A rare case of a 34-year-old patient diagnosed late with Kallmann syndrome: case report.

Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a rare genetic disorder manifested by the combination of hypogonadotropic-hypogonadism and olfactory dysfunction. … aled a small prostate, and testicular USG demonstrated small testicles. Neuroimaging study revealed olfactory bulb agenesis and hypoplasia of the olfactory sulcus. Treatment was done by testosterone replacement therapy, and the patient is now on a regular follow-up. In conclusion, suspected clinical features of KS may guide the diagnosis with comprehensive hormo …

Particle deposition and sensory drive.

The mutualism between chemical cues emitted into the air and variations in how primates respond to them using olfaction has demonstrated asp … ough the nasal cavity to the main olfactory epithelium, which ultimately leads to processing in the olfactory bulb. Here we discuss particle deposition research, sensory drive and their potential applications to evolutionary anthropology.

Technique for Intranasal Administration of α-Synuclein Aggregates.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the presence of Lewy bodies, which are aggregates of α-synuclein (α-Syn). Recently, the disease was proposed to develop and progress through the prion-like propagation of α-Syn aggregates from the olfactory bulb (OB) or dorsal nucleus of the vagus nerve. Although the origin of α-Syn aggregates in the OB remains unclear, their propagation from the olfactory mucosa has been recently suggested. We previously showed that intranasal administration of α-Syn aggregates in a mouse model induced α-Syn pathology in the OB of mice.…

Developmental Profile of Brain Neprilysin Expression Correlates with Olfactory Behaviour of Rats.

A neuropeptidase, neprilysin (NEP), is a major amyloid (Aβ)-degrading enzyme involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The olfactory system is affected early in AD with characteristic Aβ accumulation, but data on the dynamics of NEP expression in the olfactory system are absent. Our study demonstrates that NEP mRNA expression in rat olfactory bulbs (OB), entorhinal cortex (ECx), hippocampus (Hip), parietal cortex (PCx) and striatum (Str) increases during the first postnatal month being the highest in the OB and Str. By 3 months, NEP mRNA levels sharply decrease in the ECx, Hip …

BAcTrace, a tool for retrograde tracing of neuronal circuits in Drosophila.

Animal behavior is encoded in neuronal circuits in the brain. To elucidate the function of these circuits, it is necessary to identify, record from and manipulate networks of connected neurons. Here we present BAcTrace (Botulinum-Activated Tracer), a genetically encoded, retrograde, transsynaptic labeling system. BAcTrace is based on Clostridium botulinum neurotoxin A, Botox, which we engineered to travel retrogradely between neurons to activate an otherwise silent transcription factor. We validated BAcTrace at three neuronal connections in the Drosophila olfactory system. We show that BAcTrac

Transplantation of olfactory ensheathing cells to evaluate functional recovery after peripheral nerve injury.

Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) are neural crest cells which allow growth and regrowth of the primary olfactory neurons. Indeed, the prim … Cs are constituted of several subpopulations present in both the olfactory mucosa (OM-OECs) and the olfactory bulbs (OB-OECs). We present here a model of cellular transplantation based on the use of these different subpopulations of OECs in a RLN injury model. Using this paradigm, primary cultures of OB-OECs and OM-OECs were transplanted in Matrigel after sectio …

Olfactory ensheathing cell tumor with neurofibroma-like features: a case report and review of the literature.

A 32-year-old man had seizure attack since April 2008 and radiographic examination revealed a heterogeneous enhancing mass at the left subfrontal region. He underwent craniotomy for tumor removal on October 1, 2008. The tumor, which was grayish white with glistening appearance and rubbery consistency, was traced to the proximal part of left olfactory tract. Histopathological examination revealed a hypocellular tumor with dense hyalinization in most areas. The tumor cells had ovoid to elongate and often comma-shaped nucleus. Myxoid change of the stroma was apparent in places. Most of the tumor

[Teratogenic effect of ammonium metavanadate in Swiss albino mice].

Far as it is known to us, there is only one report in the medical literature dealing with the teratogenous effect of vanadium on neural structures (1): while trying to experimentally induce anencephaly in the offsprings of swiss-albino mice through the administration of ammonium metavanadate via drinking water, during different stages of their lives; a neural tube defect consisting of arrhinencephaly was obtained; various degrees of hypoplasia or aplasia of both the olfactory bulbs and tracts were evidenced, as well as congenital lesions of variable intensity in other rhinencephalic structures…

Microanatomy and surgical relevance of the olfactory cistern.

All surgical approaches to the anterior skull base involve the olfactory cistern and have the risk of damaging the olfactory nerve. The purp … tal gyrus. In coronal section, the cistern was triangular in shape; its anterior part enveloped the olfactory bulbs and was high and broad; its posterior part was medial-superior to internal carotid artery and was also much broader. There were one or several openings in the inferior wall of the posterior part in 53.4% of the cisterns. The olfactory cistern commu …

Quantifying the cribriform plate: influences of allometry, function, and phylogeny in Carnivora.

The small, perforated bony cup of the anterior cranial fossa called the cribriform plate (CP) is perhaps the best-preserved remnant of olfactory anatomy in fossil mammal skulls. The CP and its myriad foramina record the passage of peripheral olfactory nerves from nasal cavity to olfactory bulb. Previous work has suggested that CP surface area reflects aspects of olfactory capacity (as inferred from habitat and observed behavior) in mammals. To further explore the utility of CP as a proxy for olfactory function, we designed novel, nondestructive digital methods to quantify CP morphology from dr…

Olfactory outcomes in Zika virus-associated Guillain-Barré syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has been associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). However, little is known about t … V promoted both cellular damage in the olfactory neuroepithelium and protracted inflammation of the olfactory bulb, likely accounting for smell alteration. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with ZIKV-related GBS had poorer long-term olfactory function than patients with GBS-non-ZIKA, and ZIKV-infected mice are hyposmic. These observations suggest that ZIKV belongs on the l …

Early treatment of Kallmann syndrome may prevent eunuchoid appearance and behavior.

Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a genetic disorder which combines hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia. Hypogonadism is characterized by the absence or reduced levels of gonadotropin-releasing hormone and anosmia due to olfactory bulb aplasia. KS treatment usually begins just before puberty, but brain sexual maturation occurs long before puberty normally at perinatal age. As brain cells implicated in the development of the olfactory and reproductive system have a rostral and a caudal origin, and the rostral origin is affected by aplasia in KS and the caudal origin does not seem to be affected, …

Olfaction and peripheral olfactory connections in methimazole-treated rats.

Methimazole has been reported to produce extensive degenerative changes in olfactory epithelium and a severe deficit in odor detection [Genter BM, Owens DM, Carlone HB, Crofton KM. Fundam. Appl. Toxicol. 1996;29:71-77; Genter BM, Owens DM, Deamer NJ, Blake BL, Wesley DS, Levi PE. Toxicol. Pathol. 1995;23:477-486.]. To examine this further, rats were tested on olfactory detection and discrimination problems before and after intraperitoneal injection of 300 mg/kg methimazole. In the first 2 days after treatment, experimental rats had nasal congestion and a modest decrement on odor detection and
