Struggling to cope in an unknown realm: a qualitative study of moral resilience in frontline healthcare professionals in Swedish hospital wards during a pandemic crisis.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the process of moral resilience among frontline healthcare professionals. By delving into experiences of handling moral challenges during a pandemic crisis, we aimed to understand dimensions of moral resilience, affecting factors and consequences. This understanding can inform the implementation of interventions to support healthcare professionals' well-being and ability to deliver high-quality care, under both routine and extreme conditions. DESIGN: A qualitative exploratory study was conducted using grounded theory methodology. Data were collected ret

Development of a Novel Assessment Tool and Code Sepsis Checklist for Neonatal Late-Onset Sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnosis and timely management of neonatal late-onset sepsis (nLOS) have been less well-studied than those of early-onset sepsis. We noticed a delay in nLOS detection and management in our neonatal intensive care unit. PURPOSE: To develop an assessment tool to aid in the recognition and reporting of nLOS and to standardize the management process once sepsis is recognized. METHODS: The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) improvement model provided the framework for interventions for our antibiotic stewardship program, including the aims of this project. A literature review was perf

A Peer Review Intervention for Monitoring and Evaluating sites (PRIME) that improved randomized controlled trial conduct and performance.

OBJECTIVE: Good clinical practice (GCP) guidelines emphasize trial site monitoring, although the implementation is unspecified and evidence for benefit is sparse. We aimed to develop a site monitoring process using peer reviewers to improve staff training, site performance, data collection, and GCP compliance. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: The Peer Review Intervention for Monitoring and Evaluating sites (PRIME) team observed and gave feedback on trial recruitment and follow-up appointments, held staff meetings, and examined documentation during annual 2-day site visits. The intervention was evalu

An Educational Intervention to Train Professional Nurses in Promoting Patient Engagement: A Pilot Feasibility Study.

Introduction: Growing evidence recognizes that patients who are motivated to take an active role in their care can experience a range of health benefits and reduced healthcare costs. Nurses play a critical role in the effort to make patients fully engaged in their disease management. Trainings devoted to increase nurses' skills and knowledge to assess and promote patient engagement are today a medical education priority. To address this goal, we developed a program of nurse education training in patient engagement strategies (NET-PES). This paper presents pilot feasibility study and preliminar

Nursing care of the child with neutropenic enterocolitis.

Neutropenic enterocolitis (NE) is a serious complication in neutropenic patients. Once exclusively thought to be found in patients with leukemia and lymphoma, it is now being seen with increased frequency during bone marrow transplant, chemotherapy for solid tumors, and in patients suffering from acquired immune deficiency syndrome and cyclic neutropenia. The pathophysiology of NE is not completely understood, but unquestionably involves neutropenia, mucosal barrier damage, and infection resulting in a necrotizing process of the bowel wall. The cecum, ileus, and ascending colon are most common

When Complexity Becomes Ordinary: Expertise and the Recognition Paradox in Nursing Practice.

This paper develops the recognition paradox in nursing practice: expertise can increase the capacity to manage clinically complex situations while rendering the relational work through which they are managed less available for reflective recognition. Nursing complexity is commonly identified through visible proxies-workload, acuity, care intensity, number or difficulty of interventions. Clancy (2024) has shown how attempts to represent complex practice frequently reduce it to discrete components. Building on that critique, the paper identifies a distinct site of selectivity: complexity may bec

Psychologically informed care of patients with anorexia nervosa on an acute medical ward.

Anorexia nervosa is a challenging and highly distressing illness associated with significant and often debilitating symptoms that affect the person's physical and mental well-being, as well as their wider social networks. Although some patients can make important steps in their recovery in the community, many will become significantly unwell and require medical stabilisation and refeeding in an acute medical ward as a result of significant weight loss. This article describes some of the challenges experienced by adult nurses when caring for patients with anorexia nervosa on acute medical wards

Neuronal pathway finding: from neurons to initial neural networks.

Neuronal pathway finding is crucial for structured cellular organization and development of neural circuits within the nervous system. Neuronal pathway finding within the visual system has been extensively studied and therefore is used as a model to review existing knowledge regarding concepts of this developmental process. General principles of neuron pathway finding throughout the nervous system exist. Comprehension of these concepts guides neuroscience nurses in gaining an understanding of the developmental course of action, the implications of different anomalies, as well as the theoretica

Person-centred environments and nurses' turnover intention: examining their relationship using structural equation modelling.

BACKGROUND: A supportive practice environment is essential for nurse retention and to enable nurses to provide effective person-centred care. When nurses are prevented from acting according to their professional values, they may experience moral distress, potentially leading to disengagement and increased turnover intention. Although the impact of the practice environment on nurse outcomes is well documented, the pathways linking person-centred aspects of the practice environment to turnover intention remain underexplored. This study aimed to test a theoretical model linking these factors to i

Work-Family Behavioral Role Conflict and Turnover Intention Among Clinical Nurses: Multiple Mediating Effects of Role Overload, Presenteeism, and Psychological Capital.

BACKGROUND: Work-family behavioral role conflict (WFBRC) is an important stressor in the nursing work environment and may be associated with turnover intention. However, the roles of role overload, presenteeism, and (PsyCap) in this relationship have rarely been examined simultaneously among Chinese clinical nurses. AIMS: Guided by the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study aimed to examine the relationship between WFBRC and turnover intention among Chinese clinical nurses, as well as the mediating and moderating roles of role overload, presenteeism, and PsyCap. METHODS: This was

Online real-time teaching interaction and self-regulated learning ability: a cross-sectional mediation study among undergraduate nursing students.

BACKGROUND: As higher education increasingly shifts toward online models, nursing education has also widely adopted digital learning formats, one of the key theoretical foundations of which is the self-regulated learning model. Existing research has confirmed that academic self-efficacy is significantly and positively associated with the development of students' self-regulated learning abilities. However, its mediating mechanism between online real-time teaching interaction and self-regulated learning ability in nursing students has not yet been systematically explored. METHODS: This study ad

Developing person-centred care in hospices through the voice and leadership of nursing: lessons from the United Kingdom.

INTRODUCTION: Nursing leadership and the voice of nurses are crucial for developing person-centred care in hospices. Concerns have been raised that, as palliative care has evolved from its original vision and become more integrated into the mainstream healthcare system, it has increasingly become medicalised. This paper presents an emancipatory practice development programme aimed at enhancing the visibility and voice of nursing and nurse leadership to improve person-centred care in hospices across the United Kingdom. METHODS: The project was a 10-month collaborative education programme for n
