Feasibility and preliminary signal of cerebellar intermittent theta burst stimulation for static balance in cerebellar ataxia: a pilot study.

This study explored the short-term effects of 50 Hz cerebellar intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) on static balance and prefrontal cortical activation in patients with cerebellar ataxia (CA). Ten patients with CA (4 males; mean age, 57.6 ± 9.1 years) underwent iTBS over the bilateral cerebellum for five consecutive days (8 min/session, 80% active motor threshold); static balance was assessed using a Balance Trainer 4 (BT4) under eyes-open (EO) and eyes-closed (EC) conditions at baseline (V0), immediately post-intervention (V1), and 6 weeks post-treatment (V2). Clinical scales (K-SARA,

Auditory evoked potentials in suspected idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: longitudinal associations with tap test and clinical outcomes.

New biomarkers are needed to improve the clinical profile of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), a potentially reversible cause of cognitive and functional decline in older adults. The Tap Test (TT) is commonly used to support clinical decision-making regarding ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) surgery; however, objective markers of treatment response remain limited. This study aimed to investigate whether auditory brainstem response (ABR) and cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP) measures are associated with clinical response to the TT and with longitudinal clinical outcomes

A practical measure of integrated information reveals alpha-band activity and the posterior cortex as neural correlates of arousal.

The search for neurophysiological markers of consciousness and their neural substrates remains a focal point in neuroscience research. The integrated information theory (IIT) provides a promising quantitative framework for consciousness assessment, but computational limitations of existing Φ estimation methods hinder an in-depth understanding of large-scale cortical integration. Here, we proposed a new measure, Φcopula, by incorporating the Gaussian copula approach for estimating integrated information. Simulation analysis demonstrated that Φcopula significantly outperformed common estimators,

Predicting Major Depressive Disorder Using Neural Networks from Spectral Measures of EEG Data.

Processing electroencephalogram (EEG) data using neural networks is becoming increasingly important in modern medicine. This study introduces the development of a neural network method using a combination of psychological questionnaire data and spectral characteristics of resting-state EEG. The data were collected from 71 individuals: 42 healthy and 29 with major depressive disorder (MDD). We evaluated four classes of algorithms-traditional machine learning, deep learning (LSTM), ablation analysis, and feature importance analysis-for two primary tasks: binary classification (healthy vs. MDD) a

Electroencephalography-Based Machine and Deep Learning Approaches for the Diagnosis of Dissociative Disorders: A Comprehensive Review.

Dissociative disorders (DDs), including dissociative identity disorder and depersonalization disorder, are complex and often misdiagnosed psychiatric conditions due to their overlapping symptoms with other mental illnesses. Electroencephalography (EEG), a low-cost and noninvasive neuroimaging tool, is a valuable means of examining the neurophysiological signatures associated with DDs. In this review, we aim to systematically evaluate how machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods are applied to EEG data for the diagnosis and monitoring of DDs, highlighting their effectiveness, limita

Modulatory dynamics mark the transition between anesthetic states of unconsciousness.

Unconsciousness maintained by GABAergic anesthetics, such as propofol and sevoflurane, is characterized by slow-delta oscillations (0.3 to 4 Hz) and alpha oscillations (8 to 14 Hz) that are readily visible in the electroencephalogram. At higher doses, these slow-delta-alpha (SDA) oscillations transition into burst suppression. This is a marker of a state of profound brain inactivation during which isoelectric (flatline) periods alternate with periods of the SDA patterns present at lower doses. While the SDA and burst suppression patterns have been analyzed separately, the transition from one t

Effects of restraint and immobilization on electrosensory behaviors of weakly electric fish.

Weakly electric fishes have been an important model system in behavioral neuroscience for more than 40 years. These fishes use a specialized electric organ to produce an electric field that is typically below 1 volt/cm and serves in many behaviors including social communication and prey detection. Electrical behaviors are easy to study because inexpensive and widely available tools enable continuous monitoring of the electric field of individual or groups of interacting fish. Weakly electric fish have been routinely used in tightly controlled neurophysiological experiments in which the animal
