Perception of measures for dealing with Ebola disease in primary care.

BACKGROUND: An epidemic of Ebola virus disease (EVD) occurred in West Africa in 2014. In Catalonia, primary care is the first level of healthcare so it has a key role in the detection and initial management of possible cases of EVD and in identifying contacts. AIM: This study aimed to find out how the staff of primary care centers perceived the measures for dealing with EVD. METHOD: An online questionnaire was distributed to all primary care workers in Catalonia during the period February-March 2015. FINDINGS: The estimated response rate was 10.1%. They reported having received training/inf

Negligible fronto-parietal BOLD activity accompanying unreportable switches in bistable perception.

The human brain's executive systems have a vital role in deciding and selecting among actions. Selection among alternatives also occurs in the perceptual domain; for instance, when perception switches between interpretations during perceptual bistability. Whether executive systems also underlie this functionality remains debated, with known fronto-parietal concomitants of perceptual switches being variously interpreted as reflecting the switches' cause or as reflecting their consequences. We developed a procedure in which the two eyes receive different inputs and perception demonstrably switch…

A causal role for inferior parietal lobule in emotion body perception.

Recent investigations of emotion body perception have established that perceiving fearful body expressions critically triggers activity in dorsal stream structures related to action preparation. However, the causal contributions of these areas remain unclear. In the current experiment, we addressed this issue using online transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) in the dorsal stream and visual areas (extrastriate body area - EBA in the ventral stream and early visual cortex - EVC). Participants performed a delayed-match-to-sample task requiring detection of…

Impact of facial defect reconstruction on attractiveness and negative facial perception.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Measure the impact of facial defect reconstruction on observer-graded attractiveness and negative facial perception. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, controlled experiment. METHODS: One hundred twenty casual observers viewed images of faces with defects of varying sizes and locations before and after reconstruction as well as normal comparison faces. Observers rated attractiveness, defect severity, and how disfiguring, bothersome, and important to repair they considered each face. RESULTS: Facial defects decreased attractiveness -2.26 (95% confidence interval [C…

Enhancing Anger Perception With Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation Induced Gamma Oscillations.

BACKGROUND: In recent years a variety of neuroimaging studies have highlighted a role of neural oscillations in perception and cognition. However, surprisingly little is known about oscillatory activity underlying facial emotion perception. The limited number of studies that have addressed this question indicate that gamma oscillations are one mechanism underlying this process. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to further elucidate the role of neural oscillations within the gamma range in facial emotion perception in healthy adults by using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS)…

The effect of occlusion therapy on motion perception deficits in amblyopia.

There is growing evidence for deficits in motion perception in amblyopia, but these are rarely assessed clinically. In this prospective study we examined the effect of occlusion therapy on motion-defined form perception and multiple-object tracking. Participants included children (3-10years old) with unilateral anisometropic and/or strabismic amblyopia who were currently undergoing occlusion therapy and age-matched control children with normal vision. At the start of the study, deficits in motion-defined form perception were present in at least one eye in 69% of the children with amblyopia. Th…

Improving car drivers' perception of motorcycle motion through innovative headlight configurations.

The most frequent cause of motorcycle accidents occurs when another vehicle violates the motorcycle's right-of-way at an intersection. In addition to detection errors, misperception of the approaching motorcycle's speed and time-to-arrival is another driver error that accounts for these accidents, although this error has been studied less often. Such misperceptions have been shown to be related to the small size of motorcycles and to their small angular velocity when approaching. In two experiments we tested the impact of different motorcycle headlight configurations in various ambient lightin…

Illusory Tactile Motion Perception: An Analog of the Visual Filehne Illusion.

We continually move our body and our eyes when exploring the world, causing our sensory surfaces, the skin and the retina, to move relative to external objects. In order to estimate object motion consistently, an ideal observer would transform estimates of motion acquired from the sensory surface into fixed, world-centered estimates, by taking the motion of the sensor into account. This ability is referred to as spatial constancy. Human vision does not follow this rule strictly and is therefore subject to perceptual illusions during eye movements, where immobile objects can appear to move. Her

Facial expression perception correlates with verbal working memory function in schizophrenia.

AIMS: Facial emotion perception is considered to provide a measure of social cognition. Numerous studies have examined the perception of emotion in patients with schizophrenia, and the majority has reported impaired ability to recognize facial emotion perception. We aimed to investigate the correlation between facial expression recognition and other domains of social cognition and neurocognition in Japanese patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: Participants were 52 patients with schizophrenia and 53 normal controls with no history of psychiatric diseases. All participants completed the Hintin…

The Occipital Face Area Is Causally Involved in Facial Viewpoint Perception.

