Progressing towards the 2030 health-related SDGs in ASEAN: A systematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) articulate an ambitious global agenda and set of targets to achieve by 2030. Among the health-related SDGs, many formidable challenges remain in settings like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) which face wide-ranging social, economic and health inequalities. In advance of the 2030 horizon, charting the trajectory of the health SDGs is critical for informing policy and programmatic course corrections to advance health and well-being among ASEAN's 10 member countries with its 667 million people. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We used

Tradescantia response to air and soil pollution, stamen hair cells dataset and ANN color classification.

Tradescantia plant is a complex system that is sensible to environmental factors such as water supply, pH, temperature, light, radiation, impurities, and nutrient availability. It can be used as a biomonitor for environmental changes; however, the bioassays are time-consuming and have a strong human interference factor that might change the result depending on who is performing the analysis. We have developed computer vision models to study color variations from Tradescantia clone 4430 plant stamen hair cells, which can be stressed due to air pollution and soil contamination. The study introdu

Crumbotti and rose petals in a ghost mountain valley: foraging, landscape, and their transformations in the upper Borbera Valley, NW Italy.

BACKGROUND: The abandonment of mountain areas in Europe is a process that started during industrialisation and whose traces are still present nowadays. Initiatives aimed at stopping this decline and preserving the local biological and cultural diversities reflect the crucial issue of fostering sustainable rural development. This article contributes to the ongoing debate in assessing and preserving local ecological knowledge (LEK) in a highly marginalised mountain community in the Piedmontese Apennines to support local development. In so doing, it continues a larger project assessing how local

Spatial patterns and climate drivers of malaria in three border areas of Brazil, Venezuela and Guyana, 2016-2018.

In 2020, 77% of malaria cases in the Americas were concentrated in Venezuela, Brazil, and Colombia. These countries are characterized by a heterogeneous malaria landscape and malaria hotspots. Furthermore, the political unrest in Venezuela has led to significant cross-border population movement. Hence, the aim of this study was to describe spatial patterns and identify significant climatic drivers of malaria transmission along the Venezuela-Brazil-Guyana border, focusing on Bolivar state, Venezuela and Roraima state, Brazil. Malaria case data, stratified by species from 2016 to 2018, were obta

Social support profiles and their association with sociodemographic and mental health characteristics among treatment-seeking adults in Arabic-speaking countries.

High prevalences of mental disorders have been found among people from Arabic-speaking countries. Perceived social support has often been identified as a significant factor in the development of mental disorders, and the social environment is especially important with respect to treatment-seeking. However, the extent to which different sources of perceived social support are associated with mental health remains unclear. This cross-sectional study examined latent profiles based on perceived social support from different sources, and examined their relationship with sociodemographic characteris

Cancer burden and status of cancer control measures in fragile states: a comparative analysis of 31 countries.

BACKGROUND: Information on cancer statistics and cancer control policies is limited in fragile states. This paper describes the cancer burden and status of cancer control measures in these countries. METHODS: In this comparative analysis, fragile states presenting with a Fragile States Index (FSI) score of 90·0 or more (alert for fragility) for at least 10 years during the 2006-20 period were selected. States with fewer than 10 years of data were selected if they were in alert for fragility during all years. Information on cancer burden, prevalence of cancer risk factors, population-attributa

The integration of the global HIV/AIDS response into universal health coverage: desirable, perhaps possible, but far from easy.

BACKGROUND: The international community's health focus is shifting from achieving disease-specific targets towards aiming for universal health coverage. Integrating the global HIV/AIDS response into universal health coverage may be inevitable to secure its achievements in the long run, and for expanding these achievements beyond addressing a single disease. However, this integration comes at a time when international financial support for the global HIV/AIDS response is declining, while political support for universal health coverage is not translated into financial support. To assess the risk

Two heads are better than one: Australian tobacco control experts' and mental health change champions' consensus on addressing the problem of high smoking rates among people with mental illness.

Objective The aims of the present study were to explore the beliefs of Australian experts in tobacco control and change champions working in mental health and tobacco cessation, and to identify measures for addressing the problem of high smoking rates for people with mental illness. Methods Qualitative interviews were undertaken to explore participants' views, and the Delphi technique was used to achieve consensus on ways in which the problem would be best addressed. Results This consensus centred on the need for leadership within the mental health system. The problem was reconceptualised from

The 2026 Bundibugyo Ebola Outbreak: A Warning for Global Preparedness for Future Epidemics.

