Relation of antisocial and psychopathic traits to suicide-related behavior among offenders.

Offenders with antisocial traits are relatively likely to attempt suicide, largely because they are more likely to have high negative emotionality and low constraint. Among 682 male offenders, we tested whether negative emotionality, low constraint, and also substance use problems mediated any relationship between antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and psychopathy on the one hand, and suicide-related behavior (SRB) and ideation on the other. ASPD and the impulsivity/lifestyle features of psychopathy weakly predicted SRB. High negative emotionality and low constraint (but not substance use)

Treatment of paraphilia with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonists.

Up to now there have been no published results of therapy of paraphilia (for example, pedophilia or sadism) and sexual aggressive impulsiveness with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists in the German-speaking countries. After a short introduction about physiologic features and the present state of investigations in treatment of paraphilia with LHRH agonists we describe 11 patients who were treated with the LHRH agonist Leuprolide Acetate over a period of 12 months. The patients showed no tendency toward sexually aggressive behavior and reported an evident reduction of penile e

Conceptual issues in trichotillomania, a prototypical impulse control disorder.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are characterized by irresistible urges to perform acts that result in a reduction of tension and possibly gratification, but also have negative consequences. Trichotillomania, an ICD, is characterized by a recurrent failure to resist impulses to pull out one's hair, resulting in noticeable hair loss. Limited information is available about structural and neurochemical differences in individuals with trichotillomania. Cognitive behavioral techniques are promising treatments for trichotillomania. Pharmacologic treatments have focussed on clomipramine and venlafax

Impulsivity and sexual compulsivity - a comparison of untreated individuals with CSBD, individuals undergoing long-term treatment for CSBD, and a healthy control group.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) has been classified in the eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as an impulse control disorder. Impulsivity, risk-taking, and compulsivity play an important role in CSBD. AIMS: The present study aims to examine impulsivity and sexual compulsivity by comparing three groups: untreated individuals with CSBD, individuals undergoing long-term treatment for CSBD, and a healthy control group. The study aims to use questionnaires and computerized tasks measuring risk-taking and delay discounting in order to i

Effectiveness of transcranial direct current stimulation on emotional instability and impulsivity in atypical depression and bipolar II disorder.

Atypical depressive disorder and bipolar disorder often present with symptoms like emotional instability and impulsive behaviors. Various treatments, both pharmaceutical and non-pharmacological, are employed to manage these conditions. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a modern treatment option that has shown promise with minimal side effects. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of tDCS on emotional instability and impulsivity in individuals with atypical depression and bipolar type II. This study utilized a semi-experimental, pre-test-post-test design with a control g…

The role of impulsivity and binge eating in outpatients with overweight or obesity: an EEG temporal discounting study.

BACKGROUND: Binge eating (BE) is associated with a range of cognitive control deficits related to impulsivity, including lower response inhibition, preference for immediate gratification, and maladaptive decision-making. The aim was to investigate whether impulsivity and BE may interact with the decision process and underlying brain activity in outpatients with overweight or obesity who are starting a treatment to achieve weight loss. METHODS: A sample of 26 treatment-seeking outpatients with overweight or obesity was evaluated for impulsivity, BE, and temporal discounting rates. Impulsivity

Efficacy of neuroleptic medication in pervasive developmental disorders of childhood.

A number of studies pertaining to the use of antipsychotic medication in the treatment of pervasively disordered children are reviewed. The drugs examined are chlorpromazine, haloperidol, thioridazine, thiothixene, trifluoperazine, lithium, and other miscellaneous agents. Medication side effects are also reviewed with particular attention to extrapyramidal symptoms and tardive dyskinesia. Although methodological problems complicate the interpretation of the studies, the results support the use of antipsychotic medication in this population. The agents do not have the specificity for psychotic

[Joy riding: multiple criminal car rides in an intoxicated state in relation to dyssocial personality with addictive tendencies].

Going out from the case report of a young unskilled worker, the author introduces a little known behavioral disorder, named "joy riding". This highly problematic pattern of misbehavior includes the stealing of usually high-powered motorcars in order to take fast and joyful trips without any goal and leaving them anywhere in a more or less damaged state. As our case report shows, this special behavior sometimes develops features of an addiction and thereby similarities to addictive behaviors like pathological gambling, kleptomania, pyromania and others. Rightly, we find in literature several st

What impact can brain stimulation interventions have on borderline personality disorder?

