Understanding Malaria Treatment Adherence in Rwanda: Implications for Artemisinin Resistance.

Prompt diagnosis and effective treatment are key malaria interventions that rely on community knowledge and adherence to treatment. With the emergence of artemisinin resistance in Rwanda, ensuring optimal malaria treatment practices within communities is essential. This study examined malaria knowledge, attitudes, and practices among febrile patients at government clinics to identify factors influencing malaria treatment practices. A cross-sectional study was conducted in six health facilities in moderate- to high-malaria-transmission areas of Rwanda. Patients or caregivers of children with fe

Malaria transmission-blocking drugs: implications and future perspectives.

As the world gets closer to eliminating malaria, the scientific community worldwide has begun to realize the importance of malaria transmission-blocking interventions. The onus of breaking the life cycle of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum predominantly rests upon transmission-blocking drugs because of emerging resistance to commonly used schizonticides and insecticides. This third part of our review series on malaria transmission-blocking entails transmission-blocking potential of preclinical transmission-blocking antimalarials and other non-malaria drugs/experimental compound

The effect of mild heat stress of different frequencies on the adaptability of Drosophila melanogaster females.

In natural populations, insects regularly face an adverse impact of different natures: harsh weather swings, lack of food resources, the insecticidal treatment. We studied the effect of repeated episodes of mild heat stress of different frequencies on stress resistance of Drosophila melanogaster females. We found out that the mild heat stress (38°С, 1 hr) repeated daily within 2 weeks resulted in (a) an increased activity of the dopamine (DA) metabolism enzymes, DA-dependent arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase and alkaline phosphatase, which suggested a decrease in DA level, and (b) an increase

Antimicrobial activity of extracts and phthalides occurring in Apiaceae plants.

Apiaceae plants exhibit a broad spectrum of activities, for instance, antithrombotic, hypotensive, antioxidant, and insecticidal. They also provide a source of phthalides, which display antimicrobial activity. Considering the fact of rising resistance of both bacteria and fungi against commonly used antibiotics, developing of new naturally derived compounds is undeniably attractive approach. To our best knowledge, there are no other reviews concerning this subject in the literature. In view of above, an attempt to summarize an antimicrobial potential of isolated compounds and extracts from Api

Effects of feeding calves genetically modified corn bt11: a clinico-biochemical study.

Genetically modified corn Bt11 is insect-resistant and expresses Cry1Ab toxin, an insecticidal protein, in kernels. Although Bt11 corn is considered safe based on animal performance, there are no reports available on the clinico-biochemical effects of feeding it to cattle. In this study, we evaluated the effects of feeding Bt11 to calves, using blood and ruminal clinico-biochemical parameters. Our three-month-long feeding experiment demonstrated that calves (n=6), fed with a ration containing 43.3% of Bt11 corn kernels as dry matter, did not develop any discernible clinical, hematological, bio

The treatment and control of parasitic diseases.

In many parts of world, transmission of malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum can no longer be controlled by insecticides. Furthermore, this species has developed an amazing capacity for resistance to polyvalent drugs. The advent of new drugs and the possibility of developing a vaccine offer some hope for control of falciparum malaria. The fact that the spread of many parasitic diseases is promoted by contaminated water supplies resulting from inadequate waste disposal raises important questions about the relevance of current research. The control of some endemic infections, like Chagas' diseas

Genetics, realized heritability and preliminary mechanism of spinosad resistance in Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae): an invasive pest from Pakistan.

The cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) has gained recognition as a key pest due to its invasive nature throughout the world. The P. solenopsis has a wide range of host plants and damages the cotton crop in various parts of the world. In view of the economic importance of this pest, a study on selection, inheritance and mechanism of spinosad resistance was conducted on P. solenopsis. Selection of field collected P. solenopsis for seven generations with spinosad resulted in a high resistance ratio of 282.45-fold. Genetic studies of spinosad resistance in

Efficacy of Bacillus sphaericus against larvae of malaria and filarial vectors: an analysis of early resistance detection.

