Turkey osteomyelitis complex (TOC) is defined by the US Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) to include normal-appearing processed turkey carcasses that contain lesions including green discoloration of the liver, arthritis/synovitis, soft-tissue abscesses, and osteomyelitis of the proximal tibia. The lesions are associated with many different opportunistic organisms, mainly Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, suggesting that TOC incidence may be influenced more by deficiencies in the host immune response rather than by the virulence of any one organism. This syndrome is primarily a di

BACKGROUND: Health care systems increasingly offer services to citizens through online portals, which have been found to be associated with patient satisfaction and better management of health concerns. Few studies have compared self-reported use with objectively documented portal use, especially among older adults.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine differences between documented and self-reported health portal use, and their associations with background variables and digital health literacy (DHL) among older adults.
METHODS: A cross-sectional telephone survey was conducted among 600 pa

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Organ preservation strategies for rectal cancer following neoadjuvant treatment require intensive endoscopic monitoring to detect early luminal recurrence. This is termed 'Watch and Wait' (WAW). Standard protocols commonly mandate flexible sigmoidoscopy every 3-4 months for 2 years. Digital proctoscopy with the LumenEye device has been shown to be a safe alternative that can be performed in an outpatient setting without the need for sedation and with less staffing requirements. The study objective is to evaluate the economic implications of using digital proctoscopy

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers are important sources of support for people with epilepsy (PWE), particularly in rural settings where formal services may be limited. However, less is known about caregivers' perceptions of the community and the informational and service conditions that support the inclusion of PWE.
OBJECTIVE: This study described caregivers' perceptions of epilepsy-related support and enabling environments and examined the caregiver and contextual factors associated with these perceptions in selected rural communities in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, South Africa.
METHODS: A cross-se

OBJECTIVES: In Türkiye, which hosts over 3.6 million Syrian refugees seeking safety and stability, reducing inequalities in access to adequate cancer care is pivotal and multifaceted. This study aims to critically discuss cancer care provided for refugees in Türkiye, focusing on the barriers they face, and the progress in addressing these challenges.
METHOD: This discussion paper employs an environmental scan approach. Literature searches in both English and Turkish were conducted using databases Web of Science, PubMed, TR Dizin, and MEDLINE, focusing on keywords such as "refugees," "cancer c

BACKGROUND: Urogenital schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium infection is a public health problem in Chad. Despite reports of urinary S. haematobium prevalence in endemic communities, research on the genital aspect of the disease, which disproportionately affects women, remains neglected especially given the contemporary geographical overlap with HIV/AIDS. This study was undertaken to establish baseline data on the awareness and perception of female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) among community inhabitants and healthcare professionals in southern Chad to inform effective policy dec

BACKGROUND: Obstetric emergencies remain a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) despite increased access to facility-based deliveries and emergency obstetric care. Improving outcomes requires not only life-saving clinical interventions but also effective health system strategies. This review mapped published evidence on strategies used to improve outcomes of obstetric emergencies in SSA.
OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to identify strategies reported in the literature to improve outcomes of obstetric emergencies in SSA.

BACKGROUND: Globally, 8 million babies are born with a congenital anomaly annually causing 240,000 neonatal deaths, with 95% disease burden in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Early neonatal screening, timely referral and management can lead to reduced disability and mortality. The WHO recommends employing lay health workers (HWs) as agents to promote health due to critical shortage of health service providers worldwide. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a learner-centered educational intervention to train lay HWs to screen neonates for external congenital anomalies and t

BACKGROUND: To address the public health concern of cervical cancer (CC), 194 countries committed to eliminate it at the initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO). We summarised quantitative results concerning CC elimination across these countries, including the progress in implementing three prevention levels (human papillomavirus [HPV] vaccination, CC screening, and treatment for patients with CC) and achievement of interim Global Strategy for Cervical Cancer Elimination targets.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, WHO, United Nations In

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth, defined as the death of a fetus at or after 22 weeks of gestation, remains a neglected public health issue, with approximately 2 million stillbirths occurring annually. Pakistan ranks among the top three countries with the highest number of stillbirths, yet progress in reducing stillbirth rates remains slower than regional and global averages. Despite the substantial burden, there is a lack of evidence on the prevalence, geographic variation, and predictors of stillbirths in Pakistan, particularly from marginalized settings.
METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal cohort

Background: The early postnatal period is defined as the first 48 h to 7 days after delivery. The early postnatal visit is especially the most critical time for the survival of mothers and newborns, particularly through early detection and management of postpartum complications. Despite the benefits, most mothers and newborns do not receive early postnatal care services from healthcare providers during the critical first few days after delivery. Objectives: This study is aimed at assessing the prevalence of early postnatal care utilization and associated factors among mothers who gave birth wi

OBJECTIVE: Voltage-gated potassium channel antibodies are implicated in limbic encephalitis and currently included in first-episode psychosis organic screening guidelines. Individuals with high-positive voltage-gated potassium channel titres most commonly present with neurological symptoms as well as sleep, cognitive, behaviour, psychosis and mood disturbance. The significance of low-positive voltage-gated potassium channel antibody titres in psychiatric patients is unclear and has not been previously examined. We aim to describe a statewide cohort of psychiatric patients with low- and high-po

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends rapid (≤ 7 days) or same-day initiation of antiretroviral treatment (ART) for HIV-positive patients. South Africa adopted this recommendation in 2017, but multiple clinic visits, long waiting times, and delays for laboratory tests remain common. Streamlined approaches to same-day initiation that allow the majority of patients to start ART immediately, while ensuring that patients who do require additional services receive them, are needed to achieve national and international treatment program goals.

OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary Embolism (PE) is an emergency condition that requires immediate treatment. As the symptoms and the risk factors are nonspecific, PE differential diagnosis is often required. Even if angio-CT is considered the gold standard for PE diagnosis, the frequent allergic condition and/or chronic renal failure of patients make, in most cases, not possible the use of contrast enhancement in emergency with even more increasing use of Lung Perfusion Scintigraphy (LPS), as a simple and fast examination with no preparation/contraindication. The aim of our study is to highlight the role o

BACKGROUND: Neonatal survival remains a major public health priority in many low and middle-income countries including Nepal, where the neonatal mortality rate (NMR) is 21 per 1,000 live births. To improve the neonatal health outcomes, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends scaling up coverage of quality antenatal care (ANC), skilled care at birth, immediate essential newborn care and resuscitation, postnatal care for mother and newborn, and specialized care of small and sick newborns. In this context, we aimed to estimate the potential impact of achieving the coverage targets for 35 i

Background/Objectives: Prompt identification of bloodborne pathogens and their antimicrobial resistance is critical for effective sepsis management. Direct molecular testing of blood offers faster results than blood culture; however, its clinical utility has been limited by suboptimal sensitivity and procedural complexity. This study evaluated an automated rapid multiplex PCR assay (BPID® system) and compared its performance with gold-standard methods. Methods: This was a preliminary, single-centre diagnostic-agreement study. Forty-three whole-blood samples were collected from patients with su
