Little is known about the mechanisms that underlie the pathophysiology involved in the development of cumulative trauma disorders. Musicians, specifically string players, may be a useful model to examine the cumulative effects of repetitive motion given the highly attended movements of their left hands and the stereotypical grasp of their right hands. Musculoskeletal disorders related to playing are experienced by 39% to 87% of musicians, making musicians a potentially good model for the study of factors involved in development of cumulative trauma disorders. Sensory thresholds for two-point d…

The paper presents a generalization of many-year complex investigations performed at various departments of the Institute of Medico-Biological Problems (Moscow) and various laboratories and institutes of the Ministry of Public Health and the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, devoted to the pathogenesis of motion disease (sea sickness, vestibulo vegetative syndrome, various forms of kinetosis). The main attention is given to interpretation of the mechanisms of therapeutic and prophylactic action of drugs used for the treatment of such disorders. In particular, the role of a hormonal componen…

Objects displaced intermittently across the visual field will nonetheless give an illusion of continuous motion [called apparent motion (AM)] under many common conditions. It is believed that form perception is of minor importance in determining AM, and that AM is mediated by motion-sensitive areas in the "where" pathway of the cortex. However, form and motion typically interact in specific ways when natural objects move through the environment. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure cortical activation to long-range AM, compared to short-range AM and flicker, while we varied…

The acquisition of spatial language is often assumed to be built upon an early- emerging system of nonlinguistic spatial knowledge. We tested this relationship by examining spatial language in children with Williams syndrome (WS), a rare genetic disorder that gives rise to severe nonlinguistic spatial de deficits together with relatively spared language. Twelve children with WS, 12 normally developing mental-age matched children, and 12 normal adults described 80 videotaped motion events. Children with WS showed substantial control over key linguistic components of the motion event, including …

One of the most important functions of vision is to direct actions to objects. However, every time that vision is used to guide an action, retinal motion signals are produced by the movement of the eye and head as the person looks at the object or by the motion of other objects in the scene. To reach for the object accurately, the visuomotor system must separate information about the position of the stationary target from background retinal motion signals-a long-standing problem that is poorly understood. Here we show that the visuomotor system does not distinguish between these two informatio…

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of breathing supplemental oxygen vs air on alleviating motion sickness in healthy adults.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Between April and July 2002, 20 healthy subjects were exposed to a provocative motion on 2 occasions (1-week interval) according to a randomized, counterbalanced, crossover design. During motion, subjects rated their nausea (1, no symptoms, to 4, moderate nausea) every 30 seconds. Once mild nausea occurred, subjects began breathing supplemental oxygen or air through a face mask. Motion ceased when moderate nausea occurred, but subjects continued bre…

BACKGROUND: Both motion sickness and the illusion of self-motion (i.e., vection) can be induced by moving visual scenes. The results of a previous study imply that motion sickness is primarily dependent on visual motion in foveal vision while vection is primarily dependent on motion in peripheral vision.
HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that similar motion sickness would be produced when tracking a single moving dot and a full screen of moving dots, but that vection would be greater when tracking multiple moving dots.
METHOD: Sixteen subjects viewed moving images presented on a virtual realit…

Juvenile swordtail fish and larval cichlids were subjected to parabolic aircraft flights (PAFs) and individually observed. After the PAFs, inner ear otoliths and sensory epithelia were examined on the light microscopical level. Otolith asymmetry (differences in otolith size between the left and the right side) was especially pronounced in those fish, who exhibited a kinetotic behaviour (e.g., spinning movements) during microgravity. This speaks in favour of a theoretical concept according to which susceptibility to space motion sickness in humans may be based on asymmetric inner ear stones. Th…

STUDY DESIGN: Dynamic lumbar flexion-extension motions were assessed by an electrogoniometer and a videofluoroscopy unit simultaneously.
OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a new technique for the assessment of lumbar spine motion.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spine instability, a clinical condition that is common but difficult to diagnose, has been suggested to involve a characteristic change in the relation between vertebrae during motion. Assessment of lumbar instability using functional radiographs is controversial. Information regarding dynamic spine kinematics in vivo is limited.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of initial resting posture on range of motion of the lumbar spine in 18 normal subjects. Subjects resting posture and active range of motion was measured using the CA-6000 Spinal Motion Analyser (OSI, USA) in five test positions, namely in flat standing and with a variety of heel raises. Analysis showed that there was no significant correlation between subject's normal resting posture and active range of motion. However, when subjects resting posture was artificially altered with heel raises, significant effects on the active range of moti…