We are reporting in this paper the control of Anopheles stephensi Liston and Culex quinquefasciatus Say using Bacillus sphaericus. These have been now considered with a practical solution because of its specific and prolonged killing action against mosquito larvae. The efficacy of B. sphaericus were assessed against all instars of A. stephensi and C. quinquefasciatus separately. During the experiments, the mortalities were not found highly effective in dose concentration of LC(90) 0.01 mg/l. It is recommended by the World Health Organizations in all instars of larvae of A. stephensi and C. qui

Prevalence and levels of permethrin resistance in Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Anoplura: Pediculidae) from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Permethrin has been used extensively for control of Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Anoplura: Pediculidae) in Argentina since 1990, resulting in the development of resistance to this and other pyrethroids. This resistance was first detected in some field populations in 1997. A survey for resistance in Buenos Aires in 2001 revealed significant resistance levels in lice on children at 24 of 26 (92.3%) schools. When compared with a previously unexposed reference population, resistance ratios (RRs) obtained by exposing the insects to filter papers impregnated with permethrin ranged from 2 to 60

Chlorfenapyr ear tags to control Haematobia irritans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) on cattle.

The efficacy of ear tags containing 30% chlorfenapyr (total tag weight=13g) to control natural Haematobia irritans (L.) infestations was evaluated for Holstein heifers in Rafaela, province of Santa Fe, Argentina. A group of heifers (TG) was treated with two ear tags (one tag per ear). A control group (ACG) was maintained in a paddock adjacent to the TG paddock and, a distant control group (DCG) was maintained 700m apart from the other groups. From day 4 to day 98 after treatment, H. irritans infestations of ACG were significantly higher (P<0.05, test of Kruskal-Wallis) than the corresponding i

Cytological approaches to simuliid biosystematics in relation to the epidemiology and control of human onchocerciasis.

This paper presents an overview of advances in cytological research on the biosystematics of vector simuliid complexes in the areas of identification, age grading, and the evolution of resistance in relation to the epidemiology and control of human onchocerciasis. Systematic theory is discussed and relevant examples are given to show its application in predicting and resolving current problems in species identification for New World and Old World vector complexes. These complexes include Simulium damnosum s.l. and S. neavei s.l. from Africa and S. exiguum s.l., S. metallicum s.l., S. ochraceum

Laval implant sutdies with Lucilia cuprina.

Semi-field studies, using the larval implant technique, show that sheep may be protected against resistant larvae of Lucilia cuprina by thorough jetting with chlorfenvinphos, diazinon, dichlofenthion and fenthion ethyl, but not bromophos ethyl, for the normal duration of waves of bodystrike in New South Wales. The standard method of assessing implant data is to be preferred to analyses based on average protection due to the extra time required for the latter procedure.

Prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum infection among pregnant women at first antenatal visit in post-Ebola Monrovia, Liberia.

BACKGROUND: Disruption of malaria control strategies during the West African 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic led to an increase in malaria-attributable mortality. However, recent data on malaria infection in vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, are lacking in this post-Ebola scenario. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum infection and of molecular markers of drug resistance among pregnant women attending antenatal care in Monrovia, capital of Liberia. METHODS: From October 2016 to June 2017, all pregnant women attending their first antenatal care v

C-Terminal Regions of Insecticidal Cry Toxins Form Amyloid Fibrils Affecting Metabolism of Insect Cells.

Crystal (Cry) toxins produced by Bacillus thuringiensis are highly specific insecticidal proteins that are widely used as biological insecticides and function through proteolytic activation in insect midguts, which generates a three-domain toxic core responsible for membrane disruption as well as cleaved N- and C-terminal domains. While the structure and function of this core have been extensively characterized, the fate of the cleaved C-terminal region remains poorly understood. Amyloids are protein fibrils with a characteristic cross-β structure that participate in a wide range of functions
