Pattern electroretinogram recorded by skin electrodes in early ocular hypertension and glaucoma.

Diagnostic value of transient pattern electroretinogram (PERG), recorded by skin electrodes, was compared with Goldmann perimetry in cases of ocular hypertension and glaucoma. According to the assumption that the PERG mostly reflects activity of the retinal ganglion cells, and histological evidence that 30-50% atrophy of the retinal ganglion cells is necessary to cause defects in visual field, we wanted to assess if i) this method could be more sensitive in detecting early glaucomatous damage than routine Goldmann perimetry in eyes with normal or only borderline elevated intraocular pressure i

Sensory encoding of emotion conveyed by the face and visual context.

Humans rapidly detect and interpret sensory signals that have emotional meaning. The posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) and amygdala are known to be critical for this ability, but their precise contributions remain contentious. Here we investigate how these structures process visual emotional cues using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to model fMRI signal acquired as human participants view complex, naturalistic stimuli. Characterizing data from two archival studies (Ns = 20, 45), we evaluated whether representations from ANNs optimized to recognize emotion from facial expressions alo

The neural substrates of affective face recognition in patients with Hwa-Byung and healthy individuals in Korea.

Hwa-Byung (HB) is a Korean culture-bound psychiatric syndrome caused by the suppression of anger. HB patients have various psychological and somatic symptoms, such as chest discomfort, a sensation of heat, and the sensation of having an epigastric mass. In this study, we measured brain activity in HB patients and healthy individuals in response to affective facial stimuli. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the current study measured neural responses to neutral, sad, and angry facial stimuli in 12 healthy individuals and 12 patients with HB. In response to all types of facial

Anisotropy in the representation of direction preferences in cat area 18.

Higher visual cortical areas are involved in the perception of complex stimuli, such as the optic flow created by self-motion. On the other hand, area 18 is thought to extract primitive visual features, feeding higher cortical areas for further processing. In this study, we applied optical imaging of intrinsic signals in the central, lower visual field of cat area 18, and reconstructed direction preference and direction selectivity maps in each hemisphere. We observed a significant overrepresentation of downward and temporal directions, in accordance with previous electrophysiological results.

Emerging neural specialization of the ventral occipitotemporal cortex to characters through phonological association learning in preschool children.

The ventral occipitotemporal (vOT) cortex serves as a core region for visual processing, and specific areas of this region show preferential activation for various visual categories such as faces and print. The emergence of such functional specialization in the human cortex represents a pivotal developmental process, which provides a basis for targeted and efficient information processing. For example, functional specialization to print in the left vOT is an important prerequisite for fluent reading. However, it remains unclear, which processes initiate the preferential cortical activations to

Matching reality in the arts: self-referential neural processing of naturalistic compared to surrealistic images.

How are works of art that present scenes that match potential expectations processed in the brain, in contrast to such scenes that can never occur in real life because they would violate physical laws? Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the processing of surrealistic and naturalistic images in visual artworks. Looking at naturalistic paintings leads to a significantly higher activation in the visual cortex and in the precuneus. Humans apparently own a sensitive mechanism even for artistic representations of the visual world to separate the impossible from what potenti

Preserved Haptic Shape Processing after Bilateral LOC Lesions.

UNLABELLED: The visual and haptic perceptual systems are understood to share a common neural representation of object shape. A region thought to be critical for recognizing visual and haptic shape information is the lateral occipital complex (LOC). We investigated whether LOC is essential for haptic shape recognition in humans by studying behavioral responses and brain activation for haptically explored objects in a patient (M.C.) with bilateral lesions of the occipitotemporal cortex, including LOC. Despite severe deficits in recognizing objects using vision, M.C. was able to accurately recogn

Enhanced and bilateralized visual sensory processing in the ventral stream may be a feature of normal aging.

Evidence has emerged for age-related amplification of basic sensory processing indexed by early components of the visual evoked potential (VEP). However, since these age-related effects have been incidental to the main focus of these studies, it is unclear whether they are performance dependent or alternately, represent intrinsic sensory processing changes. High-density VEPs were acquired from 19 healthy elderly and 15 young control participants who viewed alphanumeric stimuli in the absence of any active task. The data show both enhanced and delayed neural responses within structures of the v

Changes in Aperiodic (1/f Slope) Activity During a Picture-Word Interference Task: Effects of Congruency and Sequence Manipulations.

Aperiodic neural activity (1/f EEG) has been proposed to reflect the balance between excitatory and inhibitory (E/I) inputs, with steeper spectral slopes reflecting increased inhibition and flatter slopes indicating excitation. This activity is also thought to reflect the temporal coordination of neural firing, offering insights into fundamental brain dynamics. Recent studies have shown that the 1/f slope is sensitive to stimulus onset, characterized by initial inhibitory shifts followed by excitatory rebounds, which may reflect cognitive control mechanisms involved in suppressing distractions

The lightness/pitch crossmodal correspondence modulates reported dominance in binocular rivalry.

Crossmodal correspondences (CMCs: systematic associations between feature dimensions across sensory modalities) are known to facilitate performance in simple detection and discrimination tasks and can bias reports of ambiguous figures. The present study tested whether a lightness/pitch CMC biases reported dominance in binocular rivalry. Across three experiments, participants viewed dichoptically presented black and white circles accompanied by relatively high- or low-pitched tones. Dominance reports were coded as congruent when they matched the lightness/pitch correspondence (white/high, black

Cognitive mechanisms of creative meaning decoding for non-literal language-An eye-tracking study on Chinese logogriphs.

