Heartfulness Meditation-induced State and Trait Effects on Long-term, Short-term and Non-meditators Using Connectivity Analysis: An EEG Study on Prefrontal Cortex.

BACKGROUND: Heartfulness meditation (HM) is a heart-based meditation practice that features a unique yogic transmission that involves transfer of subtle energy from a certified, experienced meditator to an aspirant. PURPOSE: This study was conducted on HM practice to assess the state (momentary changes during meditation result in temporary physiological and neurological shifts) and trait (long-term personality changes developed with experience) effects on the brain using electroencephalogram (EEG) signal analysis. METHODS: Thirty-four participants were recruited into three groups (long-term

Huntington Study Group's Neuropsychology Working Group: Implementing Non-Motor Diagnostic Criteria.

BACKGROUND: The clinical diagnosis of manifest Huntington's disease (HD) relies on a high level of clinical confidence (99% confidence) of HD-consistent motor signs. Longitudinal data have reliably identified cognitive and behavioral dysfunction predating clinical motor diagnosis by up to 15 years. Reliance on motor signs to establish a diagnosis of HD increases risk of early misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis. Clinical neuropsychologists are uniquely positioned to advise on the clinical application of the Movement Disorder Society Task Force's recently proposed non-motor diagnostic criteria fo

[Group cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder with and without agoraphobia: an effectiveness study].

OBJECTIVE: Although numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of both individual and group cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy (CBT), many authors have questioned the translation of these interventions into routine clinical practice. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of group CBT in patients diagnosed with panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in routine clinical practice. METHODS: The study involved 96 patients diagnosed according to the DSM-IV criteria. Treatment consisted of 10 psychotherapy sessions of 2 hours each in a local health authority. A batter

Neuropsychological status in children after repair of acyanotic congenital heart disease.

OBJECTIVES: The majority of previous studies that described the neuropsychological effects of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in children were performed after surgery in infancy for complex congenital heart disease (CHD). We sought to limit confounding variables and isolate potential independent effects of CPB by describing neuropsychological function in school-aged children after repair of acyanotic CHD. METHODS: This was a prospective study of patients who were aged 5 to 18 years and undergoing repair of acyanotic CHD. Neuropsychological testing battery included assessment of intelligence, mem

Determinants of breast self-examination after a benign biopsy.

Although breast self-examination (BSE) continues to be recommended as an adjunct to clinical screening techniques for the early detection of breast cancer, little is known about events that might negatively influence long-term adherence. The primary aim of this investigation was to determine if regularity of BSE would decline after a benign breast biopsy. Analyses are based on 655 women: 83 women who self-discovered the breast problem by BSE, 179 women in whom the problem was discovered by the health care system, and a control group of 393 women who had no history of breast problems. Frequency

The primary care physician workforce in Massachusetts: implications for the workforce in rural, small town America.

CONTEXT: Small towns across the United States struggle to maintain an adequate primary care workforce. PURPOSE: To examine factors contributing to physician satisfaction and retention in largely rural areas in Massachusetts, a state with rural pockets and small towns. METHODS: A survey mailed in 2004-2005 to primary care physicians, practicing in areas designated by the state as rural, queried respondents about personal and practice characteristics as well as workforce concerns. Predictors of satisfaction and likelihood of remaining in current or rural practice somewhere were assessed. FIND

Impact of interprofessional blended learning with low-fidelity simulation on neonatal resuscitation skills among interns: a quasi-experimental study in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Despite the national rollout of the Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) program, neonatal mortality due to birth asphyxia remains a major challenge in Tanzania. Evidence shows that there is inadequate competence (including knowledge, skills, and attitudes) in newborn resuscitation among medical and nursing interns as they transition into practice. The traditional method of a one-day instructor-led HBB model provides little hands-on practice. Integrating low-fidelity simulation with blended learning may contribute to better transfer of learning and offer a more sustainable model for skills

Testing the Water: Osteoporosis Management in Primary Care.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a common bone condition in the United Kingdom (UK). The risk of osteoporosis and fragility fractures increases with age, and with the ageing population in the UK, the incidence is growing. It is imperative that General Practitioners (GPs) correctly diagnose and manage their patients with osteoporosis. To improve the awareness, a treatment pathway was developed in secondary care to guide local GPs. The aim of this study was to investigate whether patients at a GP practice with a population of 14,000 have been appropriately identified, coded as osteoporosis, treated

Recommendations for the management of biofilm: a consensus document.

The potential impact of biofilm on healing in acute and chronic wounds is one of the most controversial current issues in wound care. A significant amount of laboratory-based research has been carried out on this topic, however, in 2013 the European Wound Management Association (EWMA) pointed out the lack of guidance for managing biofilms in clinical practice and solicited the need for guidelines and further clinical research. In response to this challenge, the Italian Nursing Wound Healing Society (AISLeC) initiated a project which aimed to achieve consensus among a multidisciplinary and mult

Acknowledging Advances, Addressing Gaps: Commentary on the Revised AGPA Clinical Practice Guidelines.

This review evaluates the second edition of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Group Psychotherapy (American Group Psychotherapy Association, 2025), the first major revision since 2008. The scope of this undertaking-expanding from 10 sections to 11 chapters, integrating a substantially grown evidence base, and addressing transformations in how group treatment is delivered-is formidable, and the authors' commitment to this work deserves genuine recognition. The update substantially reconceptualizes six chapters, integrates multicultural and social justice content throughout, and adds a new ch

Rh(III)-Catalyzed, N-Amino-Directed C-H Coupling with 2-Oxo-3-butynoates to Benzodiazepines.

The current state-of-the-art organic synthesis wisdom is centered on functional groups as the origin of reactivity for the projection and development of forward conversion reactivity modalities. This forward reactivity exploration synthetic practice has allowed for the productive discovery of reactivity step sequences that emerge from the functional group of interest. Herein, we report both forward reactivity exploration and backward reactivity exploration as expansive synthetic practices for the comprehensive projection and development of both forward conversion reactivity and backward conver

Complications associated with IUD use in a family practice setting.

This study compares the complication rate of intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUD) with other contraceptive measures in a residency practice. The study population included 220 randomly selected women who had IUDs inserted by residents over a five-year period. One hundred similarly selected women started on birth control pills (BCP) were used as a control group. Of the IUD patients, 8.6 percent developed pelvic inflammatory disease vs 2 percent of the BCP patients. The incidence of gonorrhea was not significantly different between the two groups: 8.2 percent for the IUD groups vs 7 percent f
