Realization of masticatory movement by 3-dimensional simulation of the temporomandibular joint and the masticatory muscles.

Masticatory muscles are closely involved in mastication, pronunciation, and swallowing, and it is therefore important to study the specific functions and dynamics of the mandibular and masticatory muscles. However, the shortness of muscle fibers and the diversity of movement directions make it difficult to study and simplify the dynamics of mastication. The purpose of this study was to use 3-dimensional (3D) simulation to observe the functions and movements of each of the masticatory muscles and the mandible while chewing. To simulate the masticatory movement, computed tomographic images were

MRI can assess glenoid bone loss after shoulder luxation: inter- and intra-individual comparison with CT.

OBJECTIVE: Computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard for evaluating glenoid bone loss in patients with glenohumeral dislocations. The aim of this study was to verify if magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can quantify the area of bone loss without any significant difference from CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three patients, who had experienced one or more post-traumatic unilateral glenohumeral dislocations, underwent MRI and CT. MR and multiplanar reconstruction CT images were acquired in the sagittal plane: the glenoid area and the area of bone loss were calculated using the PICO method

Assessment of patient dose and image quality for cardiac CT with breast shields.

Breast shielding can reduce dose to the female breast, a radiosensitive organ receiving significant radiation during computed tomography (CT) chest examinations, particularly in cardiac CT, where Electrocardiogram dose modulation currently precludes the use of radial dose modulation to reduce breast dose. However, breast shields may produce artefacts affecting interpretation of coronary arteries. This study explores the dose savings and the effect of breast shields on image quality with torso and CT dose index body phantoms and an organ dose calculator. Change in dose calculated: 53-63 % (fema

Magnetic resonance imaging sialolithography: direct visualization of calculi in the submandibular gland using susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) at 3 Tesla.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sialolithography is a useful technique for evaluating acute and chronic sialadenitis. However, its major weakness is that stones are not imaged directly. We have developed an MRI technique that allows specific identification and localization of calculi within the submandibular salivary gland or duct. This test is noninvasive and does not require ionizing radiation or a sialogogue. By using 3-dimensional susceptibility-weighted imaging, one can probe MRI signal phase changes. Corrected positive filtered phase and magnitude images, acquired using susceptibility-w

Nasal and ethmoidal alterations in anterior synostotic plagiocephaly.

BACKGROUND: Nasal deviation plays an important role in plagiocephaly nosography, and it is frequent in plagiocephaly and objectivable both in early treated patients and in those patients who did not undergo any surgical correction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The group analyzed consisted of 12 patients affected by anterior synostotic plagiocephaly. All of them had reached the end of growth. A morphological analysis was made by using anthropometry. All patients were asked to undergo computed tomography, and all the scans were then reconstructed into three-dimensional models using a dedicated softwar

How well does structural equation modeling reveal abnormal brain anatomical connections? An fMRI simulation study.

Many brain disorders result from alterations in the strength of anatomical connectivity between different brain regions. This study investigates whether such alterations can be revealed by examining differences in interregional effective connectivity between patient and normal subjects. We applied one prominent effective connectivity method - Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) - to simulated functional MRI (fMRI) timeseries from a neurobiologically realistic network model in which the anatomical connectivity is known and can be manipulated. These timeseries were simulated for two task conditio

Analysis of manual segmentation in paranasal CT images.

Manual segmentation is often used for evaluation of automatic or semi-automatic segmentation. The purpose of this paper is to describe the inter and intraindividual variability, the dubiety of manual segmentation as a gold standard and to find reasons for the discrepancy. We realized two experiments. In the first one ten ENT surgeons, ten medical students and one engineer outlined the right maxillary sinus and ethmoid sinuses manually on a standard CT dataset of a human head. In the second experiment two participants outlined maxillary sinus and ethmoid sinuses five times consecutively. Manual

Closed-loop small-bowel obstruction: diagnostic patterns by multidetector computed tomography.

Multidetector computed tomography is a highly accurate method in evaluating high-grade intestinal obstruction. Closed-loop obstruction is a relatively uncommon subcategory of small-bowel obstruction; however, it is associated with a high risk of vascular impairment and is, therefore, important to diagnose accurately. Closed-loop obstruction is often caused by conditions such as internal hernias, congenital bands, postoperative adhesions, and malrotation. The purpose of this article is to review the imaging features of closed-loop bowel obstruction and various underlying conditions. Special emp

Injuries to the carpal bones revisited.

Falls on the outstretched hand, with resultant pain in the carpal region, account for a significant number of referrals to emergency rooms worldwide. Not only do they represent a significant proportion of the radiological workload arising from emergency rooms, interpretation of the images acquired is often difficult due to the complex anatomy of this region, compounded by an inability to obtain adequate views due to patient discomfort. Often, despite apparently normal radiological examinations, patient discomfort persists, prompting a need for further imaging. It is vital that the radiologist

In vitro evaluation of coronary stents and in-stent stenosis using a dynamic cardiac phantom and a 64-detector row CT scanner.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to examine the ability of a 64-slice MDCT to detect in-stent stenoses in an ex vivo model of coronary stents. METHODS: Five different stents (Liberté, Boston Scientific; Driver, Medtronic; Multi-Link Vision, Guidant; Taxus Express, Boston Scientific; Cypher, Cordis) were examined using a dynamic cardiac phantom. The stents were pulled over a vessel model that consists of a polymer tube with diameters of 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 mm and four different degrees of stenoses (0%; 30%; 50%; 70-80%). This model was moved with a rate of 60 bpm to mimic cardiac motion. T

[Principles of analysis for sacroiliac joints imaging].