UNLABELLED: Humans reliably recognize faces across a range of viewpoints, but the neural substrates supporting this ability remain unclear. Recent work suggests that neural selectivity to mirror-symmetric viewpoints of faces, found across a large network of visual areas, may constitute a key computational step in achieving full viewpoint invariance. In this study, we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to test the hypothesis that the occipital face area (OFA), putatively a key node in the face network, plays a causal role in face viewpoint symmetry perception. Each partici…

Gender Influences Radicular Pain Perception in Patients with Lumbar Disc Herniation.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated gender differences in pain perception in quantitative sensory testing. Thus, we hypothesized that there are differences in men and women with lumbar disc herniation awaiting lumbar sequestrectomy. To elucidate the differences in pain perception between men and women, we carried out a prospective clinical monocentric trial using quantitative sensory testing. METHODS: With institutional ethical approval, patients with radiculopathy awaiting lumbar sequestrectomy were examined the day before surgery. Preoperative pain was assessed using quantitative…

3D Shape Perception in Posterior Cortical Atrophy: A Visual Neuroscience Perspective.

UNLABELLED: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a rare focal neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by progressive visuoperceptual and visuospatial deficits, most often due to atypical Alzheimer's disease (AD). We applied insights from basic visual neuroscience to analyze 3D shape perception in humans affected by PCA. Thirteen PCA patients and 30 matched healthy controls participated, together with two patient control groups with diffuse Lewy body dementia (DLBD) and an amnestic-dominant phenotype of AD, respectively. The hierarchical study design consisted of 3D shape processing for 4 cues …

Aristotle's illusion in Parkinson's disease: evidence for normal interdigit tactile perception.

Sensory alterations, a common feature of such movement disorders as Parkinson's disease (PD) and dystonia, could emerge as epiphenomena of basal ganglia dysfunction. Recently, we found a selective reduction of tactile perception (Aristotle's illusion, the illusory doubling sensation of one object when touched with crossed fingers) in the affected hand of patients with focal hand dystonia. This suggests that reduced tactile illusion might be a specific feature of this type of dystonia and could be due to abnormal somatosensory cortical activation. The aim of the current study was to investigate…

Perception of pain among pediatric patients with sickle cell pain crisis.

Pain related to vasoocclusion is the most common reason for emergency department visits and hospital stays among pediatric patients with sickle cell disease. Using a prospective descriptive design, patients hospitalized with sickle cell pain were asked to complete the Adolescent Pediatric Pain Tool on each day of their hospital stay, providing data on the location, intensity, and quality of their pain. Data for 82 hospital stays were collected from 40 African American study participants. Mean age was 14.8 years, and mean length of stay (LOS) was 5.1 days. Mean LOS for 8 to 12 year olds (3.23 d

Training transfers the limits on perception from parietal to ventral cortex.

Visually guided behavior depends on (1) extracting and (2) discriminating signals from complex retinal inputs, and these perceptual skills i … by PPC stimulation but instead by LO stimulation. This indicates that training shifts the limits on perception from parietal to ventral brain regions and identifies a critical neural circuit for visual learning. We suggest that generalization is implemented by supplanting dynamic processing conducted in the PPC with specific feature templates stored in the v …

Visual and auditory perception in preschool children at risk for dyslexia.

Recently, there has been renewed interest in perceptive problems of dyslexics. A polemic research issue in this area has been the nature of the perception deficit. Another issue is the causal role of this deficit in dyslexia. Most studies have been carried out in adult and child literates; consequently, the observed deficits may be the result rather than the cause of dyslexia. This study addresses these issues by examining visual and auditory perception in children at risk for dyslexia. We compared children from preschool with and without risk for dyslexia in auditory and visual temporal order…

The development of auditory perception in children after auditory brainstem implantation.

Auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) can provide useful auditory perception and language development in deaf children who are not able to use a cochlear implant (CI). We prospectively followed up a consecutive group of 64 deaf children up to 12 years following ABI surgery. The etiology of deafness in these children was: cochlear nerve aplasia in 49, auditory neuropathy in 1, cochlear malformations in 8, bilateral cochlear postmeningitic ossification in 3, neurofibromatosis type 2 in 2, and bilateral cochlear fractures due to a head injury in 1. Thirty-five children had other congenital nonaudito…
