The clinical spectrum of pigmented lesions.

This article presents the clinical features of a spectrum of pigmented lesions. It begins with benign lesions that may be confused with melanocytic nevi, such as lentigines, seborrheic keratoses, and dermatofibromas. The next section focuses on the various types of melanocytic nevi, including congenital, blue, and Spitz nevi. A description of atypical nevi is provided, followed by an outline of the clinical characteristics of each subtype of cutaneous melanoma. The clinical characteristics of various pigmented lesions are illustrated.

[Ethnic variation in congenital pigmentation anomalies].

Clear ethnic differences are observed in the major form of tyrosinase-negative oculocutaneous albinism as well as in other forms of oculocutaneous albinism, cutaneous albinism and the very rare ocular albinism. Most interesting is the borderline between normal variation and abnormal forms, especially illuminated in rutilism or red headedness in Negroids and high frequencies of pigmentation anomalies without appreciable disadvantages for the carrier, e.g., the reddish skin of geographically isolated Papuans. The very differential frequencies of the occurrence of pigmentation anomalies in some p

Fundus changes in incontinentia pigmenti (Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome): a case report.

A case of incontinentia pigmenti is reported with fundus changes in 1 eye. She had microaneurysms temporal to the macula, with an abnormal branch of inferior temporal vein. There was extensive retinitis proliferans in the upper temporal equatorial region, which showed leakage on fluorescein angiography.

Frequency and clinical characteristics of hydroxychloroquine-induced pigmentation in Japanese paediatric patients: a retrospective cohort study.

To investigate the frequency and characteristics of HCQ-induced pigmentation in Japanese paediatric patients. This retrospective cohort study enrolled Japanese children who received HCQ for ≥ 3 months. Data were collected from medical records, caregiver or patient questionnaires on awareness of pigmentation, and physical examination findings. The primary outcome was the frequency of HCQ-induced pigmentation. Twenty-six patients were included. Of these, 25 (96.2%) were female (median age: 15 years; first to third quartiles [Q1-Q3]: 12.0-16.8). Eleven patients had pigmentation (42.3%). Kaplan-Me

Prediction and association analyses of skin phenotypes in Japanese females using genetic, environmental, and physical features.

BACKGROUND: Skin characteristics show great variation from person to person and are affected by multiple factors, including genetic, environmental, and physical factors, but details of the involvement and contributions of these factors remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to characterize genetic, environmental, and physical factors affecting 16 skin features by developing models to predict personal skin characteristics. METHODS: We analyzed the associations of skin phenotypes with genetic, environmental, and physical features in 1472 Japanese females aged 20-80 years. We focused on 16 skin c

The Larson Blue coat color phenotype in Holsteins: Characteristics and effects on body temperature regulation and production in lactating cows in a hot climate.

Here we report a previously undescribed coat color phenotype in Holstein cattle. Larson Blue Holsteins, located on a dairy in south Florida, exhibit a coloration pattern that is similar to that of black and white or red and white Holsteins except that, instead of being black or red, darker regions of the body vary in color from gray to taupe. The Larson Blue phenotype was readily apparent in young calves. The phenotype is not due to inheritance of known mutations causing coat color variation in cattle, including dominant red, Telstar, silver color dilutor, or Dun color. Three variants with mod

Treatment of 153 Japanese patients with Q-switched alexandrite laser.

We have recently used Q-switched alexandrite laser for the treatment of various kinds of pigmented skin lesions. We retrospectively compared therapeutic outcomes of 153 Japanese patients who consulted our department. This approach was not very efficient for nevus spilus/café-au-lait spots, which seemed laser-resistant, especially when the pigmentation had appeared after 1 year of age, was treated after 5 years of age, was located on the face, was oval with a smooth border, and the patient was male. This approach was equally effective for senile lentigo, nevus of Ota, and Mongolian spots, but l

Uveal malignant melanoma associated with ocular and oculodermal melanocytosis.

Seventeen patients with ocular or oculodermal melanocytosis were identified among 1,250 Caucasian patients with uveal malignant melanoma. The uveal melanomas in these seventeen patients were similar in size, cell type, and tendency to metastasize to those occurring in reported populations without ocular or oculodermal melanocytosis. Clinical and histopathologic study of these 17 cases indicated that all of the affected eyes had episcleral and choroidal melanocytosis and that other ocular and periocular tissues (sclera, iris, conjunctiva, angle structures, and optic disc) were involved less com

Cutaneous reactions to topical application of hydroquinone. Results of a 6-year investigation.

The investigation was designed to assess the safety of hydroquinone in cosmetic skin-lightening products, and to determine the optimal concentration for the purpose. The 840 volunteers who took part in the 6-year trial were drawn from various race groups with skins varying from very fair to very dark. They were subjected to open tests, "normal usage" tests, and standard 48-hour closed-patch tests. In all, over 7,000 test areas were examined. The results show that concentrations of hydroquinone of 3% and less produced negligible adverse effects, irrespective of the base or the colour of the use

Xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is defined by extreme sensitivity to sunlight, resulting in sunburn, pigment changes in the skin and a greatly elevated incidence of skin cancers. It is a rare autosomal recessive disorder and has been found in all continents and racial groups. Estimated incidences vary from 1 in 20, 000 in Japan to 1 in 250, 000 in the USA, and approximately 2.3 per million live births in Western Europe. The first features are either extreme sensitivity to sunlight, triggering severe sunburn, or, in patients who do not show this sun-sensitivity, abnormal lentiginosis (freckle-like pi

Pigmented skin lesions displaying regression features: Dermoscopy and reflectance confocal microscopy criteria for diagnosis.

Melanomas and nevi displaying regression features can be difficult to differentiate. To describe reflectance confocal microscopy features in benign and malignant pigmented skin lesions characterized by regression features in dermoscopy. Observational retrospective study. Inclusion criteria were presence of dermoscopic features of regression; availability of clinical, dermoscopic and RCM imaging; definite histopathologic diagnosis. The study sample comprised 217 lesions; 108 (49.8%) melanomas and 109 were benign lesions, of which 102 (47.0%) nevi and 7 (3.2%) lichen planus-like keratosis (lplk)

[Diffuse hyperpigmentation in systemic sclerosis].

Pigment disorders are commonly observed in patients with systemic sclerosis. They can occur in up to 50% of those affected and include both hypo- and diffuse hyperpigmentation. The latter can be an indicator of vascular involvement and suggest a severe course of the disease. We report on the case of a patient with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis who, in addition to severe vascular complications including digital ulcerations, necrosis, and autoamputations, developed diffuse hyperpigmentation.
