology clinic in Jerusalem, Israel and an oculoplastics clinic in Boston, USA were reviewed. The tumo

A randomized clinical trial of the success rates of bilamellar tarsal rotation and tarsotomy for upper eyelid trachomatous trichiasis.

A randomized clinical trial study was conducted to compare the success rates of two surgical methods: Bilamellar Tarsal Rotation (BTR) and Tarsotomy (Transverse Tarsotomy and lid margin Rotation = TTR) for trachomatous trichiasis of the upper lid; where success was defined as no lash/eyeball contact in all positions of gaze, complete lid closure, no under or over correction. The study was conducted at Minellik II Hospital, Addis Ababa. Two hundred fifty six upper eyelids of 153 patients with entropion/trichiasis related to trachoma were enrolled in the two groups. Patients were randomly alloca

Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-3 (VEGFR-3): a marker of vascular tumors with presumed lymphatic differentiation, including Kaposi's sarcoma, kaposiform and Dabska-type hemangioendotheliomas, and a subset of angiosarcomas.

Recently, a novel monoclonal antibody to vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 (VEGFR-3), a tyrosine kinase receptor expressed almost exclusively by lymphatic endothelium in the adult, has been shown to react with a small number of cases of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and cutaneous lymphangiomas. We sought to extend these studies to a large number of well-characterized vascular neoplasms to evaluate diagnostic uses of this antibody and to determine whether it defines them in a thematic fashion. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections from 70 vascular tumors were immunostained with antibod

Intralesional embolization for a hypervascular lesion of the nasal vestibule.

INTRODUCTION: Lobular capillary hemangioma is benign vascular lesion commonly encountered in the head and neck region. Although surgical excision remains the standard treatment, management may be challenging in postoperative settings or cosmetically sensitive areas such as the nasal vestibule. We present a case of a hypervascular nasal vestibular lesion with clinical and radiological features consistent with lobular capillary hemangioma, managed with intralesional foam embolization. CASE SUMMARY: A 40-year-old woman presented with unilateral nasal obstruction and left alar swelling. MRI showe

Dynamic distribution of basic fibroblast growth factor during epulis formation: an immunohistochemical study in an enhanced healing process of the gingiva.

Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is thought to play an important role in wound healing. However, its histological localization, both in normal and pathological conditions in the oral mucosa, has not been well documented. We have studied the immunolocalization of bFGF in normal gingiva and gingival epulis specimens corresponding to different organizing stages. In normal gingiva, bFGF was detected in subpopulations of macrophages, mast cells and most endothelial cells in the lamina propria. Granulation tissue in epulides was histopathologically classified into six organizing stages. In stag

Involvement of cell wall glucans in the genesis and persistence of the inflammatory reaction caused by the fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.

The role of cell wall polysaccharides in leucocyte recruitment and granuloma formation in paracoccidioidomycosis was investigated. The inflammatory cells recruitment to the peritoneal cavity in rats inoculated with cell wall fraction (CW-265 or F1-265) from an avirulent strain of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (Pb265), was greater than that observed for the cell wall fraction (CW-HC or F1-HC) recovered from the virulent strain (PbHC). Moreover, the inoculation of F1-HC and F1-265 into the subcutaneous layer of mice resulted in the formation of nodular and not progressive granulomatous lesions.

Dermatoscopy of Vascular Lesions.

Cutaneous vascular lesions (VLs) represent a very common reason for dermatologic consultation for patients. In most cases, VLs are benign and self-limiting. However, because they often mimic malignant skin tumors, their correct and prompt identification is very important in daily practice. Dermoscopy may play a key role in achieving that purpose. This article reviews current knowledge of dermoscopic features of the most frequent VLs.

Peripheral odontogenic fibroma: an uncommonly overviewed lesion.

Peripheral odontogenic fibroma is considered a gingival tumor characterized by a proliferation of relatively cellular fibrous or fibromyxomatous connective tissue which exhibits variable amounts of odontogenic epithelium and sometimes foci of calcification in the form of dentinoid, cementicles, or bone. It is considered the extraosseous counterpart of central odontogenic fibroma. This lesion usually is presented as a focal swelling in the gingiva, occurring in a wide age range, and the anterior region of the gingiva is the most frequent anatomic site. Conservative local excision is the treatme

Nail tumors.

Most neoplasms of the nail apparatus have different clinical appearances, courses, and biological behaviors as compared with similar tumors located elsewhere on the skin. Some of these tumors are unique to the nail, such as onychomatricoma. As a general rule, benign lesions respect the general architecture of the nail apparatus, whereas malignant ones are destructive. Our review covers the most common nail tumors, from benign ones to the most frequent nail malignancy, the squamous cell carcinoma, which actually is the greatest simulator. We will also discuss new approaches to the diagnosis and

Oral health during pregnancy.

Oral health care in pregnancy is often avoided and misunderstood by physicians, dentists, and patients. Evidence-based practice guidelines are still being developed. Research suggests that some prenatal oral conditions may have adverse consequences for the child. Periodontitis is associated with preterm birth and low birth weight, and high levels of cariogenic bacteria in mothers can lead to increased dental caries in the infant. Other oral lesions, such as gingivitis and pregnancy tumors, are benign and require only reassurance and monitoring. Every pregnant woman should be screened for oral

Prevalence of pregnancy related oral granuloma in a Nigerian population group and the possible role of contraceptives.

A clinicopathological survey on pregnancy related tumours was carried out on 400 randomly selected pregnant Nigerian women. Fifteen (15) cases of pregnancy granuloma or 'epulis gravidanum' were found. Of these subjects, 287 representing 71.8 percent were on birth control before conception, while 113 or 28.2 percent were not. Nine (9) cases of pregnancy tumour were found in the group on birth control pills and six (6) in the group not on birth control representing an incidence of 3.1 and 5.3 percent respectively. Literature review indicate a general incidence of between 0-2.5 percent. Five of t

Nail pathology.

When dealing with nails, pathologic examination is often indispensable to reach an accurate diagnosis. This requires a biopsy correctly performed by the dermatologist, a specimen correctly handled in the pathology lab, and a pathologist with good knowledge of the various nail conditions. The normal nail histology is first described in this paper. The pathologic aspects of melanocytic lesions, nonmelanocytic tumors of the nail apparatus, inflammatory nail conditions, and onychomycosis are then considered, together with their main differential diagnoses.

Congenital and infantile skin lesions affecting the hand and upper extremity, part 1: vascular neoplasms and malformations.

Many dermatologic conditions may be present on a newborn infant's upper extremity that can evoke concern for parents and/or primary caregivers. Although the pediatrician typically remains the first care provider, often these children are referred to specialists to diagnose and treat these lesions. Hand surgeons should be familiar with different infantile skin lesions on an upper extremity. Some lesions are best observed, whereas others require treatment with nonoperative measures, lasers, or surgical interventions. A 2-part series is presented to aid the hand surgeon in becoming familiar with

Peripheral calcifying odontogenic cyst in maxillary anterior gingiva: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Calcifying odontogenic cysts (Gorlin cysts) most commonly present centrally and have only rarely been reported in peripheral locations. The purpose of this report is to describe a new case of peripheral calcifying odontogenic cyst (PCOC) occurring in the anterior maxillary gingiva and to review the management and differential diagnosis of such a lesion. METHODS: A 37-year-old female presented with a long-standing submucosal nodule on the gingiva between the maxillary central incisors, with asymptomatic growth over the last three years. Following an initial incisional biopsy, a dia