Dear Editor, The 2026 Bundibugyo Ebolavirus (BDBV) outbreak has once again demonstrated that the threat of emerging diseases remains a major global health challenge. The outbreak, first detected in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and spread to Uganda, is not only a regional crisis but also a test of the world's preparedness for pathogens with epidemic potential. Unlike Zaire Ebolavirus (EBOV), which has benefited from effective vaccines and treatments in recent years, BDBV still lacks a licensed vaccine or specific treatment[1]. As of June 6, a total of 515 laboratory-confirmed cases an

From Genes to Neural Circuits: Genetic and Systems Mechanisms of Ethanol Sensitivity and Tolerance in Drosophila melanogaster.

INTRODUCTION: Questioning is a key method in general information-seeking behaviour and teaching used by the dominant culture in Australia. Within an Australian health context the fundamental diagnostic tool used by medical staff is the biomedical interview or history taking, which is based on a battery of direct questions. Similarly, many health professionals rely on patient questions to prompt the sharing of information, or to make them aware of gaps in communication. This is problematic for many First Nations peoples, including Yolηu (First Nations people of North-East Arnhem Land), who

Governance and planning in a 'perfect storm': Securitising climate change, migration and Covid-19 in Sweden.

The article describes and reflects upon how multi-level governance and planning in Sweden have been affected by and reacted upon three pending major challenges confronting humanity, namely climate change, migration and the Covid-19 pandemic. These 'crises' are broadly considered 'existential threats' in need of 'securitisation'. Causes and adequate reactions are contested, and there are no given solutions how to securitise the perceived threats, neither one by one, no less together. Government securitisation strategies are challenged by counter-securitisation demands, and plaguing vulnerable g

Six Sigma: not for the faint of heart.

Six Sigma is an excellent quality and performance improvement tool. Like any tool, the results of using it are highly dependent on whether you use it with competence and on the right problem. This article will help you decide if your problem is well-suited for a Six Sigma approach and will suggest the optimum approach for planning and implementing Six Sigma methodology. Performance improvement methods can be grouped into two broad categories, based on the problem to be addressed. When the problem is relatively minor and localized, "evolutionary" methods may be suitable (e.g., quality circles,

Ryan White CARE Act Title IV programs: a preliminary characterization of benefits and costs.

Congress enacted the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act in 1990 to address the unmet health needs of persons living with HIV (PLWH) by funding primary healthcare and support services to enhance access to and retention in care. The CARE Act was amended and reauthorized in 1996 and in 2000, and again in December 2006. As originally enacted, the CARE Act was a compromise across a wide political divide. A structure was established that distributed Ryan White CARE Act (RWCA) funds through five federal titles, with different parameters set for each title. Some funds were pl

Inequities in the continuum of maternal care in Mexico: trends before and after COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Despite progress in maternal health coverage in Mexico, inequities persist, particularly in postnatal care. The COVID-19 pandemic further widened these gaps, disproportionately affecting women with similar health needs but different socioeconomic conditions. This study assesses trends in maternal healthcare coverage and inequity across nine stages of antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care, comparing pre- and post-pandemic periods. By examining horizontal inequity, we identify critical gaps and policy implications to enhance equitable maternal healthcare access. METHODS: We conduc

[Health policy of the Republic of Turkey in accordance with the minutes of the Turkish Parliament (Part II)].

Because of the invasion of the Ottoman territory after the World War I, the Turkish War of Liberty was initiated by Mustafa Kemal Pasha and his friends. While they aimed at a successful outcome of the battle, they at the same time tried to achieve a nation-wide organization. In order to look after the nation's medical and social service, on May 2nd 1920, a new ministry called the Ministry for Medical and Social Service was founded. The new ministry's task was not only to concern itself with the medical and social service, but also with immigration and of the immigrants. At the beginning the hi

Diverse patients' attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence (AI) in diagnosis.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy. Yet people are often reluctant to trust automated systems, and some patient populations may be particularly distrusting. We sought to determine how diverse patient populations feel about the use of AI diagnostic tools, and whether framing and informing the choice affects uptake. To construct and pretest our materials, we conducted structured interviews with a diverse set of actual patients. We then conducted a pre-registered (osf.io/9y26x), randomized, blinded survey experiment in factorial design. A survey firm pro