INTRODUCTION: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder characterized by emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, neuropsychological impairment, and interpersonal instability, presenting with multiple psychiatric comorbidities, functional disability and reduced life expectancy due suicidal behaviors. AREAS COVERED: In this perspective, the authors explore the application of noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) (rTMS, tDCS, and MST) in BPD individuals by considering a symptom-based approach, focusing on general BPD psychopathology, impulsivity and neuropsychological impairme

Factors associated with lifetime suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in outpatients with substance use disorders.

Risks factors for suicide are multiple and highly prevalent in addicted patients (previous suicide attempts, substance abuse, impulsivity, history of sexual abuse and other factors). The aim of this study is to identify and to compare the clinical and socio-demographic profile of SUD outpatients with lifetime suicidal behavior (previous suicidal ideation and/or suicide attempts) and to analyze the factors related to it. A retrospective cohort study of 696 addicted patients, according to DSM-IV-TR criteria (APA, 2000) were collected from the Addiction Unit of Vall d'Hebron University Hospital.

Autism and anxiety in males with fragile X syndrome: an exploratory analysis of neurobehavioral profiles from a parent survey.

Although it is suspected that anxiety modifies the clinical presentation of autism in fragile X syndrome (FXS), neuropsychiatric co-morbidity profiles of these two disorders have not been extensively studied. The National Fragile X Survey was completed for 1,027 males with FXS, for whom yes/no information regarding the presence of several disorders is provided. Although the survey exhibited limited depth and lacked validation by standardized measures, this exploratory study was conducted to take advantage of the data as an opportunity for identifying future lines of inquiry. We addressed the f

Astrotactin 2 (ASTN2) regulates emotional and cognitive functions by affecting neuronal morphogenesis and monoaminergic systems.

Astrotactin2 (ASTN2) regulates neuronal migration and synaptic strength through the trafficking and degradation of surface proteins. Deletion of ASTN2 in copy number variants has been identified in patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism spectrum disorder in copy number variant (CNV) analysis. Disruption of ASTN2 is a risk factor for these neurodevelopmental disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, the importance of ASTN2 in physiological functions remains poorly understood. To eluci

Hypersexuality Addiction and Withdrawal: Phenomenology, Neurogenetics and Epigenetics.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Hypersexuality is now part of the DSM-V and has been defined as abnormally increased sexual activity. Epidemiological and clinical studies have shown that this non-paraphilic condition consists of "excessive" sexual behaviors and disorders accompanied by personal distress and social and medical morbidity. Hypersexual disorder is conceptualized as primarily a non-paraphilic sexual desire disorder with impulsivity. Pathophysiological perspectives include dysregulation of sexual arousal and desire, sexual impulsivity, sexual addiction, and sexual compulsivity. The nucleus accumbens, situated with

The association between earlier age of first drink, disinhibited personality, and externalizing psychopathology in young adults.

Earlier age of first drink (AFD) of alcohol is associated with higher rates of alcohol abuse and dependence as well as a range of other externalizing problems. This study tested the hypotheses that in young adults earlier AFD is associated with [1] the common variance among externalizing problems (lifetime alcohol, marijuana, other drug, childhood conduct, and adult antisocial behavior problems) rather than being uniquely associated with alcohol problems, and [2] the disinhibited personality traits of social deviance and impulsivity, and that the association between earlier AFD and externalizi

AV nodal function during atrial fibrillation: the role of electrotonic modulation of propagation.

The irregular ventricular rhythm that accompanies atrial fibrillation (AF) has been explained in terms of concealed conduction within the AV node (AVN). However, the cellular basis of concealed conduction in AF remains poorly understood. Our hypothesis is that electrotonic modulation of AVN propagation by atrial impulses blocked repetitively within the AVN is responsible for changes in function that lead to irregular ventricular rhythms in patients with AF. We have tested this idea using two different simplified computer ionic models of the AVN. The first ("black-box") model consisted of three

Orbitofrontal cortex functional connectivity changes in patients with binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa.

We aimed to define the shared and unshared functional neurobiological underpinnings of binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN). These disorders both involve loss of control over binge eating, but differ based on purging behavior and body image distortion. BED and BN have also been found to show differences in brain activation patterns in reward sensitivity. We enrolled 13 and 12 drug-naive and medication-free women with BED and BN, respectively, and 22 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. We performed an orbitofrontal cortex (OFC)-seeded resting-state whole brain functional conn
