Etiology and epidemiology of respiratory infections in community-based influenza-like illness during the COVID-19 pandemic, Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic.

OBJECTIVES: Respiratory infections pose an ongoing global public health burden, with multiple viral and bacterial etiologies. This study aimed to characterize the etiology of influenza-like illness (ILI) during the COVID-19 pandemic in a community cohort in Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). METHODS: From September 2021 to April 2022, 6300 individuals from 999 households in 25 villages were enrolled in a prospective surveillance study. Oropharyngeal swabs were collected from ILI cases and tested for SARS-CoV-2 using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, and for

The virology of Omicron: pathophysiology, immune regulation, and clinical impact of SARS-CoV-2 sub variants.

Since its emergence in late 2019, SARS-CoV-2 has evolved into multiple variants with distinct genetic and clinical features. Among them, the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) and its sublineages BA.2.75, JN.1.8, and KP.2 have shown enhanced transmissibility and immune evasion, while generally exhibiting reduced lower respiratory tract pathogenicity compared to earlier variants, thereby continuing to pose significant challenges to public health. In India, these variants have significantly shaped the trajectory of the pandemic, necessitating focused evaluation of their biological and clinical impact.

A practical approach to multifaceted perspectives for sustainable international collaboration on mosquito-borne diseases in Southeast Asia.

The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic highlighted the necessity and limitations of scientific collaboration and equitable and effective international research partnerships. The spread of mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) presents severe public health challenges, particularly in Southeast Asia. Addressing these threats requires establishing regional priorities, bridging research gaps, and strengthening long-term international collaboration. We propose a practical approach to multifaceted perspectives to enhance collaboration across Asia. This study examines MBD-related scientific publications from

Large-scale analysis of B-cell epitopes on influenza virus hemagglutinin - implications for cross-reactivity of neutralizing antibodies.

Influenza viruses continue to cause substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide. Fast gene mutation on surface proteins of influenza virus result in increasing resistance to current vaccines and available antiviral drugs. Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) represent targets for prophylactic and therapeutic treatments of influenza. We performed a systematic bioinformatics study of cross-reactivity of neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) against influenza virus surface glycoprotein hemagglutinin (HA). This study utilized the available crystal structures of HA complexed with the antibodies for t

Exploring the critical risk factors in COVID-19 vaccination clinics aimed uncertainty: Insight from Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: One of the key lessons emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic is the necessity of assessing and strengthening the operational capacity of COVID-19 vaccination clinics (CVCs) to ensure effective response and service delivery during current and future pandemics. Countries with more robust and resilient CVC infrastructure were better equipped to manage mass vaccination efforts compared to those with constrained capacities. This study focuses on Pakistan, a lower-middle-income country, where mass vaccination campaigns across five regions encountered substantial operational challenges due

The need for holistic, longitudinal and comparable, real-time assessment of the emotional, behavioral and societal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across nations.

As of the end of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to over 82 million verified infections and almost 1.8 million COVID-19-related deaths worldwide,1 resulting to an unprecedented public health response around the globe. The COVID-19 pandemic, together with the applied multi-level restrictive measures, has generated a unique combination of an unpredictable and stressful biomedical and socioeconomic environment (i.e., syndemic),2 introducing real-life threat, involuntary and drastic every-day life-style changes with uncertain financial and future prospects, alongside with minimized coping and

Coincidence analysis: Identifying factors contributing to frontline health workers' confidence to face future pandemics across Honduras, Syria, and South Sudan.

Frontline health workers in humanitarian settings play a critical role in pandemic response, yet evidence on what sustains response readiness beyond the emergency is limited. This study examined factors associated with primary healthcare workers' sustained self-reported knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond to future outbreaks or pandemics, with the configurational analysis focused on confidence. A retrospective cross-sectional survey was conducted among 118 health workers in Honduras, Syria, and South Sudan who received COVID-19 training. Coincidence analysis was applied with a set of

Factors Related to Mortality in Patients with COVID-19 during the Early Phase of the Pandemic in Japan: An Observational Study Using the Osaka Prefectural Novel Coronavirus Response Status Management System.

INTRODUCTION: Elucidating the epidemiological picture in the early phase of a pandemic is crucial to strengthening preparedness and public health responses to future emerging infectious diseases. Using data from the "Osaka Prefectural Novel Coronavirus Response Status Management System," we evaluated factors associated with mortality among patients with novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. METHODS: The study periods were from January 29 to June 13, 2020 (first surge), from June 14 to October 9, 2020 (second surge), and from October 10 to December 24, 2020 (up

Evolution of differences in clinical presentation across epidemic waves among patients with COVID-like-symptoms who received care at the Mexican Social Security Institute.

BACKGROUND: Timely monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 variants is crucial to effectively managing both prevention and treatment efforts. In this paper, we aim to describe demographic and clinical patterns of individuals with COVID-19-like symptoms during the first three epidemic waves in Mexico to identify changes in those patterns that may reflect differences determined by virus variants. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive analysis of a large database containing records for all individuals who sought care at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) due to COVID-19-like symptoms from March 2020 to
