[Toxic optic neuropathy due to cisplatin therapy: a case report].

BACKGROUND: Optic neuropathies presenting as bilateral disc oedema lead to a vast field of differential diagnosis; a toxic aetiology should be taken into consideration. HISTORY AND SIGNS: A 55-year-old patient with a non-metastatic pleuramesothelioma received cisplatin as palliative chemotherapy. Due to a unilateral high myopia on the left eye the patient has a severe anisometropic amblyopia. The patient complained about visual loss and changed colour vision. Visual acuity was 0.1 on the right eye and counting fingers on the left eye. The anterior parts of the eyes were unremarkable, the opti

A prospective study on the implantation of anterior chamber intraocular lenses during keratoplasty for pseudophakic and aphakic bullous keratopathy.

Between April 1986 and April 1989, the authors conducted a prospective study of the use of open-loop anterior chamber intraocular lenses (AC IOLs) in patients undergoing penetrating keratoplasty for pseudophakic bullous keratopathy or monocular aphakic bullous keratopathy. All patients underwent the same operation--a penetrating keratoplasty combined with insertion of an open-loop AC IOL. Pseudophakic patients had an IOL exchange at the time of surgery. Thirty-six patients have been followed an average of 15 months. Thirty-two (89%) of the grafts are clear. Preoperatively, 100% of eyes had vis

Long-Term Management of Sympathetic Ophthalmia Developing in the Early Period Following Trauma: A Case Report.

This case report presents a rare instance of sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) in a patient who developed globe rupture due to blunt ocular trauma. It provides insights into the clinical course and three-year follow-up of successful treatment achieved through systemic immunosuppressive therapy. A 45-year-old male patient sustained blunt trauma to his left eye. Due to clinical signs indicative of rupture, conjunctival exploration was performed, revealing a scleral rupture that was primarily repaired. On postoperative day 18, the patient developed bilateral panuveitis consistent with trauma-induced SO

Morning Glory Disc Anomaly, A Report of a Successfully Treated Case of Functional Amblyopia.

Morning Glory Disc Anomaly (MGDA) is a congenital malformation of the optic nerve characterized by the presence of a funnel-shaped macropapilla with neuroglial remnants in its center surrounded by an elevated and pigmented chorioretinal ring. Its incidence is rare and no gender predisposition has been found. Associated conditions like strabismus lead to an early diagnosis. We report the case of a 3.8-year-old boy with amblyopia of the right eye (count fingers 0.3 meters) due to MGDA. Correction of the refractive error with glasses, along with occlusive therapy resulted in a visual acuity of 20

Factors Influencing Visual Acuity in Fuchs' Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy.

SIGNIFICANCE: In eyes with mild Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy without significant corneal edema, objective scattering index has the strongest influence on distance visual acuity, followed by the anterior corneal densitometry. Our findings suggest that distance visual acuity deteriorates in eyes with higher forward light scatter. PURPOSE: To evaluate the factors affecting distance visual acuity in patients with Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy. METHODS: This retrospective study comprised 31 eyes of 31 patients with mild Fuchs' dystrophy without corneal edema and 25 eyes of 25 age-m

Epidemiology and clinical outcome of intraocular foreign bodies in Hong Kong: a 13-year review.

The purpose of this study was to describe the epidemiology, visual outcome and prognostic factors of intraocular foreign body (IOFB) injuries in a tertiary centre in Hong Kong. A retrospective review of 21 eyes in 21 patients with IOFB that presented to United Christian Hospital from January 2001 to July 2014 was performed. IOFB represented 16 % of all open-globe traumas. There was a high male predominance (90 %). The mean age was 42. Work-related injuries (86 %) were the main cause, where only 10.5 % had eye protection. Hammering was the commonest mechanism of injury (43 %). Most IOFBs were m
