A large pedunculated leiomyoma with two-sided cystic degenerations mimicking a bilateral ovarian malignancy: a case report.

The authors present an unusual case of a large, pedunculated uterine leiomyoma with two-sided cystic degenerations, which mimicked a bilateral malignant ovarian tumor on ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A 32-year-old unmarried female patient presented to our outpatient clinic with complaints of abdominal distention and a palpable abdominal mass extending into the upper abdomen. Ultrasonography and MRI revealed a large solid mass with bilateral cystic areas extending into both uterine adnexa. The patient then underwent a laparotomy. Gross examination revealed normal ovaries

Secondary hypertension due to concomitant aldosterone-producing adenoma and parathyroid adenoma.

There is a growing body of evidence supporting a bidirectional relationship between parathyroid hormone (PTH) and aldosterone (Aldo). We report a case of secondary hypertension due to concomitant Aldo-producing adenoma (APA) and parathyroid adenoma (PA) requiring both unilateral adrenalectomy and parathyroidectomy.

Precise endoscopic and pathologic features in a Crohn's disease case with two fistula-associated small bowel adenocarcinomas complicated by an anal canal adenocarcinoma.

The patient was a 40-year-old man who had suffered from Crohn's disease (CD) for 19 years and developed an intractable perianal fistula and two strictures in the small bowel. Dilatation of the two strictures using double-balloon endoscopy did not improve the subileus symptoms. An anal canal adenocarcinoma was also detected using double-balloon endoscopy. The ileum and rectoperianal area were partially resected, and a precise immunohistochemical pathologic assessment revealed that all three lesions were fistula-associated adenocarcinomas. Accumulating endoscopic findings of CD-associated cancer

[A case of double liver cancer: hepatocellular carcinoma and combined hepatocellular and mucinous cholangiocarcinoma].

We report a case of double liver cancer in an elderly woman with chronic hepatitis C. The patient was diagnosed with two liver tumors when she was in her 70s, and she underwent hepatectomy for the same. Histopathological examination determined that the two tumors were distinct. One was a well-to-moderately differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and the other was a combined hepatocellular carcinoma and mucinous cholangiocarcinoma (ChC). The HCC component was positive for cytokeratin 19, and it infiltrated into the portal vein and artery and the gall bladder. The ChC component was positiv

Coexistence of marginal zone cutaneous B-cell lymphoma and classic Hodgkin disease: does a biological relationship exist?

The coexistence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and Hodgkin disease (HD) in the same patient, although previously reported, is very unusual. This situation is extremely rare when the first diagnosis is a cutaneous B NHL, and exceptional if there is no personal background of cytostatic treatment. We report a 44-year-old man who developed cutaneous nodules over a period of two years. A marginal zone cutaneous B-cell lymphoma was diagnosed. On staging investigation a mass in the lingual tonsil was found and excision biopsy showed a classical Hodgkin lymphoma.

A benign or malignant eyelid lump--can you tell? An unusual collision tumour highlighting the difficulty differentiating a hidrocystoma from a basal cell carcinoma.

Hidrocystoma and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) are common eyelid lesions. The former is benign while the latter is malignant and can cause significant destruction of the adnexal structures, orbital invasion and visual loss. The authors describe a case of a 76-year-old female with a slow growing right upper lid lesion which was diagnosed as a hidrocystoma but excision biopsy revealed a collision tumour comprised of a BCC abutting a hidrocystoma in the same lesion. Cystic BCC can masquerade as hidrocystoma but there are no previous case reports of BCC coexisting with hidrocystoma in the same lesion

[A case of primary urinary bladder and ureter cancer with a choriocarcinoma].

An 85-year-old man had planned a laparoscopic right nephrouretectomy for a right lower ureteral cancer, pT1, G3. Two months prior to the surgery, he was re-examined because of continuing macrohematuria. He had a 50 mm tumor in his urinary bladder and tumors from the right upper to lower urinary tract by computed tomographic (CT) examination and cystoscopy. He did not have any metastasis. We diagnosed a cT3N0M0 for the right ureteral cancer and a cT3N0M0 for the bladder cancer. A right nephrouretectomy and cystectomy were then performed. The histopathologic examination revealed an urothelial ca

[A patient with metachronous ovarian metastases of signet-ring cell carcinoma of the transverse colon showing long-term survival after surgery].

The patient was a 43-year-old female who consulted a local physician due primarily to lower abdominal pain. She was referred to our hospital for close evaluation and treatment. Since circumferential cancer was detected in the transverse colon by lower digestive tract endoscopy, the patient was hospitalized for surgical treatment. Transverse colectomy (Cur A) was performed, histopathological examination indicated signet-ring cell carcinoma of the transverse colon, and the lesion was diagnosed as type 4, SS, ly3, v0, n1 (+), Stage III a. Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy was recommended, but t

[A case of synchronous contralateral renal cell carcinoma and urothelial carcinoma].