This eye-tracking study investigates the cognitive mechanisms underlying creative meaning decoding in Chinese logogriphs-character-based riddles whose solutions require a metalinguistic reinterpretation of the riddle surface. Unlike figurative language, where non-literal meanings operate via semantic-pragmatic extension, logogriphs demand that solvers inhibit the salient literal interpretation and instead access low-salience metalinguistic properties (e.g., the interpretation of orthographic decomposition, spatial manipulation of character components). Experiment 1 revealed a three-stage proce

Monocular size and distance scaling is modulated by the presence of a fixation point.

Fixation points are widely used in psychophysical research to stabilise gaze, yet their influence on perceptual outcomes remains underexplored. This study investigated the effects of the presence versus absence of a fixation point on monocular size-distance scaling, examining whether it functions as a fixation stabiliser, a spatial anchor (i.e., as a direct depth or location cue), or a competing visual reference. Using a widely employed fixation marker, we compared size and distance judgments for real objects and afterimages (stimuli that differ in their reliance on depth cues). Fixation point

Neural specialization of print processing in second language learning: A longitudinal ERP study of Chinese children learning English.

The N1 component of event-related potentials (ERP) reflects print tuning and lexicality effects. Previous studies have shown that for a second learned writing system, tuning and lexical effects are associated with age and ability. However, the developmental trajectory of these tuning and lexicality effects, and how language skills influence them, remains unclear. The present study investigated how English reading abilities contribute to longitudinal changes in N1 amplitude and print tuning among Chinese children in Hong Kong. Forty-three children performed a repetition detection task while EEG

Reading acquisition drives linguistic cross-modal convergence in the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex.

Reading acquisition requires linking visual symbols with speech sounds, leading to the development of neural sensitivity to print. While prior studies have shown the importance of cross-modal integration in spoken language areas, the higher-level visual area (lvOT) processing printed words remained more context-dependent. This longitudinal study investigated whether the lvOT undergoes cross-modal reorganization to facilitate print-speech integration during reading development and how these changes relate to reading skills. We followed children over two years, beginning at the onset of formal r

Pharmacological Enhancement of Dopamine Neurotransmission Does Not Affect Illusory Pattern Perception.

Psychotic symptoms and delusional beliefs have been linked to dopamine transmission in both healthy and clinical samples and are assumed to result at least in part from perceiving illusory patterns in noise. However, the existing literature on the role of dopamine in detecting patterns in noise is inconclusive. To address this issue, we assessed the effect of manipulating dopaminergic neurotransmission on illusory pattern perception in healthy individuals (n = 48, n = 19 female) in a double-blind placebo-controlled within-subjects design (see preregistration at https://osf.io/a4k9j/). We predi

Reading disability is characterized by reduced print-speech convergence.

Reading disability (RD) may be characterized by reduced print-speech convergence, which is the extent to which neurocognitive processes for reading and hearing words overlap. We examined how print-speech convergence changes from children (mean age: 11.07+0.48) to adults (mean age: 21.33+1.80) in 86 readers with or without RD. The participants were recruited in elementary schools and associate degree colleges in China (from 2020 to 2021). Three patterns of abnormalities were revealed: (1) persistent reduction of print-speech convergence in the left inferior parietal cortex in both children and

Using child-friendly movie stimuli to study the development of face, place, and object regions from age 3 to 12 years.

Scanning young children while they watch short, engaging, commercially-produced movies has emerged as a promising approach for increasing data retention and quality. Movie stimuli also evoke a richer variety of cognitive processes than traditional experiments, allowing the study of multiple aspects of brain development simultaneously. However, because these stimuli are uncontrolled, it is unclear how effectively distinct profiles of brain activity can be distinguished from the resulting data. Here we develop an approach for identifying multiple distinct subject-specific Regions of Interest (ss

Representation of visual numerosity information during working memory in humans: An fMRI decoding study.

Both animal and human studies on numerosity have shown the importance of the parietal cortex for numerosity processing. However, most studies have focused on the perceptual processing of numerosity. Still, it is unclear how and where numerosity information is coded when this information is retained during a working memory delay phase. Such temporal storage could be realized by the same structures as perceptual processes, or be transformed to a more abstract representation, potentially involving prefrontal regions. FMRI decoding studies allow the identification of brain areas that exhibit multi

The contributions of the left hippocampus and bilateral inferior parietal lobule to form-meaning associative learning.

Existing studies have identified crucial roles for the hippocampus and a distributed set of cortical regions (e.g., the inferior parietal cortex) in learning novel words. Nevertheless, researchers have not clearly determined how the hippocampus and cortical regions dynamically interact during novel word learning, especially during form-meaning associative learning. As a method to address this question, we used an online learning paradigm and representational similarity analysis to explore the contributions of the hippocampus and neocortex to form-meaning associative learning. The Relationships Between Cortical Activity while Observing Images Featuring Different Degrees of Ambiguity and Ambiguity Tolerance.

We performed a fMRI study during which 18 healthy subjects passively viewed abstract images and tried to name them. The images were geometric primitives, impossible images (Penrose images), and ambiguous images (Rorschach inkblots). Activation and deactivation areas were revealed for each task. The results of psychological assessment of ambiguity tolerance according to MSTAT-I inventory were used as regressors. Deactivation of the precuneus (Brodmann area 7) and neighboring structures (especially when observing geometric primitives and inventing names for them) and in the fronto-temporal areas