Visual and auditory motion information can be used together to provide complementary information about the movement of objects. To investigate the neural substrates of such cross-modal integration, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess brain activation while subjects performed separate visual and auditory motion discrimination tasks. Areas of unimodal activation included the primary and/or early sensory cortex for each modality plus additional sites extending toward parietal cortex. Areas conjointly activated by both tasks included lateral parietal cortex, lateral frontal co…

BACKGROUND: Low frequency horizontal oscillation can cause motion sickness in some forms of transport, but the influence of the characteristics of the motion and the visual and postural conditions of the body on sickness are not known.
HYPOTHESES: It was hypothesised that body position, vision and direction of motion will have an effect on motion sickness.
METHOD: There were 72 seated subjects who were exposed to horizontal oscillation at 0.25 Hz, 0.7 ms(-2) r.m.s. (peak-to-peak displacement of 0.8 m) for up to 30 min while in 1 of 6 conditions. Three conditions involved fore-and-aft motion …

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of motion sickness approaches 100% on rough seas. Some previous studies have reported a strong association between location on a ship and the risk of motion sickness, whereas other studies found no association. This study was undertaken to determine if there is a statistical association between the location of the passenger cabin on a ship and the risk of motion sickness in unadapted passengers.
METHODS: Data were collected on 260 passengers on an expedition ship traversing the Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica, during rough sea conditions. A standa…

Investigators have shown that significant segmental motion occurs in patients immobilized in halo vests. One cadaver study showed that this is decreased with a posterior pad added to the construct. To improve nonoperative care of patients with cervical trauma, segmental cervical motion was evaluated in normal volunteers immobilized in a halo vest with and without a posterior pad. Two commonly used methods to measure sagittal angulation were used. Thirty normal volunteers were placed in halo vests by using positioning pins on the cranium. A sphygmomanometer attached to the posterior uprights of…

OBJECTIVE: To establish the relationships between the range of joint motion (ROM) and disability in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee or hip. Two related issues were addressed: (1) the inter-relationships between ROMs of joint actions, and (2) the relationship between ROM and disability.
METHODS: Data on 198 patients with OA of the knee or hip were used. The ROM was assessed bilaterally for the hip and knee, using a goniometer. Disability was assessed using a self-reporting method (questionnaire) and an observational method. Correlation and factor analysis were used to establish t…

Autonomic manifestations of vestibular dysfunction and motion sickness are well established in the clinical literature. Recent studies of 'vestibular autonomic regulation' have focused predominantly on autonomic responses to stimulation of the vestibular sense organs in the inner ear. These studies have shown that autonomic responses to vestibular stimulation are regionally selective and have defined a 'vestibulosympathetic reflex' in animal experiments. Outside the realm of experimental preparations, however, the importance of vestibular inputs in autonomic regulation is unclear because contr…

The purpose of this prospective study was to determine whether an association exists between foot structure and the development of musculoskeletal overuse injuries. The study group was a well-defined cohort of 449 trainees at the Naval Special Warfare Training Center in Coronado, California. Before beginning training, measurements were made of ankle motion, subtalar motion, and the static (standing) and dynamic (walking) characteristics of the foot arch. The subjects were tracked prospectively for injuries throughout training. We identified risk factors that predispose people to lower extremit…

Attention can enhance or modulate neural responses to stimuli at early and late stages of sensory processing. We were interested in the modulatory effect of attention to visual motion on cortical responses as measured by functional MRI. Subjects were scanned during repeated presentations of identical stimuli (visual motion) while only the attentional component of the task was varied. Enhanced haemodynamic responses during attentive conditions defined an occipitoparietofrontal system, including sensory and association areas, as well as the medial thalamus and superior colliculus. Attentional mo…
