Targeting CD4⁺ T cell infiltration: mechanisms and therapeutic insights into CD4⁺ T cell transmigration across the blood-brain barrier in acute ischemic stroke.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) serves as a physical barrier of the central nervous system, characterized by selective permeability and immune isolation. It plays a critical role in transporting essential nutrients for normal neuronal metabolism while preventing the entry of toxic substances into the brain. Following acute ischemic stroke, the integrity of the BBB is compromised, leading to extensive T-cell infiltration into the brain. These infiltrating T cells influence BBB permeability and can exert either protective or detrimental effects on brain tissue. Current research has largely focused

Women's Strategies for Navigating Disclosure of a History of Sexual Trauma with Current Intimate Partners.

The experience of sexual trauma is common, especially for women. One way to mitigate the adverse social and behavioral health outcomes associated with sexual trauma is through the provision of social support. However, before social support can be provided, there is a need for the survivor to disclose to close others, including romantic partners. This study aimed to understand how women with a history of sexual trauma navigate disclosing these experiences with a current intimate partner. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 41 women with a history of sexual trauma who describ

Recent and Lifetime Prevalence of Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence Among Women in Substance Use Treatment.

BACKGROUND: The majority of women in substance use treatment report a lifetime trauma history, including sexual violence (SV) and intimate partner violence (IPV). However, little is known about more recent and various forms of SV and IPV victimization among this population. The present study sought to determine the prevalence and nature of recent and lifetime SV and IPV among women in a predominantly rural community seeking treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs). METHODS: A total of 90 women were recruited from residential and outpatient SUD treatment facilities. Participants completed

Unraveling Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Functions Through Network Analysis and Revealing Their Triangular Relationship With Psychosocial Factors and Personality Traits.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) imposes a significant burden on adolescents, making it essential to understand its underlying functions to develop effective interventions. This study aims to investigate the NSSI functional network and clarify the "psychosocial factors-personality-behavior" chain to inform the development of interventions for NSSI. METHODS: A total of 265 psychiatric inpatients aged 16-25 years with NSSI participated in this cross-sectional study. Network analysis was used to examine relationships among NSSI functions, and mediation analysis explored the pathways f

Men with Various Subtypes of Premature Ejaculation Differ in the Perceived Cause of Their Problem.

How men perceive the cause for their premature ejaculation (PE) impacts their understanding of their problem, likelihood of seeking treatment, and acceptance of and adherence to a treatment protocol. This study aimed to understand men's perceived reasons (attributions) for their PE, to explore differences across PE subtypes having different developmental progressions, and to identify covariates that might help explain subtype differences. 446 online survey respondents who indicated "ejaculating before desired" and met inclusion criteria were verified as having "definite" PE using an abridged v

"I feel full with shame": A qualitative perspective on gastric interoceptive sensibility.

BACKGROUND: "Am I hungry? Did I overeat at lunch?" Gastric interoception - the sensing, interpretation, and regulation of signals from the gastrointestinal system - is central to daily behavior and homeostasis. Dysfunctional gastric interoception has been proposed as a maintenance factor in both eating disorders and gastrointestinal symptoms. However, no qualitative research has explored how individuals across these groups, and the general population, subjectively experience gastrointestinal signals, known as gastric interoceptive sensibility. This study aimed to investigate how gastric sensat

A Systematic Review of Factors Associated With Treatment Engagement and Outcome for Women in the Perinatal Period Receiving Individual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Depression, Anxiety, and Trauma-Related Disorders.

Depression, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders commonly occur in the perinatal period, with high rates of comorbidity, and potentially adverse outcomes for women and children. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment, however less than half of new mothers experiencing symptoms seek treatment. This review was focused on factors affecting treatment engagement and outcome in a clinical perinatal population. A mixed-methods systematic review was conducted according to Cochrane Collaboration Guidelines. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of individual CBT where a

A population-based screening program provides insights into the characteristics and behaviors of individuals who self-refer for gambling disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Since only around 10% of people with gambling disorder (GD) seek professional treatment or attend self-help groups, multiple strategies are needed to improve this rate. The proposal of the Behavioral Addictions Center 'Adcom' (Madrid, Spain) is one such strategy, a pioneering and innovative program aimed at the general population to identify people with addictions such as GD, in an attempt to offer them appropriate evidence-based treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed information obtained from the first 305 adults who voluntarily sought attention at Adcom for self-referr

Food intake enhances hippocampal sharp wave-ripples.

Effective regulation of energy metabolism is critical for survival. Metabolic control involves various nuclei within the hypothalamus, which receive information about the body's energy state and coordinate appropriate responses to maintain homeostasis, such as thermogenesis, pancreatic insulin secretion, and food-seeking behaviors. It has recently been found that the hippocampus, a brain region traditionally associated with memory and spatial navigation, is also involved in metabolic regulation. Specifically, hippocampal sharp wave-ripples (SWRs), which are high-frequency neural oscillations s

Unveiling the gendered abyss: exploring the case of women with lymphatic filariasis and the path to inclusive care in India.

INTRODUCTION: Lymphatic filariasis (LF), a neglected tropical disease (NTD), affects tropical regions marked by poor socioeconomic conditions and often results in non-curable filarial lymphedema. The impact of LF is often disproportionate, adversely affecting women due to a multitude of intersecting disadvantages. There has been little effort to understand the unique illness experience of women with LF. METHODS: To explore the interplay between gender and the illness experience of women afflicted with filarial lymphoedema, this qualitative study mapped the experience of 18 women and the perce

The influence of sex and gender factors on the modulation of vulnerability to addictions: a narrative review.

This narrative review identifies the sex- and gender-related factors that influence individual vulnerability to developing addictive disorders. Addiction arises from the complex interaction between neurobiological and psychosocial factors. Sex-based brain dimorphisms, shaped by genetic, hormonal, and epigenetic influences, lead to differences in neural circuits involved in reward, emotional regulation, and executive functioning. Pharmacokinetic differences, such as higher blood alcohol levels, faster nicotine metabolism, and slower μ-opioid receptor internalization in women, contribute to earl

Empathic communication skills training to reduce lung cancer stigma: Study protocol of a cluster randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Prior research demonstrates that nearly all (95 %) people with lung cancer (PwLC) report stigma, and approximately half (48 %) PwLC experience stigma during clinical encounters with oncology care providers (OCPs). When stigma is experienced in a medical context, it can have undesirable consequences including patients' delaying and underreporting of symptoms, misreporting of smoking behavior, and avoiding help-seeking such as psychosocial support and cessation counseling. Multi-level interventions are needed to prevent and mitigate lung cancer stigma. One promising intervention for