A 63-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with gross hematuria. Abdominal computed tomography showed an 80mm right renal tumor, 31mm left renal tumor, and 30 mm splenic tumor. Cystoscopy revealed a papillary tumor around the left orifice. Right radical nephrectomy and splenectomy were performed. Histological examination findings showed that the right renal tumor was a renal cell carcinoma, clear cell type, G1, INFalpha, pT2, ly0, v0, and that the splenic tumor was an arteriovenous fistula. Next, transurethral resection of the bladder tumor was performed and a histological examination show

Coexistence of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the rectum and adenocarcinoma of the prostate in a patient with familial GIST.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal system. The rectum is a rare location for GIST. Prostate adenocarcinoma is the most common malignancy in geriatric men. Rarely, rectal GIST mimics prostate pathologies. CASE REPORT: We describe a 58-year-old male patient who was admitted with signs and symptoms of prostatism. A presumptive diagnosis of primary prostate sarcoma was made based on imaging studies and a trucut biopsy. Removal of the mass compressing both the prostate and the rectum revealed the final diagnosis of sync

Coexistence of ovarian cancer and renal cell carcinoma.

Coexistence of ovarian cancer and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is extremely rare. Only one case was diagnosed in a total of 584 patients with RCC from 1982 to 2002 at our hospital. A 58-year-old woman presented with an enlarged girdle length for 3 months. Computed tomography scan showed a right cystic adnexal mass measuring 10 x 10 cm, and another tumor measuring 3 x 2 cm at the right kidney. She underwent debulking surgery and radical nephrectomy. Pathologic examination revealed right ovarian clear-cell carcinoma with peritoneal, omental, and fallopian tube metastasis, and conventional clear-ce

Microcystic adnexal carcinoma arising within a nevus sebaceus.

Nevus sebaceus (NS) is a congenital skin lesion arising on the face and scalp that has been linked to the development of various carcinomas. We describe a case of microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC) arising in an NS on the scalp of a 62-year-old man. Excisional skin biopsy and hematoxylin and eosin stains were performed to examine the specimen. Serial sections revealed papillomatosis typical of NS, with focal changes consistent with syringocystadenoma papilliferum. Adjacent to the syringocystadenoma papilliferum was an area containing small epithelial islands that extended focally into the sub

Cervical embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumour: a more than coincidental association of two rare neoplasms?

A case in which an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the cervix and an ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumour of intermediate differentiation occurred in a 13-year-old girl is described. Although initially considered as a chance association, a review of the literature showed the co-occurrence of these two uncommon neoplasms in three previous cases. The reason for this association, which is thought to be more than coincidental, is not known, although an underlying genetic abnormality is a possibility. The ovarian tumour in this case was characterised by the presence of foci of cells with extremely pleo

Radical cystectomy with extended lymphadenectomy in the presence of a pelvic kidney.

The pelvic kidney represents the most common form of congenital renal ectopia. Because of its location, variable vasculature, and short ureteral length, the presence of a pelvic kidney in a patient undergoing radical cystectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy creates unique technical challenges for the urologic surgeon. We describe a patient with a right pelvic kidney and invasive bladder cancer for whom radical cystectomy with extended pelvic iliac lymph node dissection and ileal conduit was performed.

An unusual coincidence of multiple synchronous kidney tumors with a metachronous rectal adenocarcinoma.

In synchronous surgery specimens (right-sided nephrectomy and left-sided partial nephrectomy), a unique combination of a papillary (chromophil) renal cell carcinoma (4 x 3.7 x 3.5 cm) and a renal oncocytoma (11 x 10 x 9 mm) in the right kidney and a renal carcinoid (2.5 x 2.3 x 1.1 cm) in the resected part of the left kidney has been found. This multiplicity and bilaterality, based on the findings of three distinct histogenetic types of kidney tumors, was accompanied by a metachronous rectal adenocarcinoma discovered 14 months later. After surgery, no radiation or other oncologic therapy was g

Linear arrangement of multiple deep penetrating nevi: report of first case and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Deep penetrating nevus is a recently described variant of melanocytic nevi with clinical and histopathological features that may be confused with malignant melanoma, blue nevus, pigmented Spitz nevus, or congenital melanocytic nevus. We report a case with linear arrangement of multiple deep penetrating nevi. To our knowledge, such presentation has never been reported in the literature. OBSERVATIONS: We describe a patient with multiple darkly pigmented lesions in the right periauricular area, above and behind the ear. The histopathological features of these lesions were consistent

[Transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter with inverted proliferation accompanied with papillary bladder tumor: a case report].

An 85-year-old female was referred to our hospital with chief complaints of right flank pain and gross hematuria. Ultrasonography demonstrated right hydroureteronephrosis and a thumb head-sized solid mass in the lower third of the right ureter. Cystoscopy revealed papillary tumors near the right ureteral orifice. Under the preoperative diagnosis of right ureteral tumor and bladder tumor, transurethral resection of bladder tumor, right nephroureterectomy and partial cystectomy were performed. The gross specimen of the ureter contained a 5 x 3 x 1 cm, polypoid and smooth-surfaced tumor. The path