Interpretation of sacroiliac joints imaging is uneasy. Simultaneous erosions, hyperostosis, and ankylosis together make the diagnosis of inflammatory lesions. Articular abnormalities may also be induced by mechanical stress or ligament ossifications. Distribution of the lesions can help to establish a precise diagnosis. Inflammatory lesions may be located in any part of the articulation, including the posterior and inferior part. Mechanical lesions as in osteitis condensans ilii are commonly located in the anterior middle part of the joint. Ligament ossification in case of idiopathic skeletal

Computed tomography in various fields outside medicine.

CT has been widely used for non-medical purposes, for which, as in medicine, it has the advantage of being non-destructive and having a high spatial and density resolution. CT may help to generate 3-D views which could otherwise be obtained only by dissecting the object. There is almost no limitation with regard to X-ray exposure and scanning time. Dedicated techniques, e.g., rotating the specimen between stationary tube and detector, have been developed. Micro-CT may provide a spatial resolution up to 1 microm. Fields where CT has been successfully applied are archaeology, soil science, the t

Limitations of osseous genioplasty in relation to the displacement distance: a computer-based comparative study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the contact surface area (CSA) between bony segments after performing 4 different osteotomy techniques for genioplasty. STUDY DESIGN: Virtual genioplasties were done in terms of sliding or chin-shield genioplasty and 1- or 2-tiered genioplasty on computed tomography (CT) data from 42 patients. Advancement or setback genioplasty was simulated at 3, 5, 8, and 10 mm. The resulting bony contact areas were calculated by using software. RESULTS: No statistically differences were found between both 2-tiered techniques at any displacement distance. Sig

Uncertainty-Guided Iterative Contrastive Fusion for Reliable Survival Prediction in Rectal Cancer.

Integrating multimodal radiological images and clinical data is critical for survival prediction in rectal cancer. However, existing methods often lack sufficient consideration of 1) modality heterogeneity (caused by rectal peristalsis, noise artifacts, and missing modalities) and 2) site heterogeneity (caused by different imaging protocols and patient populations). These factors hinder the model from capturing reliable cross-modal relationships and adapting to distribution shifts across clinical sites. In this work, we propose UICSurv, a novel multimodal Survival prediction framework highligh

Automated Classification of Body MRI Sequences Using Convolutional Neural Networks.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Multi-parametric MRI (mpMRI) studies of the body are routinely acquired in clinical practice. However, a standardized naming convention for MRI protocols and series does not exist currently. Conflicts in the series descriptions present in the DICOM headers arise due to myriad MRI scanners from various manufacturers used for imaging, wide variations in imaging practices across institutions, and technologist preferences. These conflicts affect the hanging protocol, which dictates the arrangement of sequences for the reading radiologist. At present, clinician supervision

Assessing the reliability of MRI-CBCT image registration to visualize temporomandibular joints.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate image quality of two methods of registering MRI and CBCT images of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), particularly regarding TMJ articular disc-condyle relationship and osseous abnormality. METHODS: MR and CBCT images for 10 patients (20 TMJs) were obtained and co-registered using two methods (non-guided and marker guided) using Mirada XD software (Mirada Medical Ltd, Oxford, UK). Three radiologists independently and blindly evaluated three types of images (MRI, CBCT and registered MRI-CBCT) at two times (T1 and T2) on two criteria: (1) quality of MRI-CBCT registration

PET-guided biopsy with needle navigation facilitates diagnosis of angiosarcoma in neurofibromatosis type 1.

Malignant degeneration frequently arises from preexisting plexiform neurofibroma in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Image guided biopsy for diagnostic purposes, such as with CT guidance, can be technically challenging in these patients, as CT cannot distinguish malignant from benign areas within the same tumor. Navigation with multi-modality (PET, CT, and ultrasound) image fusion facilitated the successful biopsy and diagnosis of angiosarcoma arising from a pelvic neurofibroma in a patient with NF1. Successful targeting assisted treatment selection in this case. This novel naviga

Fast high-spatial-resolution MRI of the ankle with parallel imaging using GRAPPA at 3 T.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to compare an autocalibrating parallel imaging technique at 3 T with standard acquisitions at 3 and 1.5 T for small-field-of-view imaging of the ankle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRI of the ankle was performed in three fresh human cadaver specimens and three healthy volunteers. Axial and sagittal T1-weighted, axial fat-saturated T2-weighted, and coronal intermediate-weighted fast spin-echo sequences, as well as a fat-saturated spoiled gradient-echo sequence, were acquired at 1.5 and 3 T. At 3 T, reduced data sets were reconstructed using a generalized autoc

Deformable registration of prone and supine colons for CT colonography.

CT colonography (CTC) is a non-invasive technique for detecting colorectal polyps and colon cancer. Through the addition of the prone scanning with the original supine scanning, the possibility of detecting the polyps is increased. The registration process for this application requires the comparison between the prone and supine colons for diagnosis. A level-set representation of the object boundary using a distance map is presented in this paper as an input to demons registration algorithm for supine and prone CT colonography image data. After first aligning the colon volumes based on the pat
