The rising prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in poultry, particularly in chickens, poses a serious public health risk, as these pathogens can be transmitted to humans, causing difficult-to-treat gastroenteritis. Therefore, this study was designed to isolate and characterize multidrug-resistant bacteria in poultry chickens, as well as to determine the antibiotic susceptibility and plasmid profiles of resistant bacterial isolates. A total of 360 samples were collected from the cloacae, mouth, and nares of poultry-chickens and analyzed bacteriologically, with antibiotic susceptibil

El-Klila is a popular, traditional, spontaneously fermented Algerian cheese. Here, we report the identification and characterization of lactic acid bacteria isolated from El-Klila. A total of 26 isolates were identified, typed, and several phenotypic traits were determined to assess their potential as putative probiotics using a combination of pheno- and genotypic methods. Using initial phenotypic characterization followed by rep-PCR-fingerprinting, as well as 16S rRNA and recA gene sequencing, the isolates were identified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (73% of isolates), Lacticaseibacillus

Infectious microorganisms are among the major factors that complicate skin and wound infections, highlighting the need for novel antimicrobial agents of natural origin. In this in vitro study, the essential oils (EOs) of four Lamiaceae species (Mentha longifolia (L.) L., Mentha spicata L., Salvia reuteriana Boiss., and Teucrium polium L.) collected from Kashan, Iran, were evaluated for their chemical composition and antimicrobial activity against selected standard microbial strains. The aerial parts were collected from three regions (Cheshme Shahsavaran, Nushabad, and Sefidshahr), and EOs were

Accurate identification of bacterial pathogens is essential for effective clinical management; however, bacterial diagnosis remains challenging in routine microbiology laboratories, particularly in emergency settings and outbreak situations. Bacterial meningitis is a life-threatening condition associated with high morbidity and mortality, underscoring the need for sensitive and specific diagnostic approaches. Conventional culture-based methods often fail to identify causative agents, especially in samples with low bacterial load or fastidious organisms. This study aimed to evaluate next-genera

Ceftriaxone-resistant Enterobacterales remain a public health threat; contemporary data investigating their molecular epidemiology are limited. Five hundred consecutive ceftriaxone-resistant (MIC ≥ 4 µg/mL) Enterobacterales bloodstream isolates were collected between 2018 and 2022 from three Maryland hospitals. Broth microdilution confirmed antibiotic susceptibilities. Whole-genome sequencing identified extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and ampC genes both in bacterial chromosomes (c-ampC) and on plasmids (p-ampC). Mutations in promoter or attenuator regions of the Escherichia coli c-ampC g

The escalating prevalence of antibiotic-resistant infections and implant-related complications caused by biofilm-forming pathogens from the ESKAPE group, as identified by the World Health Organization (WHO), underscores the urgent need for innovative anti-biofilm strategies. Their occurrence on medical implants & prosthetic devices, as well as nosocomial infections in co-morbid patients, has become a global concern in the healthcare sector. In response, we investigated the efficacy of as-synthesized ZnS quantum dots (ZnS QD) and novel Au@ZnS nanoconjugates (Au@ZnS NC) against a spectrum of ESK

BACKGROUND: The tribe Proteeae comprises Proteus, Providencia, and Morganella species. TheseGram-negative rods are of concern in that they are involved in diverse human infections, particularly in hospital settings. In the last two decades, there has been a sharp increase in infections by multidrug-resistant (MDR) Proteeae. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to: (i) assess the prevalence of infections caused by tribe Proteeae, (ii)determine the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of the test isolates, and (iii) identify the underlying risk factors for acquisition of infection by MDR

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Proteus, especially those strains producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) and carbapenemases, represents a major public health concern. In the present work, we characterized 27 MDR Proteus clinical isolates, including 23 Proteus mirabilis, three Proteus terrae, and one Proteus faecis, by whole-genome analysis. Among the 27 isolates analyzed, SXT/R391 ICEs were detected in 14 strains, and the complete sequences of nine ICEs were obtained. These ICEs share a common backbone structure but also have different gene contents in hotspots and variable regions. Among t

BACKGROUND: Although urinary tract infections (UTIs) are extremely common, isolation of causative uropathogens is not always routinely performed, with antibiotics frequently prescribed empirically. This study determined the susceptibility of urinary isolates from two Health and Social Care Trusts (HSCTs) in Northern Ireland to a range of antibiotics commonly used in the treatment of UTIs. Furthermore, we determined if detection of trimethoprim resistance genes (dfrA) could be used as a potential biomarker for rapid detection of phenotypic trimethoprim resistance in urinary pathogens and from u

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcer is one of the major complications for patients with diabetes, and has become an important cause of non-traumatic amputation. Necrotizing fasciitis is a life-threatening soft-tissue infection involving the fascia and subcutaneous tissue. When diabetic foot ulcers are complicated by necrotizing fasciitis (DNF), this increases the risk for amputation and mortality, making DNF treatment more complicated, and eventually leading to amputation and mortality. However, studies on pathogenic bacteria's distribution and drug sensitivity in DNF patients remain lacking. This
